Friday myself, Nasty Nate, Caveman, Bagger Dave, and Mad Dog set out to the U.P. on an epic adventure... the story line emulates that of Wild Hogs in many aspects but we are much cooler and walked the line between the good guys and the gang.

The rough layout of the trip shown here on a google map (https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Roche+Rd&daddr=43.3234904,-86.2388112+to:44.598439,-86.0992013+to:45.3003115,-85.286498+to:45.590256,-85.1013745+to:Saint+Ignace,+MI+to:Palms+Book+State +Park,+Thompson,+MI+to:46.0940236,-88.3993796+to:33303+Headquarters+RdOntonagon,+MI+4 9953+to:McLain+State+Park,+Michigan+203,+Hancock,+ MI+to:47.4454973,-88.2163547+to:Copper+Harbor,+MI+to:47.3052137,-88.0228464+to:Gay+Bar+%26+Grill,+925+Lake+St+Lake+ Linden,+MI,+49945+to:Pictured+Rocks,+Alger,+MI+to: Tahquamenon+Falls+State+Park,+Paradise,+MI+to:Roch e+Rd,+Brownstown+Charter+Township,+Wayne,+Michigan +48183&hl=en&sll=46.530524,-85.398102&sspn=0.494116,1.352692&geocode=FeByggIdMhQK-w%3BFWIQlQIdpRnc-iltBuTpQWIZiDHkIQJirfZB3w%3BFaeEqAId_zre-ilf3HMxh3IeiDFUug-onsynSw%3BFVc6swIdnqHq-inzK8mOn-5KTTFptctzfmNA5A%3BFfCmtwIdwnTt-ik1vifPwmZKTTHKphva3ZetrQ%3BFWnbuwIdty_z-inV8p5PGvY1TTEgQFswez5Ndg%3BFS0AvgIdaO_Z-iELZOCJIDdMSSlZHr3q-RlMTTELZOCJIDdMSQ%3BFcdWvwId7SG7-infN2fEut1TTTG4VMbkSpyvKA%3BFfzgyQIdwxOn-iHERNL1OheP8SmNitlBSzRWTTHERNL1OheP8Q%3BFdnE0AIdsv a3-iEcixETmuDc8ilZIKawfLFQTTEcixETmuDc8g%3BFfn10wId3u y9-im3afhDKXZaTTHNdzmXE80Y9g%3BFRdP1AIdcObC-inroCtEq4NaTTEMeUx9524Fyg%3BFf3R0QIdwuDA-inB0CNkl4dQTTFTY8XMAsYT9A%3BFWqg0AIdSbm--iEm4CNi8NPchSn_XAuuR45QTTEm4CNi8NPchQ%3BFSWCxwIdI7 Dc-ilDGwNwP85OTTFaYya8C5dBTg%3BFRE4xwId2drr-iG9hYVccqwFEyl3IV_ag7pJTTG9hYVccqwFEw%3BFYNxggIdnP kJ-ylf6c1eRj87iDG56pUFvKdaGg&oq=gay+ba&mra=mrv&via=1,2,3,4,7,10,12&t=m&z=7).

Mad Dog obviously did more being he rode in from NY. Dave did a few more probably due to his ride down from Port Urine...

I did a few over 1600 just as predicted.

Some short cliff notes...

I love camping off my bike
M22 & M26 are amazing roads, some of 41 isn't bad either.
I hit a deer at 65mph and had a hard crash
I then rode my gimped bike with my gimped body for the remaining of the trip & about 500 miles.
Other than my off Sunday afternoon, we had a great trip.
As I'm typing this Dreamy Don (Mad Dog) should be arriving home.

I have tons of pics and a more precise timeline to come... but it's late and I want to go to sleep in my own bed.

I have my pics downloaded off the camera and iphone, and uploaded to PB... just need to assemble and add here.

sucks about the deer, did you keep it? lol can't wait for some pic's

Gas Man
07-22-2013, 11:22 PM
I didn't keep it. Offered it to the tribe police we called but he didn't want it either...

No where for me to put it on my bike... and all the bikes were loaded up. Sucks but under the circumstances not much I could do about it.

Sucks man hope your not too banged up. Hows the bike?

Gas Man

I'm ok... nursing all kinds of soreness. Going to give it a couple of days and if not better will make a regular dr appt.

Complete new fairing will be needed, as well as braces inside I'm sure. It's completely cocked.
Front fender was demolished
front fork fender mounts broke off
headlight and both spots are destroyed
one of the front blinkers got imbedded in the deer
gas tank dented
tourpack & right side bag rashed
side bag gaurds mangled
drivers right floor board jacked up
engine crash bar bent
highway peg f'ed

It will be a hefty repair...

I have never seen another biker crash in person and I hope I never do (knocking on wood), let alone see a bike hit a deer. It was amazing and terrible all at once. It keeps replaying in my mind, too, very unnerving. Seeing Gas sliding to a stop and then seeing the bike, sparks flying, to a stop on wrong side of road was crazy. Then the five us sprang into action getting the bike assessed and back to rolling condition. When I asked a local to call the police for the report he said it sounded like a tire blow out, I figured it was either the deer impact or the impact of the bike on the ground. Gotta hand it to Gas though kept cool, and wanted get bike rolling so we could move on with trip. I can only hope I would have done the same.
The trip, however, was epic. Had a great time getting to know Mad Dog, and Chopper Dave better around the campfire with some liquid refreshment. You always seem to bond with people when you spend four days and 1600 miles with them. We got see some great roads (m-26) and a really craterous road(Brockway Mtn Drive). Great sites, and some serious woodtick individuals out there.
Cant wait to head out for another great ride.

It was definitely a trip to remember! when I got home yesterday evening...I did 1738 miles...I rode to Gas Man's Thursday morning....and hung out there the day before we left.
I was riding in the back and seen everything when Gas smoked that deer! I'm just glad it he was ok ...it could have been alot worse.
Glad everyone made it home safe....I unloaded my bike last night and pulled it in the garage....I have to work today...going to wash the bike and take off my tour pack and shit tomorrow on my day off... looking forward to more great rides!

Yup!!!!

First, Glad your OK GM!

We've had so many close calls, specially up there (so few up there, you'd think it'd NOT be the case)... it's just a matter of time. When you put the miles on, it's almost eminent. I know at least 3 we ride with that have hit deer in the last 2 years...

Looking forward to pics!

This was a seriously great trip! Everything came together to help Chris get through his deer ordeal with only minor bumps and scrapes. As others said it could have been much worse. It was great to hang with you guys and get to know you better. We did have some fun around the camp fires. 2400 miles in 5 days for me with 790 for my trip home yesterday. Last 2 hours kinda sucked with a light rain. Got home about midnight, sipped a little Gentleman Jack to unwind and hit the sack. You guys need to come to NY when time permits and I will show you around this state. Thanks for putting this trip together Chris!

Dude that totally sucks about the deer. Glad you are ok. Glad you had a good time otherwise. Saw the pics on fb. Looks like an epic journey.

Yeah... two things will come out of this going forward...

1. I'm looking at installing a electronic deer siren.
2. I may keep my HD out of the U.P.

Hawg... you're 100% right and this wasn't my first time either. Just get back on the (steel) horse and ride on.

I'm always surprised that I'm usually pretty cool and collected when the pressure is on. My only problem was I could sit still enough to concentrate on removing the front fender. My edenaline was just pumping too much, so I had to leave it to Nate and the guys. We really enjoyed hearing everybody's POV on the accident and we all got a good laugh about it after the fact.

My body felt pretty beat up this morning but seems to be coming around as the day goes on... been first aiding my little rash on my stomach near my belt, and gimping the wrist sprain along. If the wrist doesn't get better by thur/fri I'm going to go to my regular doc.

Called insurance and got that ball rolling today... we'll see if Progressive does everything they say they will. I am still trying to get the police report, but it doesn't seem like the insurance cares as long as there is deer fur on the bike, which there is.

Today got away from me with my biz travel to Pitt... I'll post the pics tomrorrow, sorry gents...

Been there myself once or twice..... actually twice! Deer whistles work..... At least for me. Did several years in northern Wi. on the south shore of lake Superior.
Deer herds up there in those days were plentiful. Never hit a deer. All the locals had them on their cages and bikes. Just regular stick on deer whistles they came in a package of two. Use them both. Their will be nay sayers But like I said did several years up there and never even had a close call.

I will be looking at those deer whistles also. Like Caveman I never saw anyone go down and it was some scary shit. Emotions went from WTF to just hoping Chris made it through to getting tears in my eyes when I saw him up and walking. This all took place in just a couple of seconds. We all know the risks when we saddle up but when the breeze starts and the smiles begin it somehow makes it an acceptable risk. Ride safe everyone.

I'm looking at Kury #4042 and wiring #4044

And trust me, I had many emotions during all of it. I'm glad I was with 4 great friends!!!

Don said the same thing "And no freaking gopro!"

3pm'ish, wearing all my gear. Helmet had no scratches. My HD rain coat got shredded and my HD armor mesh jacket got F'ed up. My gloves caught some concrete too. Telling you guys... wear some gear!!!

I must also give credit to my fobus holster for my glock. It took a beating and saved my gun and my right hip!!

Took this to prove to Nate that it was HIS metric bike who's speedo was off. He kept saying we were going about 5mph faster than I said we were. I don't think his argument will hold up against GPS

We went to Big Spring right off Indian Lake and saw the spring water and fish. I didn't take any pics because I was just here late last season.

We pushed on and made our way over to Lake in the Clouds.

At this point we continued out of the penn and across 41 when the deer incident occurred...

Here's a quick story on the deer incident...

On Sunday afternoon about 3pm on a 55 mph country road that are plenty in the UP, I had a full size doe jump out in front of my bike about 10-15 yards out and I'm doing about 60mph. I have 4 bikes following me, including Don on my right side just behind my rear tire (staggered form). Had he been next to me, we could have had a double crash. I have great reflexes for looking for deer and was on the brakes hard on my Harley with ABS. Within that second, I realized I was going to impact the deer, I ducted behind the windshield and fairing in hopes that if it came over the top it wouldn’t hit my head. The impact at ~55mph was so violent from the force of the deer's momentum that it whipped the handlebar to the left, spraining my left wrist slightly and sending me and the bike down the road separately with harsh impact. I now find myself sliding down the concrete road at over 50mph wondering how long I will be doing so, while watching my bike do the same all the way to the ditch. I made it over 1 lane (the oncoming traffic lane). I notice when I stop, that I don't feel too bad and only have slight pains, so I got up and start walking towards my bike, while my friends are parking theirs and start yelling to check on me. "I'm fine I'm fine!" I shout back. We lift the bike up and then start to asses my health. I have a small road rash on my left calf (just above my tall boots), one on my stomach near my belly button, both about the size of a business card. My left wrist is hurting a bit, but no other injury. We are amazed!!! My helmet (not required in Michigan anymore) never touched the ground, not a scratch. My HD mesh jackets with armor and rain coat (using it for warmth this day) are SHREDDED! The armored jacket did its job and saved my skin!! After checking over the bike we realized we needed to remove the mangled front fender and bend the crash bar away from the rear brake pedal. Then we took the bike for a couple short rides checking its ride quality. The bike survived which is more than we could say for the deer, which died on impact.

Things considered:

No matter how good your reflexes or how alert you are, you simply can't avoid all deer collisions.
Time of the day or year only has some impact to your chances of a deer collision.
WEAR YOUR PROTECTIVE GEAR!! My armored HD jacket saved my hide and that is why I wore it! My gloves took a bit of road rash but that kept my hands in good condition. While my helmet didn't impact the ground it sure could have! Some of my friends weren't wearing theirs most of the weekend because we weren't on the interstate. They wore it from there out. No helmet is a choice, along with t-shirts instead of jackets, shorts instead of pants, tennis shoes instead of boots; but it may not be the correct choice!
Don’t be complacent with wildlife.

Here's the attacker, that died on impact and we believe she landed here, because my fairing acted as a deer pusher (think cow pusher on a train) and launched her 6-7' into the air.

I still had my rain coat on from the mornings cold and it was shredded

RIght arm wasn't too bad but the armor definately saved me. I had NO scratches on my right arm. But that may also had to do with my holster.

My left arm of this jacket took a beating. I can stick my hand through this, it really isn't shown well in this picture. I ended up with a spot on my elbow about the size of the end of a #2 pencil eraser, THAT IS IT for that arm for road rash!

After removing the front fender, we test rode the bike and it seemed fine. So I got back on that steel horse and RODE!! As riding down the road the mixes of emotions was all over the place. I didn't know if I was just happy to be alive, wanted to laugh at the craziness, blown away at how awesome my bike is and held up, or cry at the scenerio. Damn it's great to be alive!!!

Man that bike is ugly! So is your gear. Good thing is was a bit chilly. It would be tough to keep a happy face after that experience. BUT......... you lived to ride another day. Congrats!

We pushed on that day about another 2 hours to make Pictured Rocks near Munsing. I didn't get a pic of camp that night, but I'll pull the "I just hit a deer card" on that one.

In the morning we opted for just walking to the pictured rocks from land vs. the 2.5 hour boat tour.

Yes sir, both almost as ugly I am without any deer damage to my face! Good thing I didn't get hit in the face!! YIKES!!

I kept my cool man... I'm proud of that. I'm also proud that I rode right away. It's easy to say you would, but it's different when you're tested. Whether or not it was pride, ego, or sheer determination; I rode that steel horse home. That makes me :D

They won't. I carry $12k in assc coverage so 75% of the value + $12k is what it would take to total it.
And thanks... the U.P. is amazing and the real gem to michigan.

Al, that's what I'm saying. Guys, I'm telling ya, my mesh jacket is cooler than a t-shirt because it keeps the sun off ya. Add in the evaporation pads and its line a/c. With the armor in you're protected.

Plus the helmet. I don't ever want to have to pick up your brains. Just saying.

Just consider it, but I'll ride with ya regardless.

You NEVER can. We lost our dear friend 2 years ago on his skoot, and I wish we'd of took more pics in his short 32 years... we still don't take as many, and sometimes NONE... The wife and I are so focused on our ride and the fun times, we rarely stop for a photo op. Every year we say were going to do a better job at it... and we never do.

Jealous of the memories you capture... you can only hang on to them from memories for so long.
