Ok... so first I did the car change up (http://www.twowheelmichigan.com/showthread.php?5284-Car-change-up-at-Gas-Man-Garage) and got a new stang. That was going well till I messed up the intention of the mustang and made it into a toy and maybe a show piece (http://www.twowheelmichigan.com/showthread.php?5799-The-Stang-game-changing-pic-heavy).

So I needed an actual beater. I ruled out CL because I get sick of that shit. So I asked FB for some options. I found out that one of my old retired guys from another gas company I use to work with (also know his daughter & son in law), was selling his old truck. A 1985 GMC pick up. It use to be a Tennessee truck for most of it's life, it was refurbed once back in the day but she's starting to rust. It has 135k on the clock but the rebuild was abt @ 100k. V-8 (305CI) auto (3 speed).

It needs some TLC, old guy hasn't used it in a few. I have to get 2 new tires, a tune up (wires look ok, but plugs look like poop but has a miss), and the water pump pulley has a wabble but not leaking so probably get a new one. Needs cleaned bad. Just a few random things.... but got it a for a decent price... drives and brakes straight. Super easy and cheap to work on. Down the road I will probably put some new shocks on it.

Will get better pics once I get to it and get it cleaned up.

Pretty soon (if not already), getting a vehicle out of your garage or driveway is going to be like working a puzzle.

Cool truck. Air bags , shaved emblems , handles , roll pan and you'll be in business. My dad had a couple of 85 bow tie trucks , they had troubles with wiping cam lobes. So minus well throw a 3/4 race cam in'er.

Gas Man

It had an engine rebuild done once before... so it has a Holley 4 barrel (maybe a 600), Edelbrach Street Dominator intake, and some tube headers. I was also told it has solid lifters. Just has a small miss, that I'm hoping is just a bad plug or wire... the plugs rough rough looking (exterior). The truck has been sitting for a couple years.

The hood is the worse exterior spot of rust. Going to scrap the pealing off, wire brush the rust off, then matte trim black paint just the hood. That should look cool against the somewhat gloss of the rest of the truck.

I got in the engine bay to change the spark plugs. Previous owner had a new set in the glove box so I did that in the good weather.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Vechicles/85%20GMC/IMG_5797_zpsc871f3c2.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Vechicles/85%20GMC/IMG_5797_zpsc871f3c2.jpg.html)

The spark plugs were... well the front were great. The rears were all sorts of messed up. Perhaps the lift adjustment will help, not running the gas tank to fumes, and I may rebuild the carb too for good measure. On top of that I'm going to do the wires, cap, rotor, and the water pump. All the parts are so cheap... it's awesome!!
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Vechicles/85%20GMC/IMG_5798_zps88fe3aa8.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Vechicles/85%20GMC/IMG_5798_zps88fe3aa8.jpg.html)

I think the passenger plugs covered with what looked like dirt and oil may be from the lifters and valves and the burning oil the old guy spoke of. The white baking soda look on the drivers side rears I believe is a sign of bad gas. Which could be very true.

Yeah that's my plan. I may even do a carb rebuild. I need to find out what exact holley model it has. I'm also working with the guy I bought it from to find out what cam it has. I guess I need to know that to set the valve lash...

I hear ya but I simply don't know it. Jon, do you know how to do the solid lifter valve lash adjustment? Do I need to know what cam is in it?

I'm thinking of ordering a carb rebuild kit... I looked up the carb on Holley.com and I think the complete rebuild kit is only $27. But I also have no idea what I'm doing with it! May order a service manual for the carb...

Also I believe there is a leak which is causing some environmental concerns that we may need to involve the EPA. Please consider your moral obligation to your neighbors who may want to sell in the future.

I think that camo paint job should be GasTank's next mod!

Go for the Harley Dark look. Mix half gloss and flat black Rust Oleum and put it on with a roller. The texture will cover all those little body imperfections.

I haven't updated this in a bit...

I had to replace the gas tank... so I went to work on it.. borrowed the heated work garage after hours...

But that's not the issue at this point... the rusted out tank mounts that I wasn't expecting!

$100 for the gas tank and would be $165 for new mounts w/straps. But I got lucky, for once, and a buddy doing a drag race truck, gave me his old tank setup that was all complete. So I used that and returned my previous purchased tank.

After soaking the bowls, and extensively cleaning the rest of the carb, start re-assemble. Here you can see the metering block all back together.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Vechicles/85%20GMC/IMG_6123_zpsd21c67a2.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Vechicles/85%20GMC/IMG_6123_zpsd21c67a2.jpg.html)

Then I finally also replaced the rubber heater hoses with some from the big truck shop, these are silicone based and won't break down like the rubber. Sure looks like Ford Racing blue under the hood of this GMC. LOL
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Vechicles/85%20GMC/IMG_6128_zpsa06551b1.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Vechicles/85%20GMC/IMG_6128_zpsa06551b1.jpg.html)

After putting the carb back on, we adjusted the float bowl levels and then adjusted the idle. I followed up the carb rebuild with another new set of plugs. Tomorrow I'm going to check and adjust the timing. But she's really coming along... I'm happy with it.

I also picked up a trans filter and pan gasket, and ordered a shift solenoid. When the truck is cold it don't like to shift out of first... so that will probably be next weekend.

So on my way back over to Nate's, the truck was running like real shit! Then finally died on me. Well unknown to me, when the guys were drying off the carb bowls they used the shop paper towels... the blue kind. Anyway, they missed a piece! We played with the accel pump nozzle and when that didn't fix it, we tore the carb all apart and found this little piece stuck in one of the main jets!!

Not by your standard. I don't have any interest in performance upgrades... I just want solid reliable good operation.

I barely used any actually. Just used a little on the bolt holes. I just made a mess when I fed the bolts past the rubber gasket before I put the pan up into place. I used a spray on rubber gasket adhesive jazz, same stuff I use on my rad hoses for extra seal. Love this stuff... Don't get to use it much, have had the same can for 10+ years.

Didn't take too long... probably 2 hours but we had to perma-fix the so I could get defrost air. So we did and it works awesome now.

Also, did my first non-nessicary repair... I replaced the shit-astic speakers with the cheapest I could buy at ABC Warahouse. Then took the old kenwood that came with my stang and put it in place of the old 2-knob that was cutting out terribly.

I like the ole truck... it has character and actually rides pretty well... like hillbilly cadillac.

Additional benefit - less lawn to mow!He likes that too much though. He's like forest gump and would just keep on cutting.

I ended up selling the HBD... things change... I'm going to buy out my neighbor on the truck that we shared. It's a 2001 Chevy, standard cab, V-8, 8ft bed, old work truck from my work. I got it from my work, sold it to him, I borrowed it a bunch, helped work on it a bunch... now he wants to get a new truck... his daughter is turning 16 in December so he needs to change up his cars... so I am too.
