Due to my job change and then getting a company car, we switched around the household cars. Here's that story...

Traded in the wife's Fiesta and my Volvo and leased her a new Fusion Titanium all loaded up.

At the dealer

With my company rental car (till my real car becomes available)

Had the windows tinted lightly (20 rear 50 front) on Fusion

Of course I did stuff to it... like rip the front bumper off to HID out the projection headlights and fogs

Also LED out the white lights outside the car, like the front markers, reverse, and plate lights

Dull

So that left me with the company car, that I can't drive any non-work people in, I can't take it for anything non-work related, with the exception of stopping on my way home. But can't be "going home" from Detroit and get in an accident in Novi. So I need a 2nd car for the gaps when the wife is still at work and such.

Want a cheap beater $4k-$5k... was thinking old Jeep (97-04) time frame... it would be a convertible (which is fun), 4x4 for winter, and cheap/easy to work on. Couldn't find one like I wanted... looked at a few on craiglist but for some reason this summer they want too much for their condition. Then I had 2 "I can't F'in believe these morons!" in one day back to back..

Drove to St. Claire Shores for a 4.0 liter 5 speed TJ... got there and beyond it's roughness... open the hood and it's a 4 CYLINDER NOT A 4 LITER! JACKASS! Drive to another in Belleville and it's BEAT DOWN... but we open the hood and HOLY FUCK... same problem!! is this the new jeep scam? Hope you won't notice? Ass munkey!

Then a friend of mine puts a 1991 Mustang LX 5.0 for sale on Facebook for his boss (the car owner). 32,XXX original miles, 3 year old Earl Shibe paint job (to go over the dull non-clear coated original), NO I mean NO rust anywhere, great clean interior, cherry engine bay... Owner originally had it listed at $5500 (where it should be for the miles), but my buddy said $4500. I offered $4000 and we settled on $4250 and they'd deliever it. I bought it...

It's not perfect... speedo resistor spring behind the guage is broke so the speedo is useless bouncing. The odometer still works perfectly that's why we believe it's not the cable. The convertibles are known for their bad common grounds so we hope that will fix the next set of issues.

Gas & temp gauge are INOP
passenger door window button INOP
passenger door lock button INOP (unlock works)
power mirrors only go down

It could be the ground, or switches or ???

going to take it to an electrical shop to get checked out. It needs a set of front tires so I'm going today after work to get a set of almost new (used) tires put on for $100.

But otherwise I'm excited about both cars. The fusion is super super nice, with it's ecoboost 4, upgraded wheels, titanium tail lights & exhaust, touch screen navigation... we love it.

The mustang is going to be my "beater" as it's not used for going to work or much else other than running over to someones house (when not on the bike) or when the wife and I want to enjoy the drop top.

What ya think guys? I do alright?

I don't think so... don't plan on driving it too overly much. Not needing it to get to work helps.

Thanks....

For me, I have a list of TLC items... I'm fixing some things and adding more things as I go. Maybe working on this will keep me from tinkering with the wife's fusion more.

Today: Fixed the center high mount brake light, recharged the A/C (cold for now, we will see for how long), fixed the rear view mirror falling off, and replaced the worn out wipers. But as I said, I'm adding things to the list too. Getting 2 new front tires tomorrow.

Chris didn't you say you leased the fusion? why are you putting parts on a lease car?

But looks like you did alright. Are you going to drive the mustang in middle of january in a blizzard? Get you a $500 beater for winter and you should be all set.

Gas Man

Funny horror. You're about the 4 person to reference that. I'm ok with the cool

Mud. Yes I will drive it a bit in winter. If I have to. Remember it's only if the wife isn't home with the fusion. This is my "beater".

Yes leasing the fusion. I have a grand total of $100 in parts. They are parts that I just can't do without.

first thing the 5.0 needs is frame ties.

Gas Man
07-18-2013, 12:54 AM
Yeah I doubt I'll do any big HP gain mods. I think the first go fast mod I'd make would be a re-gear of the rear end. I think the convertibles are geared way low. On the highway at speed, I'm only turning 1500 RPM.

On a side note. First 100 miles in. Did about 14mpg. Is that good?

TopShelf Scott

I have a extra set of frame ties Chris if you want them..14 is decent..biggest downfall for seat of the pants

HID you can't live without? Makes sense - NOT! Why not throw some fushia fucking LEDs under that fusion - definitely a mod you can't live without.

My wife and I lease the GMC Terrain Denali and the only thing we did to it was drive it. To each their own, I just have a hard time putting any money in a car I'm renting. I think window tint would be about the only thing I'd spend cash on for it. The 5.0 is a pretty nice " beater " though. How's she sound???

Gas Man
07-18-2013, 08:49 PM
She sounds ok, got some grunt tone but not so much that it drones... I think the first performence mod will be a new gear set in the rear end... I found out it could have as low as a 2.79 to a 3.08 in it... a nice 3.73 would wake it up.

But got some new rubber on it today. Bought a set of Capital Sports (generic/private label generals) to match what was already on the rears. Had the old rears rebalanced and put on the front, and the new rubber on the back. Also put all new lug nuts on it to get rid of the mix match junk on it.

I agree but it is Chris so he doesn't get off the hook, ever for any reason at all. NEVER.

I leased a 2006 Mazda Speed6. Took it in for an oil change and they said "we recommend full synthetic" and I said "I recommend you shut the fuck up, put the economy oil in and hurry the fuck up. I didn't ask for your recommendation motherfucker." They were lucky I was even changing the oil on that motherfucker. Had to put 4 new tires on because the cocksuckers at mazda put summer tires on and they lasted all of 11,000 miles. Leased so I didn't have to put a penny into the fucking car - so much for that. 06 was not a good quality year for the speed6 grand touring edition. Had all kinds of issues. Ran like a motherfucker but dash display would go out all the time, cheap ass fucking clutch pedal cover kept falling off until I fucking liquid nailed that bitch, trunk had major fucking leaks in it, 4 recalls in 1 year including 2 that were related to massive power loss (something AFU in the cpu). Also don't park on a hill and expect the rear fascia not to rip off when you descend the hill. Good thing I didn't run out of duct tape or liquid nails.

And Chris - STOP IT. No parts on a lease car. Don't wash it. Don't clean it. Don't even look at it unless you are driving it. Motherfucker I thought I raised you better. And an automatic in a Mustang? Come on now. That is a cardinal sin.

Based on fundage and availablilty of fundage I am thinking November timeframe. I know the guy with the parts just need money. Guess he has a full ohlins front and rear set up. He is a 4 time WERA champ - used to instruct for Apex 2 Apex. Does instruction for mid-ohio. Really cool guy. Rode with him at Grattan. He is on another softball team on Fridays - saw him a million times and he looked familiar. Friday I wore my Yamaha hat. He says what bike do you have? I said R1 - he said me too. I said you ever take it to the track? He says yeah I won 4 championships, lol. This all transpired after he hit a single and was on first base - I was playing first, lol. Done deal. Just need to work out the pesky details.

The speedo doesn't work (odo does) so instead of buying a used one for $170++ and chancing the same problem later. I called around a bunch of places to get mine fixed. So I pulled the gauges. While in for that, they are going to double check the dead gas & temp before I buy new sending units for those.

Also installed a new serp belt, put the not too old one in the trunk in case of emergencies.

Big thanks to Nasty Nate & Caveman for lending me a hand doing the water pump job.

Also, here's a pic of the front 3.5" speakers installed. Ended up pulling them back out and installing the, provided, bass blocker.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Vechicles/1991%20Mustang%20LX/D1385527-8FFA-4406-99E0-FF22AFA62052-1250-00000195949E52C8_zpsc003b57d.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Vechicles/1991%20Mustang%20LX/D1385527-8FFA-4406-99E0-FF22AFA62052-1250-00000195949E52C8_zpsc003b57d.jpg.html)

Now the stereo sounds real nice.

Then I installed the new ford window & unlock switches in the pass door. Now that works!!
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Vechicles/1991%20Mustang%20LX/66F9E90D-7DD9-41CC-AA6A-E2CF63D7AC5E-1250-000001958E7D62C9_zpscae1e10d.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Vechicles/1991%20Mustang%20LX/66F9E90D-7DD9-41CC-AA6A-E2CF63D7AC5E-1250-000001958E7D62C9_zpscae1e10d.jpg.html)

Also put in the new ford power mirror switch and now they work too.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Vechicles/1991%20Mustang%20LX/623BE4B7-030A-40F9-B9B3-738AEE1800CA-1250-0000019588296CA3_zps490a94dd.jpg (http://s99.photobucket.com/user/cjclark69/media/Vechicles/1991%20Mustang%20LX/623BE4B7-030A-40F9-B9B3-738AEE1800CA-1250-0000019588296CA3_zps490a94dd.jpg.html)

I figure the switches probably got wet and corroded. Oh well, all better.

Hopefully get the new fan setup installed this week, then I can burp the coolant system. Also, hope the electrical shop gets the clock spring in this week so I can get the cruise and horn to work. Also, should be getting the dash cluster back from the speedo repair this week. I also ordered with the fan, a engine temp sending unit, so I will get that put in as well. Busy busy...

I got the speedo back from Specmo (http://www.specmo.com/). For $200 they fixed a broken speedo frame, tested all the other gauges, found the voltage regulator in the cluster was bad causing the gas gauge to not work (important part was it wasn't the sending unit in the tank).

Well during the last big snow we got a few weeks ago we quickly found out that the stock tires on the Fusion ABSOLUTELY BLOW in the snow. Look it up on the internet and everybody says the same thing.

The 235/40/19 for good snow tires cost about $275 each. F that!

So I had the good idea of downsizing and was going to just do a steel rim. The titanium comes with 18's but we had upgraded to the 19" rims. The SE models come with 17s, so I priced out 17" tires that would adapt for the smaller rim to be the same overall size. 225/55/17 Those are only $125 per snow tire. A steel rim was $70 but I got a nice alum rim for $95 each. So right there I save $200. Then to swap just tires is $60 each time $60 * twice a year is $120. BUT rim swapping is free because it's wrote as a tire rotation which is free courtesy task.

So we ordered these rims

They came in today and we dropped the car off for hook up. The added side wall should also help in the snow.

They look GREAT for a winter rim!

What kind of warranty you get on the rims? I had some similar rims on my old 08 Silverado and within a year the clear coat was peeling off and the rims starting looking like shit. I took em back to the tire shop and put in another order of replacement rims free of charge of course. Granted I took em back before a year was up. Just a heads up, keep an eye on that.

Yeah they have whatever the manufacture is.... I got them at Belle and know a few people there so I'm not worried. Further, they are only winter rims.

I dig those rims. Very sweet looking and definitely makes the car look even better than it already does.

Yeah I can't even imagine what the rims would look like if they were 19 or 20's.
