So a month ago the wife and I decided to go out with tradition and in with bar height dining. So I met with my cabinet lady and she made my drawing into this CAD design.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8752_zpsd948aa7b.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8752_zpsd948aa7b.jpg.html)

Which she said would look like this

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_3532_zpse4044724.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_3532_zpse4044724.jpg.html)

The cabinets were delivered Friday and I placed them where they needed to be... it was a good visual.

Saturday Nasty Nate and I got to work... let's see how this goes.

Get a measurement to build the toe kick

Measure twice

Let's set up our toe kick to draw it out....

Getting to cutting out the pergo

Nasty is Master Splinter and a Jedi at home improvement, but I still need to harass him

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8922_zpsc55e9df9.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8922_zpsc55e9df9.jpg.html)

We have the first side all installed
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8925_zps4eae966e.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8925_zps4eae966e.jpg.html)

I simply love doing these projects with Nasty. He's not only my brother in law but my best bud.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8952_zps7459095b.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8952_zps7459095b.jpg.html)

We are trying to figure out why the spacer is sitting so poorly against this cabinet....
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8926_zpsa831a1ea.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8926_zpsa831a1ea.jpg.html)

You can see Nate sanding the spacer down to fit the un-square/un-straight cabinet face. I'm doing some clean up. Saw dust on pergo is slippery

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8928_zps99933e7a.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8928_zps99933e7a.jpg.html)

We continued to run electrical to the tall pantries. and it took us longer to get these two cabinets installed than the other 4

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8931_zps7847f30b.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8931_zps7847f30b.jpg.html)

Ruger the Rottie came in to inspect.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8933_zps7a8a8ce5.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8933_zps7a8a8ce5.jpg.html)

So in only 8 hours of work time we are 95% finished....

We finished off the toe kick face, the 1/4 round on the floor
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8915_zpsbf1db240.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8915_zpsbf1db240.jpg.html)

We even put a piece of 1/4 round in the corner to finish it all off nicely.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8916_zps035c1090.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8916_zps035c1090.jpg.html)

Need to get some new granite installed and then we can finish the crown and scribe molding. And I can get some new bar stools and door knobs.

We are excited!

Looks great G! Didn't waste any time did you. I thought you were looking at the end of January on starting this. Layout looks awesome!!!... opens up the whole kitchen.
So why did you go with wall cabinets and build your own toe kick instead of base cabinets with the kick?
I see know, its a height /width issue.... standard base would have been to short / wide.... my bad.

Thanks and you're right, I didn't waste any time. I was shooting for mid Jan, but that was because I thought I was going to be by myself, having help made it quick.

Yeah it opens it right up!

You use top cabinets so you have only 12" depth. All base cabinets are usually 30" deep. I did the same thing on the other side of the room. The tall pantrys had their own detached toe kicks.

Have the granite guy coming out tomorrow to make a template. This second place I went to today was able to match my 5 year old granite perfectly. Which is cool. Should have the new granite on it by the end of next week. YAY!

RedneckMedic

And he even had time to try and melt cheese

Gas Man

So on the left we see that I found the matching granite from 5 years ago.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8961_zps7bed8a73.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8961_zps7bed8a73.jpg.html)

So Nasty Nate designed this from his head
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8957_zpsa5bd30ea.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8957_zpsa5bd30ea.jpg.html)

Took a measurement
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8956_zps784ba5a3.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8956_zps784ba5a3.jpg.html)

So him and I welded up some flat stock. It's not often that you get to weld with a kitchen cabinet project
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8972_zps01b87108.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8972_zps01b87108.jpg.html)

So here's where it will live, after some cabinet trimming
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8973_zpsc90e3f3a.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8973_zpsc90e3f3a.jpg.html)

Need to get it flush with the cabinet face
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8971_zpsa0139472.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8971_zpsa0139472.jpg.html)

Get to cutting
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8986_zps5e477b29.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8986_zps5e477b29.jpg.html)

I end up with this, cut up cabinet
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8981_zps797ff733.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8981_zps797ff733.jpg.html)

Keep checking level and fit
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8982_zps28c5dd52.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8982_zps28c5dd52.jpg.html)

There ya go
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8975_zps60bd0269.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8975_zps60bd0269.jpg.html)

I only had grade 8 bolts, but I think the 3/8" bolts should do the trick
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8977_zpse122c3e5.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8977_zpse122c3e5.jpg.html)

Triple check level and fitment
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8983_zps145dd87a.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8983_zps145dd87a.jpg.html)

It isn't the prettiest, but this will be covered, and it fits
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8980_zps6116ff89.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_8980_zps6116ff89.jpg.html)

owl
01-08-2015, 06:30 AM
Best guess? The welded thing supports the stone counter top

Gas Man
01-08-2015, 08:44 AM
Yeah what owl said. It's over a 60" run to the L, it will be 24" deep piece with 12" over cabinet and 12" over hang. While the L itself supports that end, it was debatable if I needed any support on this far left end. Some say it needed support, some said nah that the L will be all the support it needs being a single piece of granite. I can agree it would be fine as long as there isn't any extreme push down on the end. But I worry about a drunkin blunder and somebody falling and using the counter to pull up on.

I don't like to put things to chance. So we made this....

Good engineering on this G. Still need to be cautious though. Being cantilevered 12" will leave it somewhat venerable if you get to rough with it, slamming a pot, dropping something on it for example. Just a work of caution, you'll be fine though.... no kids right!.. lol

They are self adhesive LED strips, with a remote control and can transition between all 16 colors or hold on colors. I put them on the face of the cabinet above the doors.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_9018_zps14a6a522.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_9018_zps14a6a522.jpg.html)

I've also decided to get a small matching granite black splash to go under the cut out sill and along the other wall. It will match the exact same style as the cabinets across the room on the other side of the kitchen. Going to try and pick that up this week and I'll silicone it in myself so I can do trim this weekend.

Worky work.

I don't have one... where did you see that? And honestly if you want to, you can cut directly on granite. You technically don't need cutting boards, or pot holders.

I don't have one... where did you see that? And honestly if you want to, you can cut directly on granite. You technically don't need cutting boards, or pot holders. Otherwise, thanks gents. I'm very happy with it.My parents have one. Looks nice and gives that piece of mind.

Chris do you know how to work a CAD program

I don't.

OIC... I use pot holders... I would be worried that the ruff side of the granite would scratch the granite.

G.....give Dimitri a call on the cutting stone if you really want one. Now's the time, inexpensive! Lance Is right, Just set a small round pad on each corner on the underside of the cutting stone and your good to go. Don't be cutting shit on your counter, it will scratch!

So it's been decided that to match the other side of the kitchen... shown here

And to add that extra bit I ordered a 3" backsplash of granite. You get the idea with this scrap piece of granite
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_9011_zpsceed7e55.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_9011_zpsceed7e55.jpg.html)

I will remove the trim under the sill and the 3" granite will fit perfectly!!

I got the stools in today

They fit perfectly.

I have a 4th that I can bring in if need, but it will be a tight fit. Otherwise it's a spare.

Going to do the crown this weekend and the scribe molding once I get the backsplash in.

So my granite guy called me... this guy knows the way of "under promising and over delivering".

I devised a way to pick it up... methods.... they work
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_9034_zpse57164ef.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/House/Ktichen/Bar/IMG_9034_zpse57164ef.jpg.html)

Set it in place on the counter. This is basically as sweet as trim on wood work... but for granite. Perfect touch...

Now just to finish some actual crown and scribe molding and I'll be done!

Did the engineering take into account any sexual positions that may occur at such a height?!?!

This won't be an issue as Gas isn't near tall enough to lay out Teen on that countertop at that height and still hit the soft spot
