So Thursday night Nate and I started tearing into it...

We figured that was all we had to do on the top end... so..

Friday we started under the car... Dave joined us.

Dropping the drive shaft, unhooking the various trans things, dropping the exhaust pieces, etc..

Sat we broke the drivetrain down. The car told us her dirty secret.

Somewhere in its 33k existence before me she had a used trans and torque converter installed.

Pulled the lifter girdle, lifter dog bones, and the lifters themselves

All of that motor work made a hell of a mess. We then spent about 2 hours cleaning up the motor.

Transitioned to the gas tank job. Have to drop it and install a bigger gas pump.

Yeah but that being said... my buds 2013 stang 5 speed had a new trans after a month. My 2010 HHR SS had a new motor at 3k. Things happen. With the low milage of this car, I'm betting it was out of time on the warranty. Who knows.

Sunday brought all kinds more fun. While waiting for my buddy Tim (a real licensed mechanic) and Mustang owner/fan.

Started to work on the rear suspension...

Bought some new Eibach springs and urethane spring bushings. (R: 1" lower F: 1.25" lower)

That concludes Sunday and where we stand now.

Got a long list of things to do still....

Had to order new motor & trans mounts.
Have to tear into the front suspension. (upper strut mounts, springs, spring bushings, rack n pinion with tie rods)
Ordering new push rods tomorrow.
Have to replace the trans valve body, filter and torque converter.
Finish motor stuff
Marry the motor and trans back together
Clean up and paint engine bay
Put drivetrain back in
then a huge list of reconnect and get ready to fire.

True Dave... we ate like kings all weekend. We really didn't work too long of hours either. Sat. being the longest but if you take out the AZ run... probably a little over 6 hours. So that helped.

The upper intake doesn't clear the ultra tall dart valve covers. It would require a 1-1.25" intake spacer that doesn't exist for this setup and would have hood clearance issues. Change the plan.

Awesome. I remember starting my 70 mustang for the first time. Running to a buddies house at like 10 pm for carb (i know, wtf is that?) gaskets and getting it going late in the night. I am sure the neighbors loved me. I did however have an exhaust on mine.

Anyway, I got the car 96% done. Even got the hood back on.

Took it for a spin but it wouldn't come out of first. After some research tonight I believe it's a throttle linkage adjustment on the trans. Yes there are throttle cables down to the trans.

The car launches like a beast off the line, even with not really stepping hard into it. The thing sounds amazing... it has such a great lobe sound to the pipes with the idle set.

It still needs an alignment too, but the steering feels real nice with the new rack n pinion.

The stance of the lowering is perfect. With the top up the rear looks about a 1/4 inch higher, but I'm thinking that will change with the top down. Wasn't able to test because it was raining.

Going to try to adjust the trans cable tomorrow and hope it's nothing else. Gotta figure on a few bumps...

So I went to adjust the TV knockdown cable... in the pic below... the further cable goes to the pedal the closest is the tv cable.

It's a BS design made of stupid plastic. We didn't like it when we took it off the old TB, were majorly skeptical of it when we put it on the new TB, and now I hate it... here's why. The nipple broke off...

So I ordered a new complete cable that has a much simpler and easier to install piece for the TB. Having it overnight first thing Monday.

The instructions for the new cables talk about removing the old one is SOOO hard to just disconnect and secure out of the way, leaving it in the vehicle. Pfffftttt. This took me all of 8.34 mins to remove.

So I worked on a few small things while I wait for the tv cable.

I put some trim on the fender apron where the power pipe goes through.

I then pulled the TB to work on the "whistle". BBK said to work on the butterfly bypass tube. 1 in like 25 may cause a whistle per BBK.

Anyway, I got the car 96% done. Even got the hood back on.

Took it for a spin but it wouldn't come out of first. After some research tonight I believe it's a throttle linkage adjustment on the trans. Yes there are throttle cables down to the trans.

The car launches like a beast off the line, even with not really stepping hard into it. The thing sounds amazing... it has such a great lobe sound to the pipes with the idle set.

It still needs an alignment too, but the steering feels real nice with the new rack n pinion.

The stance of the lowering is perfect. With the top up the rear looks about a 1/4 inch higher, but I'm thinking that will change with the top down. Wasn't able to test because it was raining.

Going to try to adjust the trans cable tomorrow and hope it's nothing else. Gotta figure on a few bumps...

So I guess we don't use dynos then because BHP is a dyno measurement.

So 1 out of 25, per BBK the manufacture of my new 75mm throttle body, will whistle at idle... that's my luck.

This TB butterfly idle bypass passage is where it's whistling... like blowing over a bottle opening..

We tried and tried and tried... but...

I failed at my trans adjustment. It simply isn't working correctly. The trans valve body manufacture said it may be a fault with my new part. That is my freakin luck!! The local trans shop said they think the tv valve is sticking in the new part. With the pending doom of seriously messing up the trans ++ my absolute frustration. I fold... let the pros take a whack at it. FML

So just as my luck goes...

The NEW trans valve body I bought for street/strip with shift kit... yeah after 2 weeks of f'in with the trans, and hours messing with the trans psi. The trans shop couldn't get it right either... so they got my stock valve body... put it in, BAM! Psi was able to be adjusted.... also they noticed it already had a shift kit on it.. $200 bill and I'm back where I started with this aspect... so he said keep the valve body I have because it works well with the shift kit and the big torque converter. BUT I really need to install a trans cooler WITH a fan. So I returned the $230 valve body and ordered a $150 trans cooler with electric fan + $30 in nice brass fittings to run it in series with the current trans cooler in the radiator. My motor has a nice dual core radiator so might as well make sure the trans runs cool.

I got the alignment done today... other than straightening the steering wheel, we did a good install. Just the toe was messed up... which is part of why the steering wheel was not set right.

My rear fender is rubbing a bit with passengers over 200# in the car... so I stopped by my body shop that did the paint... going to drop it off in a little over a week.. he'll have it for a day and is going to shave my fender well lips and repaint the cut edge. He believes this is a better idea vs. rolling the fender lip. I trust his judgement.

Otherwise... installing the trans cooler and slight fender lip fix... the car is done. I drove it about 70 miles today running all around with appts and arrons. It's sweet.

Probably next weekend I'll change the red zinc oil out of it for standard amsoil.

I ran it all on a relay... I made my own harness and everything. I really out did myself on the install.. but all of that adds up to taking me about 4 hours.

This was a trans shop recommendation.

But please understand, I don't have a choice in doing it during "warm" months. My garage isn't big enough to do it during the winter.

I did drive it last weekend. Couldn't drive it this week because I was out of town for work. This week is also F'ed because it's going to the body shop for rear fender shave, then I get it back and will be out of town for 2 more days. All of which why I can't ever seem to get free time.
