So I started into this year with a stang as a toy project car, 2 bikes, a company car, HBD truck, and the wife's car. I'm picking up a "room mate" as well in Aug... that's another story but also another car.

Time to expand the driveway... I called upon my friend Moe. Him being out of work, he set me up with his brother running the biz.

We got delayed by weather and other scheduling complications but.. we eventually got it going...

So earlier this week, they came by and got to work.

Got the forms set, I just had to re-do some sprinkler bits.

Had some old failing walkway here that is removed. We are using the landscape bricks as the form here.

I'm surprised you went with a smooth finish. We used to do a rough finish with a broom after working the rocks down. The smooth finish can be slippery as hell. Also was surprised to not see any relief cracks like you have in your driveway or side walks. When we used to lay cement years ago I was told cement will crack, PERIOD. Even if we used rebar to stabilize it like you did the mesh screen. Of course I did cement back in the 80's so maybe I remember wrong. It does look great. I said when I bought my house in 91 that I was going to put a cement driveway in since I know how. I never did.

Concrete has a broom finish to it Chef. All the control joints were cut in this morning with a walk behind saw. I didn't take any pics of the finished slab but I'm thinking G man will put some up. No more juggling cars around or parking in the street for him that's for sure.

You have water running on that new slab . Looks like your sprinklers or you were spraying something down with your hose nozzle. Pics show the slab wet and drying in areas.

Looks great but you should have tuned the sprinklers off... I really need to do that to my back yard.

No water running on it... I sprayed down the non-new driveway but not the new stuff. It has those drying spots, wet looking spots in a few places... at the bottom and at the top near the gate.

But I am NOT watering the new cancrete.

I was always told to keep the curing concrete dampened. is that wrong?

Gas Man
06-26-2014, 09:27 PM
That is wrong. I double checked..

The concrete gets hot when it's curing. It's hot all day. then you for a matter of a few mins or so put 40* water on it super fast cooling it.. bad. Then it heats back up once the water evaporates and then it is rapid back to hot. All of that causes it to expand and contract too fast. best is to just leave it be.

Nice. Good to see the brotherhood sticking together. Got to keep our little network strong.

Concrete takes like 24 years to fully cure - turns green in the middle.
