I have the Inner Fairing removed and the Heat Shields removed to be color matched to my bike. I tagged everything so I knew where it all goes back, and labeled sandwich bags with the parts inside.

I have removed the Handlebars and going to add 10" Apehangers (Wild1 Chubby's 578's). I chose these because I want my arms level with my shoulders, or slightly lower. I do not want my arms higher then my shoulder. I chose this because I plan on doing LONG rides and from what I have read, having your arms higher then your shoulders does not work out so well.

I am trying to put together a parts list so I can get rolling on this in January sometime. I want to have everything done by April at the VERY latest. This gives me time to do things at my own pace. (As well as come on here and ask questions when I am stuck!) LOL

I will keep you guys updated as I complete the work.

Other items I plan on buying:

Customized Shift Linkage
Lower Windshield, Limo Black, for zipping around in the city.
Thinking about new Chrome housings and Grips as well.

Kosher, are your arms higher then shoulder height with your bars? If so any issues on long runs?

No. I'm 5019, I have 12.5" Wild 1s. I've had 14"s on my Road King and my Heritage before that, I'd say they were pretty close to perfect. I thought I'd try going a little bit lower with my Road Glide, thinking that it would make slow speed maneuvers easier, and I really cant tell the difference.

At some point I'll go back to 14"s.

Consider doing heated grips while you're there... HD's are plug and play...

Otherwise, good job. Let me know if you need help. Maybe I can just come and hang out at your crib....

I was thinking about the heated grips as well. No prob hanging, beer and food on da house.

If you haven't ordered the bars yet I say go sit on something with apes if you've never had then before. I think 10in will make them more comfy but I don't think they will be high enough for you. Your a big guy and could probably go 18 before there over your shoulder.

I have 16s and there right at shoulder height but rocked forward for a more aggressive riding position.

That being said Im not a fan of bat wings with giant apes so I wouldn't go over 12in. Another thing to consider is with the 10 in apes I don't think the fairing mount mirrors will work because your hands will be right in front of them at that point.

That is my thoughts as well. I do not want to have giant apes with the Batwing. I do not like that look. I might go with the 12.5 Apes. I have not ordered them yet. I emailed Wild1 to get their input on a parts list and estimated cost.

I am not sure if fairing mounted mirrors would work for me because I do not know if I can see around my big ass. LOL

My bud rick got a nice set of 14's that drop down at the grips...

16's are a common height so easy to try those on for size. Any decent dealer should have a few of these somewhere, in used bikes or customer bikes... maybe a trip there to check it out..

Klimoman
12-02-2013, 07:00 PM
Thanks, I will check it out. Researching cables. I need + 6. Looked at Barnett and Magnum. I need to buy the TBW too. They say that makes running the wires through the bars easier. I really do. Not want to solder any wires.

RedneckMedic
12-02-2013, 09:24 PM
I didn't extend any wire with my 16's. Cables I got from LA chopper in a kit. They worked very well. I had barnetts stainless braided on my shadow and snapped a throttle and clutch cable in a year.

I wired the new amp, speakers, and heated grips today. Stuffed polyfill around the speakers. The system sounds awesome!

Amplifier: Rockford Fosgate PBR 300 watts (2 Channel)
Speakers: Biketronics 7.1

Still plugging along.... Need to hook up new clutch and brake cables on the apehangers, put the exhaust back on, and few more odds and ends and I will be done with he majority of the winter project.

Come on Spring!

Looks good bro. I'm interested in the polyfill, I've considered doing this but I'm concerned about moisture getting in causing mold. Not sure about your bike but Road Glide fairings are anything but water tight.

UltraNutZ on HDFORUMS swears by it and he seems very knowledgeable when it comes to audio. GasMan mentioned the moisture aspect as well. I added the poly fill to the rear speakers boxes as well. Only time will tell I guess....

Moisture was my concern... now they do make "caps" you can mount behind the speakers... that might be an idea.

thanks man, I appreciate it. I'm glad I did all the work myself. Good stress reliever to get away in the garage, and to save some cashola too!

Well, I could not stand how the headlight and the passing lamps looked compared to the LED lights so I did some research and for the amount of cabbage I wanted to spend now I went with the Truck-Lite 7 Headlight and Passing Lamps....... $349.95 delivered to my house......

I hope I have gas money to put in the tank to ride in August when the snow melts.......

Good news is, I have the exhaust back on. Need to bleed the brakes and should be ready to fire her up. The positive thing for me is, I have no extra bolts left on the work bench! I must have put them all back on....LOL

i like the look of the bumpers, but will check out yours this summer. I ordered the amber LED for the fender light, and in your words, " it sticks out like a boner in sweat pants. "

I can can see buying the white LEDs and selling the Amber ones.... Sheesh

Well I took the bike out on a couple of shakedown runs today. Put about 40 miles down. I absolutely love the new apehangers. Unbelievable comfort! The stereo rocks, hand warmers were a great investment, and I loved the new color matched inner fairing!

I had it all wrapped up yesterday but it would not start. I was so frustrated last night and was in a cranky mood. Woke up this morning with a goal to fix the fucker and it turns out someone broke into my garage and wired the Twist Grip Sensor incorrectly. (Wasn't Me - Shaggy) :)

One other funny deal was when I returned home I told my wife my hands were freezing. At that point my son walks into the room and asks, "How are the hand warmers?" DOH! First ride I forgot I had them and so I just HAD to go back out and try them out. They work GREAT!

Thanks to Gasman for answering my million or so texts along the way during this winter project for me.

Looks great, Klimo. Just a quick question though, I think its an effect of the picture. Is your pin stripe a carbon fiber, or a twisted stripe? looks kinda wonky in the picture.

Pinstripe is a double line... I set my camera to "wonky" and then took the pic..... :)

I didn't know of the this "wonky" filter you speak of. Does it always take "wonky" pictures or is the effect random and therefore "wonky"?
