    I would say 04 or newer. The carbed 04-06 aren't bad bikes, but they are jetted really lean stock. I would stay away from 03 and older. The frame change in 04 gives you the rubber mounted engine.

    If you could stretch your budget a little I would seriously recommend you test drive a used super glide before you pick up a sportster. For not much more money you get a lot more bike.

    2003 and earlier sporties have a solid mounted engine and "buzz" a bit more, but are almost 100 pounds lighter. If you want the rubbermount, I would go 2006 or later. They upgraded a lot from 2004.
    Sportster is a small bike. Not great for 2 up unless you are both on the lighter side.

    The engine work is easy, I had the pistons installed in the cylinders so only needed hand tools and torque wrenches. Aside from brakes, fasteners are SAE, so you may need new tools, lol.

    Also, the stock suspension sucks, so look for a bike that someone has made upgrades.....
