After a few months of no dog, after we lost our boy Brinks, we decided we wanted a new dog. We decided on a Rottweiler and found a great breeder in Gladwin. Rottweilers Royal (http://www.rottweilersroyal.com/) We went by their house and breeding facility and wow... they are lovers of the breed and have a serious passion for Rotts.

We had a deposit down on a 4th male in the next litter that is expected to be around turkey day. As part of the breeder/puppy contract they always want right to first refusal if you don't want your dog anymore for any reason. So a previous owner had done this because he was going back to school for his doctorate and being single meant the dog wouldn't get what he deserved. They bought the dog back and after a couple week assessment put him up for adoption.

He's 1.5 year old, fixed, all his shots done, and about 110#. His name is Ruger and these are the pics they posted.

We decided to help him out. That was the first name the wife wanted for our next dog... "a sign". We think that with our busy work schedules, skipping the uber cute puppy phase may help. He seem to be right on otherwise... we spoke to the breeder and they thought he'd be perfect for us.

We went up today and brought him home. He was perfect in the car for the 3 hour car ride home, and slept most of the ride.

Once in his new backyard, he was showing us how cute he is.

He's also all smilies, especially when he's playing fetch.

But being only 1.5, he's an Energizer Rotty

He's also obcessed with this green squeaky sphere.

But after a little big, a dim of the lights... the wife found a new cuddle buddy.

He's got a heck of a bark on him too. Shows his teeth when he barks with authority and true to his breed. There isn't anybody coming up against him. But with me, he needs to understand when playing goes too far... but this was a warning that his previous owner told.

I adopted a Rotty mix almost 10 years ago at the zoo. He was about 7 months old. Beautiful friendly pup. Got him home and found he was well trained in all the basic obedience commands. He has been a wonderful part of our family. He chose to be mamas dog because she had ACL repair and he kept her company on the couch and then walking for therapy. He is very protective of her. While out on a walk, someones dog off leash came running and he grabbed it by the throat and pinned it to the ground. No harm to the dog, but nice to see he is protective.

I also adopted a German Shepard several years ago at the zoo. He was 7 months old. Very nice dog when I met him. Soon after getting him home, I learned that he had never heard the word NO, or at least never understood it. He was a beautiful dog, but I had to give him up because I was the only one in the family that he gave the least amount of respect. My wife was afraid for my young son and his friends, not to mention anyone who came over. He was very protective. Loved that dog, but had to give him up.

Dog has to know who the "pack leader" is. Earning it back later is not easy.

I know you had a wonderful and gigantic dog before Chris. This advice/information is for the less experienced.

I don't mind hearing advice and may seek it out. I just don't like when people give advice to us like we don't know whats what. Brinks, Cane Corso, would have broke most people, he was insanely hard to raise... but with that gave the biggest reward. I still remember when he "got it", it was like a light switch... all at once it all just clicked into place and he was AWESEOME!! Makes me still miss him.

The biggest problem with Ruger, is he is 1.5 yr old... Sub 2 years old and they are still complete idiots. He may push that a bit further due to re-homing.

Right now besides establishing the pack leader and how he ranks with me & the wife...

We have found out, and will work on once above is dealt with, he has a trigger button of pain. We have been working on his hot spot he got during his transition from original owner... he will nip you if you try to spray it. So that will have to be dealt with or vet visits will be hard.

Dude great work - always adopt when you can. I got my pit-lab when he was 1.5 years old - best dog ever and like you said skip the potty training, chewing everything in site, etc. puppy phase.

Rotts are great dogs and great guard dogs just have to be aware of what they are and control them so they don't defend (attack) when you don't want them to and I am 100% confident knowing you and how you are and the dogs you have had that you know the drill. Everyone has their way of training. I could tell you mine but you already have yours and my way probably wouldn't work for you like it would for me. And it could be like brand of tires or oil or whatever debate.

I can say best training in the world can't overcome stupidity and natural instinct. 3 weeks ago I was sitting at home on the couch and my 4 year old fell asleep on me. Doorbell rings. It is just me, the 2 younger kids and my 16 year old daughter. So I call my daughter to get there door because I don't want to wake up the 4 year old. Call her again. Again. Again. No answer. WTF? Oh well whoever it is can call me or come back not that important not expecting anyone. ALL OF SUDDEN comes this blood curdling scream from the front door - DAD DAD DAD GET OVER HERE NOW DAD OH MY GOD DAD. I throw the sleeping kid off me so she starts screaming, I run to the door and the dog hears me coming and is tearing ass back into the house because he just figured out he fucked up and there is a solicitor laying in the middle of the road - all I could see was 1-800-I-SUE-BIG flashing before my eyes. So once the dog is back in the house I throw on my shoes and go out to the middle of the street to help the guy up who is obviously completely out of sorts. I say are you ok? Yeah I just tripped and the dog was just barking at me so I ran. Stupid ass 16 year old was outside and was walking into the house, saw the solicitor and saw the dog barking but still opened the door because she is too god damn lazy to walk 10 steps around to the garage door. I fucking lit her up for that shit - really? Are you that fucking stupid? Someone could have died today because you can't walk 10 steps to a door where the dog can't get out. I told her if the guy makes a report and they make me put the dog down she is going to be the one to pull the fucking trigger and watch the dog die. Fucking idiot.

So I got lucky on that one and maybe that guy can tell the soliciting mafia (who I have already thrown off my property and informed about my 2nd amendment right) not to come to my house. I fucking hate solicitors. Even worse than god damn telemarketers. I immediately put up a big no soliciting sign and beware of the dog. Next motherfucker that wants to sell me some bullshit I am calling the cops and charging them with trespassing.

At the breeders request, because she thinks we will do so good, I created a FB page for Ruger.

Last night this was him passed out on the couch.

Today he spent his first day in the kennel for about 6 hours... he did awesome. I came home to no whining, no barking, just a calm dog sitting up in his kennel. After potty break, we took a nap on the couch in the basement.

It's cold and wet outside so he soaked up some rays inside

Nice Chris!

Mud, I had a similar incident with my Shepherd. He went through a screen window after the solicitor. By the time I got outside the guy was in his car with the dog standing on the hood barking at him through the windshield. I called the dog and the guy drove away, lol.

I would guess a rotty is pretty intimidating for delivery people.

Finnegan is about 70 lbs and most of delivery people love him - it is mutual, especially the UPS guy who always has a dog treat for him.

He's been doing so great with his kennel time during the day while we are at work.

Plus we have been doing daily walks that he's really good at.

He's really blending in nicely. It's not to say we don't have work to do, but that is expected with a 1.5 year old aka teenager.

So last night he got a milk bone put inside his kong... kept him entertained at least a little while.

Saturday we took him over to Nasty Nate's for a doggy play date and to see how he did with the other dogs. He met Ace (50#pit), Jake (35# lab mix), and Oliver (75# golden). He was a bit skeptical at first but once the sniffing was completed everybody was pals. Then he was just playing constantly with Oliver.

He didn't like them right off the bat like he does people and children, but once he got use to it, he was good. A little humping and such but not bad. It's something that will have to be socialized into him.

Yesterday he got another ball, like a solid rubber

In the meantime, his feline sister got one of his balls, and smack him like a hooker when he tried to get it from her.

Today he was hanging with me in the garage working on the bike

We've been using this neck brace for a week or so now. It works alright. It limits but doesn't completely eliminate the ability. But with his leg spot, I think only the lamp shade will do that. On the good side, his leg spot is almost gone now.

He is like Johnny Cash but Ruger sleeps everywhere. Especially after 4 days in Tennessee and the car trip down and back.

Yeah he's a good dog, loves kids. Once he out grows this remaining puppy energy and that energy that he's so wound up he doesn't know what to do with himself.

For Christmas my mother got Ruger a candy cane shaped bone
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Ruger/IMG_5572_zpsda8d5b89.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Pets/Ruger/IMG_5572_zpsda8d5b89.jpg.html)

Ultra AL, got me a bottle of vodka, for which Ruger approved
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Pets/Ruger/IMG_5575_zps4366fb89.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Pets/Ruger/IMG_5575_zps4366fb89.jpg.html)

And this is from today, the dog loves water, to play in, be sprayed, and drink.
