View Full Version : Jim's (owl) long ride

04-17-2014, 09:52 PM
Got a late start. I left Michigan, noon on Wednesday and it was a bit cool. I was OK until about Marshall MI. and I had to take a warm up break. I did spend an extra few minutes at fuel stops to catch a little heat. Through Ft Wayne and almost to Indianapolis before I stopped for lunch. It took about 30 minutes to find the speedway and after a picture another 30 minutes to get back on course. Seven hours and 415 miles later in Plainfield IN. I called it for the first day.

Sounds like your off to a nice trip. Be safe Jim

Day two. Nice scenic ride from Plainfield to Evansville IN. Then through Henderson KY. I picked up some long named parkway and rode it to Kentucky lake, where I followed the two line roads through Murray KY and stopped for a break at an indi bike shop. Couple of their customers were going to Memphis and I rode along. Route 461 I think was a very nice ride but it wasn’t the scenic road I planed on. We came to I 40 122 miles east of Memphis. So I’m 2 hours east of where I wanted to be and it’s not looking like Little Rock tonight. I ran across I 40 for two hours (well almost two hours) at 85 mph + and when I stopped in Memphis for fuel my bike didn’t want to cooperate. Engine lite on, no throttle response and very high idle. After it cooled down for 20 minutes things worked better. I got to Forrest City Arkansas no problem but there are still idle issues. 557 miles in 11 hours today. Tomorrow I hope to make Dallas Texas.

Almost forgot today’s pictures. First is scenic Indiana & second, the Indi shop where my misadventure started.

Day three; I hoped things were going to improve, but no. Map Quest is way off on their travel times. Iím running about 8 over on the speed limit and Iíve been stopping for a stretch and drink of water between fuel stops and fuel only takes an extra 5 minutes. Map says 5hr 17min and 325 miles Dallas to Lubbock, wrong, 7hr and 385 miles. You guys would like Texas, very nice roads and 75 mph is the posted speed. Enough of that.
My engine idle issue disappeared after the next fuel stop. It had to be really bad gas. The bike has run great since.

it's summer time in Arkansas

I call it at 7:00 pm Thursday evening in Forrest City AR. Friday morn I was ridin at 8:15 am and only short rest break and fast gas stops, other than a short chat with an Arkansas State Trooper ( he asked if I was OK at a fuel stop) I run it hard. 410 miles in 8 hours got me to Dallas Texas. Dallas has awful, no God Awful, freeways. Most are in a construction phase with poor signage. The George Bush Parkway (toll road) is nice. I planned to spend a few days in Dallas but I couldnít get out fast enough. Had early dinner with Cousin Randy and stayed the night at Cousin Larryís.

nice car too
Up early Saturday and on the road at 9:00 am north to Denton than west on the Texas 380. This has to be the best hwy yet. Curves, ups and downs, and 75 mph. I arrived in Lubbock just as the rain got here.

If the rain passes through Iíll leave for Clovis NM, Albuquerque, and Gallup (This could be 450 miles). And that will leave a 5/6 hour ride to Phoenix.

Start time 04/20/2014 7:55 am DST. Everything in Lubbock is wet from the all night rain, but it’s not raining now (I’m off). Thought I would get wet several times and drove through some great fog (5 miles ?). Got to Clovis New Mexico 9:40 am 100 miles. It’s 52*& cloudy without traffic (a few trucks) I’m wearing warm gear and thinking “this is an awesome TWC”.

From Clovis I take US 84 to Fort Sumner, turn and cruise to Santa Rosa NM. Another 105 miles and 2 hours. Stopped at route 66 museum for 10 minutes crossed the street and had brunch.

Some interesting things to see along the highway, but not too many opportunities for pictures. 115 miles & 2 hrs.

Albuquerque to Gallup NM was OK. Lots of trucks on the Hwy and I’m seeing more car this evening than most of the day. I have put 2351.1 miles on my bike since leaving home noon Wednesday. Nine and a half hours to day.

04-20-2014, 08:55 PM
Awesome Jim! Really digging your posts.

04-20-2014, 08:56 PM
He said it cleared up and assumption is bad gas.

Ah, ok, missed that. I'm fortunate, I've never had bad gas. Well, my wife would disagree, but not in my bike.

04-20-2014, 09:41 PM
Keith it was a strange experience. Stopped for fuel, filled it up with premium, started the bike and moved from the pump to a parking space. Got a bottle of water, drank Ĺ of it and tried to start the motorcycle. No engine lite, no throttle response and 2000 rpm idle speed. 15/20 minute cool down and the throttle worked, so I said f it drove away. 134 miles later I got fuel (premium fill up). Move from pump to parking space and did another water. I started the bike and noticed a slower idle speed. I drove about ĺ miles and stopped. After that. The engine lite works and the idle is where it should be. Really bad gas (fuel) is my only explanation

From the Petrified Forest it was a short hop to Holbrook AZ for fuel and a water. The road to Payson AZ is a super bike route, 55/65 mph awesome curves and 6000 ft change in elevation. I could have turned around and rode it again. In Payson I stopped for sun screen a water and the rest room. Out of Payson, close to a mile I stop and get rid of the warm weather gear. High of 68* in Payson and every few miles toward Phoenix the temp got higher. 93* sunny and bright at Mom’s.

Well! Today is my last day to relax, because the adventure continues on Friday. My folks are leaving on vacation Friday morn (3 months of vacation). I’m going to mis Phoenix. I’m sitting on the patio with a cup of coffee and Danish, writing this chapter, in shorts & T-shirt (66*).
A close friend (AZBear) lives south of Tucson Arizona, and I’ll be staying with him for a few days. Gene and I plan on riding over to Tombstone and as many other places as we can in 3 or 4 days.
Its 7:20 am not a cloud in the sky, 67*and I’m lovin it. More tomorrow or the next day

I emailed Long Ride Shield this morning (6:45 am) and asked what to use & how to clean my windshield. I got an answer at 7:23 am from James Ferlingere director of operations-LRS. These are great people to deal with and when I need another windshield, LRS is where I’m going

04-24-2014, 10:44 AM
Nice bugs! Any update on how your windshield mod is performing?

04-24-2014, 10:54 AM
I can't say my windshield mod did fantastic things, but as you can see it kept the bugs off of me. I wish I had the 13" LRS as the 12" on there now is just that 1" short. My modification to the windshield does help some but not as much as hoped for. If nothing else the way I mounted that looks cool

For that much bug guts, I'd soak a towel in hot hot water and then just lay it on the windshield and let it soak... done that many of times on road trips..

04-24-2014, 04:24 PM
Mild soap & towel about 5 min bugs gone for now

It’s on the road again. Drove away from mom’s house shortly after 9:00 am, hung out at the cable company’s store till they opened (10:00am) and returned the cable box for my folks. They wanted to leave on their trip early. I slowly made my way across Phoenix ( a trip to Jack in the box for a taco)

These tacos are like White Castle burgers
and down to Tucson where I stopped at another dealer to wait for a friend (AZBear).

From Tucson we rode to Sahuarita (where Gene & his lovely wife live).

I'm with Gas on the bugs. A towel large enough to cover the windshield and the fairing, and soak it in the hottest water you can still touch it with. let her soak and the reapply again. then on the final soak start a wipe off and get the bug slide reapplied.

We (AZBear & owl) got started about 8:00 am this morning. East across southeast Arizona to the Chiricahua National Monument. The ride across was different. We battled high winds (30 to 40 mph) that brought in cool temps (62*). But the sights were worth it.

Arizona is having a very dry year, but don’t fear Jim is here. It rained from Nogales north to a mile from Gene’s house (54km). We’re in for the evening and planning tomorrows journey. 356 miles today.

Yes a Dyna with a Batwing. AZBear ride most days. 55,000.+ miles in 4 seasons

A little later start today, but after breakfast at the Mexican restaurant, we’re off. Almost no wind and the temps in the 70’s. Madera Canyon in, through and out just six miles but beautiful.

Than to Arivaca on another outstanding road. I’ll wait here for all you sport bike guys, cause this road is it. From Arivaca to the border town of Sasabe AZ nothing much there except the border crossing, and again the roads to get there are the best.

Cool pics Jim...awesome scenery...glad your living it up! ride on :rockwoot:

04-28-2014, 08:07 AM
Dave I thought I would be” living it” up by now, but no. The first day was an adventure, the second day a nice long ride. Day three, a boring day spent on the bike. Each day has brought some unique sights, interesting people, challenges, questions and thoughts. Today it is almost “living it up”. The next couple of weeks will be different. I’m trying to get a class on the Dynamometer at Power Commander (Las Vegas). So there is a waiting period to fill. After Power Commander (really from day one) this adventure becomes a personal challenge. Long days in the saddle, eating junk foods, sleeping on the ground and personal issues will take its toll on me over the several weeks left on my journey. I’m at the point of no return, going forward, praying for the best.
Yea I’m “living it up” no really, this is a great way to spend a few weeks of vacation.

04-28-2014, 08:17 AM
Sleeping on the ground?

Whats up with the class, just educational/fun?

04-28-2014, 09:48 AM
“Sleeping on the ground” creates just enough drama to the story and turns it in to a comedy.
The class will be fun and educational, and I hope to get my Roadie super tuned. I may have Power Commander install Auto Tune if the price is right.
Not being a gambler makes Las Vegas a boring place.

04-28-2014, 09:58 AM
Have a few drinks, grab a show or two and just people watch in Vegas Jim. Your trip is fun to follow, very cool.

Tuesday April 29 2014

Rode up from Sahuarita, on the Pinal Pioneer Pkwy (another outstanding two lane) to Coolidge Arizona. Got a little turned around and stopped at the police station for directions (they most always know where to go and how to get there)
http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm225/owl1289/IMG_20140429_111911_4171.jpg (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/owl1289/media/IMG_20140429_111911_4171.jpg.html)
While I was there I noticed a sign about Casa Grande Ruins. So with proper directions that’s where I’m going
http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm225/owl1289/IMG_20140429_113251_1361.jpg (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/owl1289/media/IMG_20140429_113251_1361.jpg.html)
This is National Park and though the visitor center was closed for remodeling the ruins are available for viewing. These structures were use through the 12th and 13th century.

From Coolidge ti was a short run up Casa Grande Hwy to Maricopa. I am staying with my wife’s sister and her husband for a few days. When my mission is finished here I’ll be on my way to Las Vegas. The Roadie is safely parked in the garage.

Happy Motoring

Time for another chapter.
Tuesday was BIL/SIL’s anniversary. They had dinner plans and invited me. Wednesday was a day to unwind and Thursday brought a new adventure. My sister in law noticed her husband being somewhat disorientated, and not very responsive to questions. SO we get him in the car & off to the Doctors office. The Doc says you must go to the hospital, and that’s where I spent my day on Thursday. Bill (BIL) has a good start on phenomena and a sinus infection and will be staying with those pleasant folks at Chandler Regional Medical Center. I’ll be here through the week end.

Back on the road this morning. I’ll start with BIL / SIL’s home, as I forgot to post pic upon arrival, so this departing shot will have to do.

Someone asked, a few pages ago, about the Dyna with Batwing, now we have Heritage softail with Batwing. Andy redesigned the fairing to add some protection for his hands and he put a small curve, up and out, in the center, top edge. Awesome paint, Jessie James gas tank, 110 anniversary S&S motor, and some chrome to get you home. Nice bike.

I’ll be in Kanab Utah tonight. 4853 miles at today's end.

I received a call from my daughter, a niece (my favorite) that lives in Penn Yen New York, passed away (not sure of the cause) so I will be heading home tomorrow. I'm about 1700 miles from Michigan.

Left Kanab Utah late (9:30 am) going north for Grand Junction CO. A quick side trip into Bryce Canyon is enlighting, as there is snow all over the place and it’s cold (38*).

this is on the way to Bryce

this is west of Page (lake Powell)

Walked around the motel parking lot last evening and took a few pics of motorcycles. May have been a few sport bikes, a couple BMW’s and a metric or two, but most were HD’s. Over 50 in all. I believe the majority are rentals, as there were several support trucks from the land of fruits & nuts.

7:30 am is my start time today (Wednesday 5/14) and the temps are high 40’s, sun is out with no wind. East toward Durango Colorado. I stopped at the four corners on my way. Utah, Arizona, New Mexico & Colorado all meet at this spot.

From Kayenta east is part of Monument Valley, so I tried to get some pictures. I should have stopped for more but I was hoping to cover a fair amount of miles today.

I did take a break at Durango Harley Davidson. Pleasant folks and nice place.

I should get a dumb ass of the year award. I went south and east to avoid a cold and snowy mountain pass only to experience two of them. Wolf Creek Pass north east of Durango is 11,000ft and cold (38*). Eight miles up and eight miles down were not too terrible.

Two pic's on the way down from Wolf Creek Pass

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm225/owl1289/IMG_20140514_140458_8911.jpg (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/owl1289/media/IMG_20140514_140458_8911.jpg.html)

I stopped in Alamosa, thinking I’m over it, when someone said the way to the east is through La Veta Pass. Again cold (39*) but just 9400ft. I’m on our side of the continental divide now. In Walsenburg, Colorado with 5585.9 miles traveled.

I left Welsenburg CO at 7:15 am. And it was cold (34*). The sun was out and that warmed things up quickly. High 40’s to low 50’s almost all the way across Colorado and 2/3rd of Kansas. I got to Salina Kansas before 6:00 pm their time. Close to 10 hours on the road and 514 miles.

Stopped at Salina Harley Davidson for a picture (the only pic today) and directions to a motel.

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm225/owl1289/IMG_20140515_170806_7001.jpg (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/owl1289/media/IMG_20140515_170806_7001.jpg.html)

I started this trip (I have all the fuel receipts) getting 33/34 mpg and the last 6 or 7 tanks have yielded 41/44 mpg. Perhaps the fuel is of better quality in Utah, Colorado and Kansas. From Lamar CO to Garden City KS is 100 miles of flat nothing with a road, straight as an arrow. One can see for miles and miles and nowhere to hide. So I have the cruise set at 69 mph with only a truck or three, when all of a sudden there’s a Kansas state Trooper 20’ behind me. He backed off a few more feet for about 5 miles and then passed me like I was stopping. Weird

With luck tomorrow will end in Terra Haute Indiana or close to it.
Ending mileage today 6099.3

Great adventure Owl.

We planned on doing a route 66 trip this summer, 2 weeks, but I ended up buying this extra bike, and I'm building a pole-barn for my toys, so maybe next year. ;)

Again, Great adventure!!!! Be safe the last part of your journey home!!!

Out of Salina Kansas at 7:30 this morning. The weather is not helping with 36* temps in the morning and not rising above 49* the rest of the day. Having quit the sightseeing portion of this adventure, I got on I-70 east and set the cruise at 75 mph for the long haul. There is an outrages amount of truck traffic, with a fair number of automobiles. This makes the ride interesting and challenging too.

I stopped at another HD dealer for a warm up break (Blue Springs east of Kansas City) and a chat with Dam. Dan was hanging out while his Roadie was being serviced.

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm225/owl1289/IMG_20140516_115636_7941.jpg (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/owl1289/media/IMG_20140516_115636_7941.jpg.html)

This is Missouri. (big deal)

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm225/owl1289/IMG_20140516_150719_3131.jpg (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/owl1289/media/IMG_20140516_150719_3131.jpg.html)

From Kansas City to St Louis I-70 was bumper to bumper, cars and trucks, at 80 mph (exciting). Missed my turn in St Louis, so I doubled back and got out of there. I would have liked to get pictures of the Arch and bridge over the Mississippi river, but found no place that offered a good view.

I pulled into Greenville Illinois about 5:30 as the sky's turned dark & stormy. Wished I could have gotten another 100 miles, but cold and rain put a stop to that.

I’m in for the evening, 6604.4 miles.

I thought this was going to be The Last Chapter of Jim’s long ride, and perhaps it will be. I got on my Roadie a little after 7:00 am Saturday morning with a full tank of gas and a bagel in my belly. The weatherman said 38* with temps climbing into the 60’s (WRONG). Crossing Illinois was uneventful and the roads of Indiana were much the same. As I passed Ft Wayne IN the rain started. I had a light rain off and on till Marshal Michigan, where I stopped for fuel. Another rider stopped shortly after I and we talked for a few minutes. The guys riding a V-Rod and headed for Saginaw MI.

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm225/owl1289/IMG_20140517_162844_7651.jpg (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/owl1289/media/IMG_20140517_162844_7651.jpg.html)

OK, I hat up and head for the highway. Stop at the stop sign but the young lady (in a car) behind me doesn’t stop. Now I’m almost in the road way and calling the cops. 45 minutes later with a dented rear fender I have 161 miles to go.

It rained and stormed through Ann Arbor, than the sun shone for the last few miles. I arrived in my driveway close to 6:30 EDT. 530 miles on the last day and Seven thousand one hundred thirty four (7134.4) miles, start to finish.
