    Default Steering Head adjustment

It seems my steering head needs a little tweeking every 10 to 12,000 mi, wondering what you guys are using on that 1 1/2" nut, does a short enough socket in this size exist, or do I need a crows foot?

What bike? What constraints do you have? Depth and/or width?

I have a full range of 12 pt closed end wrenches for such big nuts.

09 Low Rider, 5 point nut, 4 1/2" from base of nut to underside of handlebar. A socket or a crows foot would allow me to get a torque wrench on it.
Think what I'll end up doing is pick up a deep well socket, then cut it down enough so it fits.

Do you have a service manual?

Normally you don't torque these you tighten and adjust to a certain fall away. Usually measured in inches.

Yeah I have a service manual, and you're right about the fall away, but once that is adjusted the stem nut needs to be torqued to 75-80 ft-lbs.

But the stem nut being torqued lighter or tighter will have a direct effect on the fall away. That's why I'm confused.

The washer between the Star nut and the stem nut would and should prevent the star nut from turning any tighter.

No on the pictures, not sure how that work's. But if you have a service manual check out Steering Head Bearings,(adjustment, bearing adjustment,(fall away). If worst comes to worst I'll take the bars off, I'll figure it out when the time comes. Thanks GasMan.
