JOSHUA TREE — A vintage Harley-Davidson stolen in Minnesota 28 years ago was recovered by the California Highway Patrol this month.
The stolen 1934 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was recovered at the Morongo Basin CHP office Oct. 1. It was originally stolen in a home burglary in July 1985 in St. Paul, Minn., Officer Alex Scott said.
A 66-year-old Joshua Tree man took the motorcycle to the CHP office for a vehicle identification number inspection on Oct. 1. He said he got the bike in exchange for labor in 1985, when he lived in Minnesota.
“He is not a suspect and apparently was helping a friend move in St. Paul, Minn., in 1985 when he was approached by a 25-year-old white male who asked if he would help the man move,” Scott said.
The 25-year-old paid the man with the bike and some hand tools.
The owner of the motorcycle, Noble Handley, 58, now living in Wyoming, was contacted on Oct. 28 after the CHP office received the original stolen-vehicle report from the St. Paul Police Department and tracked down the owner.
“The owner was ecstatic that his motorcycle had been recovered and is making arrangements to ship the vehicle home,” Scott said in a news release.
