A good bet is to hug the shoreline, you could run M-59 East, maybe have a breakfast meet up at "Momma Vickies" which is between Gratiot and I-94. Continue east past Selfridge then pick-up Jefferson, North to New Baltimore. You can then take M-29 around Anchor Bay through Algonac, Marine City, St. Clair and Marysville. "Powers Diner" in Port Huron, a chrome and neon classic, is a worthy stop, and North of town your road becomes M-25 which carries you all the way around the Thumb to Bay City. You can then jump onto I-75 for a quick return to Pontiac. Allow a few minutes to make a beach run in Caseville. This would be approximately a 6 hour run for you, longer if you chose to make additional stops.

Oh, don't forget to swing into the "General Store" at Grindstone City, best ice cream cones in Michigan! Be prepared for big, no, make that huge.
