View Full Version : Progressive Harley Touring Link Chassis Stabalizer

Well after doing my rear shocks to Progressive 940's (http://www.twowheelmichigan.com/showthread.php?3873-Progressive-940-rear-shocks) (now new ones are 944), it showcased the downfalls of the front HD suspension. SO I upgrade that this past winter to Progressive Nitrogen Monotube kit (http://www.twowheelmichigan.com/showthread.php?4815-Progressive-Monotube-Fork-Kit-Nitrogen-power!!). This then showcased the HD frame/motor mount downfalls. The rubber mounted motor doesn't have a lateral support mount in the rear of the trans area. When the rear tire hits a bump while in a high speed corner (being the swing-arm is mounted thru the trans case) , it shoves the swing-arm at a 45* angle and the backside of the motor/trans will get pushed sideways, giving the bike the rear end "wag" or shake.

What it needs is something keeping the rear of the motor/trans from lateral side-to-side movement. There are other options out there, like true-track ($400+). However, TT doesn't work with my center stand. So onto Progressive... might as well stick with the same brand...

What it consists of is a trans pan mount, a frame mount, and a connecting heim joint.

And on the inside there is a notice that it won't work with the stock exhaust header (which I still have).. WTH! I call Progessive, as the notice said, and they said if it doesn't work with my stock header they will send a different mount free of charge and I can keep both!! Ok so this sucks but at least they are standing behind it.

Here's where the frame mount bolts, and you can see the issue, the 2:1 is too close to the frame

While waiting for the updated part, I decided to tear the bike apart and mock it up. So I mounted the trans pan mount and the heim joint.

Today the updated frame mount came and you can see the difference...

So I bolt it up, even though the mounting spot has moved, the heim fit right into place.

I re-hang the exhaust and you can see the small clearances. I love how mechanical it looks!

On a side note... I've upgraded the brakes by going full floating rotors with the already upgraded Brembo ABS brakes. Now I have done suspension and chassis upgrades. Next is this coming "mod season" will be more power!!!

AMAZING!!

It worked awesome!! Took out 90% of the wag. But even at that I was pushing it!! I think I was doin 95mph on a curved highway exit. Even around town speeds the bike just seems so planted!! I love it!

Real hard core test will be a longer highway ride, through Detroit on I-75. There are some bumpy and nice corners...

Thats great I will look into it. I agree completely after installing my 944s I need to to do the tubes as well. Progressives customer support is great they were very accommodating when I called them.

VERY NICE to know GM!

Never had that problem... been thru tons of curves with a few trips down the the Dragons tail and the Appalachians, thru the Georgia hills, etc. And we lay er down, like you, I dragged my floor boards all the time... maybe its the weight difference's between our skoots... I really expected the problem with the 21" on the front, but I actually think it handles better...

Chain, there isn't any weight difference right now to speak of. I'm in Street Glide form... there also isn't a noticable wag at canyon carving speeds. It's the highway wag that is more noticable. I like high speed highway cornering so I needed to do this. And at only $168 on amazon, it's a great upgrade!

Medic... it's not much to do it... if the exhaust is in the way, that is the hardest part in R&R that.

Got ya! I understand that. Although when we were on the Blue Ridge parkway we reached 80 on some of the long curves, and I never noticed much, but now that you say that, there was slight "swag", not much, but I get what your talking now.... hmmmm.... I may do that now.

DAMN YOU And your upgrades... ;) NO! 170 isn't shit for something like that!

Yeah but as I said... in my only 20 mile commute. It did seem to help firm up the chassis. More miles will tell more, but chassis & suspension is never a bad place to spend money, regardless that it's one of the most forgotten mods to bikes, ESPECIALLY in the cruiser world.

I've never had the problem either, 85+ on windy long sweepers, no issues. The 09-up frames are supposed to be much better, but I dont doubt these stabilizers improve it further.

Is that touching the frame?

It's mounted to the frame.

Remember, I have the same frame as yours. They are much better than the previous models but the back end of the trans has NO lateral bracing... that is the problem.

I only got the issue sometimes but I would...

It looks like there's a part where it would rub against the frame. Looks to me like its mounted to the stabilizer on the side of the bike and to the oil pan

There is a piece that goes to the side of the frame behind the passenger peg, a connecting rod, then a small "L" bracket to the bottom of the trans pan. You simply remove the trans pan bolts, put the bracket there, and use the longer provided bolts...

Right, does that piece that goes around the downtube part of the frame actually touch it?

I guess I'd just need to look at it on your bike

The connecting rod does not touch. Just the side plate that is bolted.

they say a picture is worth a thousand words, thats why Gas always posts a million +1 pics of his mods. If you look at that bracket you take the bolt hole covers out from the side of the frame and BOLT IT TO THE FRAME.
