I just picked up the Hayden primary tensioner to replace the stock HD one in my 09. Anybody else running one of these, or have an opinion on them? I was going to throw this in when i changed the fluids next week, hoping to be ready to ride by april 1st.

No. You don't want automatic. That's the problem with the stock unit.

As much as I've had problems with baker as of late.

You want the baker unit.

The hayden tensioner is spring loaded, vs a ratchet style from Harley. A lot of complaints about earlier versions of it, I believe they've fixed those problems but based on my observations of the chatter on hdforums, I'd say the feedback on it is still not universally great.

My strategy is to have Baker install their static tensioner when I'm in Sturgis this year (they do free installs). After 30 thousand miles or so, I figure my chain is pretty much stretched as its going to get, I can check the tension every year, no big deal.

If you don't beat on your bike the Hayden is just fine.
I could hear the chain slapping in mine when I ran the Hayden. I wouldn't run it in anything that made more than a 100hp.
I've ran them all the Baker, the Hayden, and the SE manuals.
I broke the bolts that hold the shoe on the baker 3 times. The SE I don't like the way it tightens the chain, it don't have enough ramp profile and to tighten the chain and it ends up very close to the Compensator and wore the pad very quickly. Ya, can't just buy a new pad, ya have to buy the whole unit.
I am now going back to the Harley Auto tensioner and going to try and figure out a way to make it a manual tensioner, but until then I will keep a eye on it.

I installed the Hayden last week, so far I like it. Shifts smoother, finding neutral is easier. No noises or anything out of the ordinary that i could tell. Ill pull the primary cover again next year just to give it a check and make sure its wearing ok.
