My wife wanted to stop out to Biker Bob's yesterday and look around at stuff. To my mind, 'stuff' is clothes, gifts, you know...'stuff'.

Evidently we have different definitions. 'Stuff' to her means a Nightster. We were there an hour and she spent half of it going back and forth between the Nightster and Iron. She also checked out the new Fat Boy Lo. She found some 'stuff' (my definition) she liked too.

I told her the Iron looked better on her, it had the black denim finish. She said: "I like that, but the Nightster is a 1200."

Damn. Who in the hell told her there was even a difference?

All that aside, Harley really hit the old-school nail on the head with the new Bones, all except the stupid skull and crossbones on the oil tank. The spring seat, mid-rise ape hangers and blacked out springer are very cool. The whole bike looks like an old stripped down Pan. The one they have on the floor is a silver denim, looked nice but the black would look better.

So if she's getting the Nightster....

I really like the Nightster. I think it's one of their nicest looking bikes. BUT, if you got an 883 it's cheaper to get the 1200 or even 1250 kit for it and make it a larger motor. Then your insurance thinks you have a 883 and the insurance will even be cheaper as well.

I hear that all the time. Let's look at it realistically:

It'd cost me between $700-1,000 to change it out. The difference in Insurance is about $100 a year. It'd take roughly 7-10 years to realize any savings. Not worth it. If it comes down to 1200 or 883 it'd be a 1200 to start with, or if I had a fried top-end on an 883 that was getting rebuilt anyway.

Kind of like spending $3,000 on new windows to save $150 a year.

Trust me on this. Just get the nightster. The bike is sweet. I love the wife's bike. Its badass! I wouldn't take it on any road trips but anything within an hour and its kick ass.

What sales person did you talk to? Did you tell them I sent ya? It gets you $500 store credit and me too!

How much more is the Nightster over a stock 883?

The Nightster is a look. Blacked out engine, etc. The kit isn't going to provide that. And there's more cost yet, Rejet the carb, dyno tuning, etc. etc. $535 is only a good start.

Plus, I ain't doing it anyway.

True but the Iron is even more blacked out than the nightster. Further, if you did a bore kit on the 883. Get all Screamin Eagle parts, have it all done at the dealer, and it won't void the warrenty. Let her go one year on the 883 then do the upgrade.

Personally I think the drivetrain colors are reversed. The Iron is all black and the Nightster is black & gray. It should be the other way around.
