Well I was going to do the Gas Man proposed 2016 motor build (http://www.twowheelmichigan.com/showthread.php?6757-Gas-Man-proposed-2016-motor-build) however, after I spent all that money on the 1996 Searay Bow Rider 260 (http://www.twowheelmichigan.com/showthread.php?6805-1996-Searay-Bow-Rider-260), I was still going to but decided that wasn't financially responsible. So i'm shifting gears... I will order my motor parts just after summer and do the build in Nov/Dec. We don't ride much in those months but it's way nicer outside than now. But of course the real big reason is I will have my money right then...

So into this... things I was going to put off due to the motor build and are far less expensive...

I already ordered and have on hand...

The Baker Compensator sprocket will be installed.
The Skully Customs air ride that I spurred everyone else to install.

On order...

I ordered from Hale's HD; every seal/gasket & bolts for the inner primary and the trans shifter shaft seal. Nate and a few others have had shifter shaft seal leaks and in order to do that I need the other inner primary stuff. I'm considering this PM.
From Hale's also; I have also ordered a nice front engine stabilizer link.
I'm sending my HK head unit out for low level pre-outs installed.
Ordered some BIG sound upgrades. The ARC audio 600.4 amp for sure. Then my audio guy and I are going back n forth between a set of Focal and Hybrids.
Due to the air ride switch, I ordered a few new RAM mounting pieces to move around my GPS and cell phone mounts.

So not a huge year on the bike but another $2500 mod season, which is my norm.

Yesterday I got started.

Uninstalled my Hogtunes amp, Infinity Kappa speakers, and the HK radio.

Then I got to work on the rear suspension. The "old" Progressive's about to be removed.

The new Skully Custom's on deck for installation.

Nice write up and vide G..... looks good. I see your 4way and dump valve went under your side cover.
So as far as your speakers go, are you talking about the Focal vs. the Hybrid LAGATIA ? From what I understand the Lagatia is the cats ass of speakers. Post up what you decide.

I like that Skully set up, the switch is clean and easy to use by the looks of it. Pump mount looks good and kleen too.

I need to mount a pump in my 08 I'm planning on removing my ABS unit and putting it there. I dont like my ABS breaking system.
Not for air ride although air shifter with a tank reservoir.
Have you seen what his mount looks like for the 08 and later frames? Same thing?

Yeah I did... where did you put your 4-way?

The Lagatia is a combo set... Lagatia woofer but the Clarus tweeter. Reason being the Lagatia tweeter is a soft dome which sound great in a car but don't transfer sound as well as the metal dome of the Clarus tweeter on a motorcycle. Or the Focals.... I'm letting my audio guy do some research. I have time as I'm just getting around to sending out my HK radio for mod.

It is a clean setup.

Don't like your ABS? That's crazy man, that's one of my favorite attributes on my bike!!

I'm not sure about your 08.... I suggest you message Rodney at Skully on FB or contact him on his phone. He'll get right back to you.

So I moved my mounts around due to the air ride switch. That got me thinking... I use the phone on my bike EVERY time I ride. I sometimes use my GPS... so I flipped them from side to side. I ordered a bunch of parts from RAM mounts (using Amazon and my Prime account, better price point and free two day which delivered them on Sunday).

There are two types of mounts, I ordered both.

The mount that can also go to your same hand controls 2 bolt or on the bar... this mount's ball is on top.
The other mount is just for the bars and this mount's ball is out the side.

So I went with the side bar mount.

As far as the speakers go, your in good hands with your guy, he knows what up. Regarding the 4 way and the dump valve...I ran mine under the seat. You can put them anywhere really but after speaking to Rodney his suggestion was to place them under the seat per his install video. I had the room so I did but again , anywhere right, what's the difference.

Gasman what are you doing to your radio? I would like to have Bluetooth output and then have wireless headset.

I'm having them go thru it to ensure nothing wrong with it and it still looks good. Then they are adding low/level RCA outputs for front & rear, to run audio signal into a new amp.

Well I did a small ride around the block. I was concerned about the rear tire rolling with the air shocks empty aka the rear all the way down. Why I'm concerned is because I have larger wheels on my bike.

It rolls but it seem to have something rubbing the salt dirt off the rear tire in the center. I quick look under the bike and it's rubbing the front bottom edge of the rear fender. Barely... So I'm going to pull off the rear wheel and message the offender clear. Yay...

"Custom don't bolt on!"

Caveman
01-23-2016, 05:22 PM
quick question; why would you roll with it dropped all the way down? Unless you plan on some sort of failure of the system, you should pretty much always have some air and leveled off to some height. Correct?

The size difference does seem odd. I'm guessing its more about quality than quantity? There was some chatter on the forums about Baker having some issues with the spring pack for their comp, but I think they've solved that.

That damage looks pretty bad. And I dont think you had any symptoms, is that right?

At Sturgis this year, I'm going to schedule an appointment for them to do my comp and tensioner. They do free installs, so not a bad way to go.

Yes I'm planning on replacing my stator cup. I was told I could cut off the old one but I disagree without harming it's use.

One of the big reasons I took off the inner was to change the shifter shaft seal. However, I don't believe my stock lever arm has those problems that site is speaking about. There's zero play in my lever. Further even that site says the then new 6 speed has room to replace that lever without removing the primary.

The stock grills (not used) aren't subduing the color much...
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2078_zpsho1og5bx.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2078_zpsho1og5bx.jpg.html)

Here's the idea of the woofers installed...
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2077_zpstkiwxfwl.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2077_zpstkiwxfwl.jpg.html)

I'm also looking at adding another layer in my main woofer speaker grills to dull down the yellow color. I don't want to eliminate it, but with my custom speaker grills that match my wheels I'd like subdue the color a bit. I'm working on this with the grill vendor...

The option of the Hybrid (http://hybrid-audio.com/products/)'s is a combo of Legartia woofer with Clarus tweeter (use the "downgraded" tweeter because of the dome type being better on a bike).

The specs are close between these brands. The Focal's carry a large high end following... Some say the Focal's are clearer, but the Hyrbid's Legartia may have more bass. There are those that are huge brand followers for each of them. The Hybrid's are retail price about far less cost... but I've gotten into the Focal's for break even price. Let's march on...

Now one other consideration is tweeter mounting... I have a Hogtunes Tweeter pod. 3 options I will lay out...

1. I can't just hole saw cut the existing pod mounting holes, because it is right where the upper fairing is mounted.
2. Ditch 2 gauges and sink them, as many have done. Leaving the tweeter pod and running it off the stereo because the hogtunes can't handle the power from the amp, this makes them all but useless in comparison.
3. Make these, Focal's, fit in tweeter pod. The Hybrids will never fit, they are huge in comparison. This is a tight fit, so tight that they don't fit now. I would need to irreversibly modify the tweeter pod. It is SO SO SO close. It's challenging because the tweeter pod mount is directly behind the tweeter well.

I want to do option 3. I'd be one of, if not the first person to do this. Take a look...

Stock hogtunes...
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2072_zpsndmxu9rf.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2072_zpsndmxu9rf.jpg.html)

What I want... you can't tell, but it is sitting on top...
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2074_zpsbpaf93yx.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2074_zpsbpaf93yx.jpg.html)

But this would be the idea. The grill is also sitting up too high...

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2073_zps8tlx8fcq.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2073_zps8tlx8fcq.jpg.html)

I think it's worth the risk to make the tweeter pod work.

The amp is easy... there is one big hit swinger in the market. Arc Audio's Moto 600.4 (http://www.arcaudio.com/p/moto-600-4/amplifiers_moto-series?pp=24)

Waiting on a couple final primary job parts to come in...

Waiting on the stereo to get done with Iron Cross...

I have ordered hog tunes matching grills for the woofers because I like the look. I was going to make my own but with ordering them from hogtunes they will match the tweeter pod exactly.

Installed the radio

On the right side, I use to have my power block that was installed as part of my HIDs. It's really under used now, so I ditched it.

So I went with a 60 amp inline ANL fuse and tucked it down low
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2118_zpsi7vb8zb0.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2118_zpsi7vb8zb0.jpg.html)

This way I can access it with the fairing on, from between the forks and in front of the gas tank.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2119_zpsrc9b1sym.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2119_zpsrc9b1sym.jpg.html)

I have went from running all on the Focal crossovers, to trying to ditch them and running the cross over just on the amp. Trying to find the sweet spot... I can tell you this...

My speakers are INSANE loud!
The RCA conversion from Iron Cross doesn't compete with an aftermarket radio RCA outs. The response on the stereo volume isn't there. Every click of the volume doesn't equate to increased sound. The response is sloppy.
With the stereo at 65% & amp gain at 75% / amp at full freq into the Focal cross overs, the woofers don't like club pump Pitbull or rap. They will start to distort.
With the stereo at 65% & amp gain at 75% / amp at high pass and no Focal cross overs, the woofers are happy but the tweeters are taking a beating and not happy.
I've been told that Focal's will be one of the clearest and loudest speakers but they must be ran via their cross overs because they aren't as forgiving as the Hybrids or Arcs.
My next step is... gains at same but run high pass into the Focal cross overs. I need to nip out some of that low end bass that is causing distortion.

Currently this is where I am...

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2120_zpsaqpqfxzj.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2120_zpsaqpqfxzj.jpg.html)

I'm missing my new woofer mesh grills, some male to male/double donger RCA connectors (to eliminate the 3' RCA cords). I'm waiting on confirmation on my new idea and will do that adjustment and test. Also need to test fit my fairing again...

I totaly understand your reasons keeping the HK radio (turd lol) it's just the High end Focals threw me off. I ran the HK for a while, it had all the mods, IPod interface, PreAmp Outputs and LCD change, I was going to send it back in and get the blue tooth done, but decided it was time to push that turd out and I bought a Sony and the music sounds a lot better, with less distortion.
The Aquatica radio is from what I hear the best replacement radio as its plug and play not needing any hand control adapters. I'm going with it next.

RANT ON!!!

WTF is wrong with these small businesses?!?!

In 2013 I sent my radio to Iron Cross Audio for major repairs due to hitting the deer. They did the repair and I was very happy. They said to make sure the fairing brackets were not damaged, which wasn't an issue because I was completely replacing all of that... cause deer. NO OTHER ADVISEMENTS. I reinstalled the radio, the amp... everything on the front of the bike. Life goes on... This past summer I noticed my left channel was cutting out sometimes, I thought it was my iPhone cord... whatever... Meanwhile Dave's radio quits working and he sends it into Iron Cross, through the transaction they tell him the same thing about the brackets and that because he has an amp installed (I think he told them), to make sure the amp is zip tied down to avoid vibration damage. So this mod season I send my radio back to Iron Cross for RCAs to be installed, and told them to look at the left channel cutting out. They call me after X days, and say it was due to vibration, and ask about an amp on top... I said yeah, and I added zip ties this past summer, but I guess it was a bit too late. Now the long story long, punch line... they didn't inform me of the zip tie need before BECAUSE MY RADIO DIDN'T HAVE VELCRO EVIDENCE ON TOP OF IT!! WTF, it didn't have velcro because it has a CB module on top which has the velcro. They don't tell people to not use pressure washers or forced air on the radio faces unless there is evidence of water damage. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! 50% (I'm guessing low) of all touring bikes will be Ultras and have the CB, so they don't tell them that, because of velcro evidence?!?!!! This cost me additional $90 in repairs!!!!

Now with Baker drivetrain!! This is suppose to be a premier aftermarket company.

In 2013, once again with my deer accident, I purchased the Baker Bully outer primary cover. $1000 basically... Fast forward to this winter...

I order the Baker Compensating Sprocket, and went to install it. They told me on the phone that due to my year, I will most likely have to buy a new stator rotor cup, because mine will be welded on the back of the stock sprocket. No other questions or statements. I got the new HD stator cup, re-install the inner primary and test fit the new comp sprocket and clutch basket (minus the chain) per the instructions... start taking measurements for chain alignment (Baker spec, because HD no longer checks this because they suck and their parts have huge slack tolerances).... per Baker, must be under 0.030 difference from front to rear primary sprockets, my motor/front sprocket is outward by 0.045. BUT they are telling me that it should inward by no greater than 0.030 and then you could shim it out to spec. I'm the opposite....WTF. After 4 extra times of quadruple measuring, taking it apart, measuring, putting it back together, measuring it, torquing it in (makes it worse, directions say to just snug the sprockets into place), measuring it again... wasting 2 fuckin hours... FUCK IT, I'll call it Baker the next day. Meanwhile Nate finds a thread on HD forum (http://www.hdforums.com/forum/touring-models/1057954-baker-compensator-reviews-4.html) where Mark @ Baker (post 42 from 7-8-15) states...

So far most reviews have been good, they say it's more responsive, quiet and smoother. We have run into a couple chain alignment issues and we are starting to find out that a lot of chains are out of alignment right from the factory. The most common issue is that after the comp install the sprocket is out board of the clutch .060. So we have been taking about .040 off the motor extension shaft to get it back within the required .030". This problem does not seem to be model specific so we really can't pin point it yet. I also noticed in the new service manuals that Harley does not even talk about chain alignment when R&Ring the primary. I guess they don't find alignment important anymore. As for long term, remains to be seen, so far so good.

So Baker knows about this rare problem, but made ZERO FUCKIN reference in their instructions (printed on simple stapled paper) nor put in a little paper amendment... warning people "hey if you have this ass backwards problem, don't worry, just call us, we have a solution". I called them today, twice, and Mark said just send us the extension shaft and we'll machine that off 0.025 to put you back in spec. Alright cool... so I asked him, "hey I see i the instructions were Baker says to cut some oil deflectors off the outer primary (I confirmed they were referring to the stock outer). He said "oh you have the our bully outer? When did you get that?" I reply "Um Sep 2013" so I hear "Well box that up too, because even though we tested our comp sprocket on 12 stock bikes, we launched it forgetting to test it on our own outer primary cover." "YOU'RE SCREWING WITH ME?!" "No sir, it wasn't our most shining moment." Which I must add, they made ZERO REFERENCE in their instructions about their own outer primary cover... nothing like (please call if you have a pre-2015 Baker Bully outer primary cover). FUCK YOU BAKER!!

But then he didn't even offer to send me a return label.. WTF!! I spend $1500 on supposed "high end parts" and you want me to ship them back so you can fix your fuck ups at my shipping costs?!? I simply told him that it's BS and they should be bending over backwards to fix it, not put their customers out of more money, on top of more down time. So he said he would send me a label to cover shipping if I could box it up. OH how fuckin nice....

rant off...

Yeah and when I talked to Tony at Iron Cross...he asked me if I had a amp and I told him yes and that's when he told me about the zip tie the amp to the head unit to help with vibration ....there is no Velcro on my head unit being that I have my CB module and XM module on top of my radio, my Velcro is on them

Thanks for finding all these problems out for me before I stick my dick out on the line with this BS. But, I am sorry for your pain, and empathize, but again thanks for finding these problems.

Well I have to say you should never use pressure water or air any where near your dash, this should be a give me. your gauges and radio are water resistant not waterproof. Matter of fact I wouldn't use a pressure washer any where near any electrical plugs like the throttle body or other 1/2 way exposed plugs. All this stuff is only designed to keep light rain water out, not compressed air or water. Just use a damp rag and wipe your dash clean, one of those micro fiber rags works best.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMVSXi2JgpY

There are amp racks out there that will keep your amp suspended above the radio with out it touching and causing vibration damage.

Yeah I understand that. But with companies selling air blowers and shit it can be something else with what can be done.

So I played with the high pass crossovers on the amp, and the gains, and the speakers cross over settings. Ended up with the same setting as Dave & Moe (even though we have different speakers).
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2269_zpszho5bgxt.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2269_zpszho5bgxt.jpg.html)

I have the Focal cross overs tweeters on high pass and full sound. They offer the ability to turn down the tweeters -3 or -6. I have them at full.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2300_zpsdwkh8fv8.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2300_zpsdwkh8fv8.jpg.html)

The final lay down... Focal cross overs on the sides and the amp double zip tied down.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2301_zpsnjpy3xo3.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2301_zpsnjpy3xo3.jpg.html)

I ended up using a set of J&M fairing pads to tighten up the bass. Obvi there is a pad for each side.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2299_zps1bk3vltc.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2299_zps1bk3vltc.jpg.html)

Fairing all back on... the yellow being toned down is perfect. The sound is make your ears bleed loud. So clear!!

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2303_zpsjgrvqhnr.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2303_zpsjgrvqhnr.jpg.html)

Now if Baker will just get me back my parts... they called me on monday; told me the powder had pealed due to their machining and asked if I wanted it re-powdered. No shit I do... and I told him he should consider doing all the parts so they match. He said he would look into it. So now I wait.

Here's where they machined the inside of this outer primary. Notice they didn't even clean out all the holes at the 4 o'clock position
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2371_zpsvlwdi8wb.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2371_zpsvlwdi8wb.jpg.html)

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2372_zpsv0d7slsn.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2372_zpsv0d7slsn.jpg.html)

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2373_zpshreb8bl0.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2373_zpshreb8bl0.jpg.html)

So even after I told them to consider re-powder coating the other 4 parts... they didn't. It's off a shade. I tried some WD-40 to help the old powder along but...
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2369_zps3tpqsnp9.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Ultra%20Classic/2016%20Mods/IMG_2369_zps3tpqsnp9.jpg.html)

To further the problems they failed to re-cut or clean the powder off the edge where the outer and inner match. This creates a very very off color between the two. I think that was the purpose of it being machined clean. Because now, the two colors are next to each other.

After listening to many horns for cars, trucks, trumpets, trains, bikes... I found these Wolo Loud Ones (2 terminal) and I liked what I heard online from the low tone. $16 on amazon. Gotta try it.
