    THIS IS AN OPINION TOPIC- POST YOUR OPINION, YOU CAN DISAGREE, BUT NO INSULTS OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT.

    POST ALSO ON EXPERIENCE. IF YOU ARE BASING YOUR COMMENTS ON WHAT YOUR BUDDY WHO RACES AS A PRIVATEER SAID OR WHO HAS A COUSIN THAT WORKS FOR HONDA/YAMAHA/SUZUKI/KAWASAKI/OTHER BRAND OR WHAT NOT, YOU CAN GIVE YOUR LIMITED HEARSAY KNOWLEDGE, BUT DON'T FLAME.

    I HAVE BROKEN IN 7 ENGINES, 4 BIKES AND 3 CARS, WHILE A SMALL SAMPLE, I HAVE TRIED DIFFERENT METHODS AND THEY ALL HAVE WORKED WELL.

    This is a very hot topic... I decided to try this on my SM... let's see how it differs... my old SM was broken in by the book and figured WTH... Let the arguing begin...

    I ALWAYS change my oil within the first 25-30 miles, then at 200... 600 then every 1.5-3000 depending on how bad the oil looks and the bike (SM only holds 1.9 qts... the X holds 4 qts)

    I also ran it a little hard for a few miles (not like I stole it, just "spirited), up shifting and down shifting while using engine brake to slow down, no wheelies to keep the engine lubricated)... I don't think synthetic is a good thing for the first 5000 miles, IMO... My F4i ran Mobil 1 red cap Synth after 5k miles and it ran like a champ. My SM never got synthetic, but at 1.9 qts of oil, changes are cheap and I did them often... every 1500 miles or so. New filter every 3k miles.

    Wow, thanks for that link, that's really interesting! I'm always careful during the first few hundred miles, never approaching redline for more than a fration of a second, if at all. I do keep the RPMs down most of that time as well, and just as you say, I'm constantly rolling on and off the throttle, and in every gear. I usually change my oil and filter after the 1st 250 miles, then at a thousand, and then at 3 thousand, followed by the regular 3 to 5 thousand mile intervals, depending on the type of oil, bike, and how hard the bike is ridden. In all honesty, with the exception of a couple of friends' HDs and my ZZR1200 that had a pitted cam, (manufacturing defect) I've never seen or heard of any excess wear and tear on anyone's motorcycles engines or transmissions, no matter HOW they broke em in, or even if they maintained em much! I had my old V max apart quite a few times doing various major internal mods, and there was never any serious signs of wear whatsoever in anything, and I beat the bajesus out of that thing. Next time I get a bike, I'm breaking it in on a dyno.

    I always break them in by downshifting and using engine brake power... my big thing has always been that first oil change within the first 30 miles at most. I did this method with my current car, and it pulls pretty strong with 36k miles in 15 months.

    To me it comes to keeping clean oil in the machine. It has always been pretty cheap for me to do that, so it's cheap peace of mind and fresh oil always make smoother shifting, smoother running engine.

    I just wanted to post this, since it's such a heated topic and we can all talk about what we have experienced.

    Interesting stuff for sure..

    Maybe it says somewhere on there but I read that with newer engines the tolerances are so much tighter due to better manufacturing equipment (better technology to produce the parts) that you don't need to break in an engine.. its good to go out of the crate..
