Finally making some progress on my Shovelhead project. Pulled the motor, primary, trans, oil tank... Even though the motor was completely rebuilt only 1200 miles ago it was done 6 years ago and hadn't been ridden in 4. Looks like whoever put the bike back together never re-torqued anything and it leaked pretty bad. Thus the reason for pulling everything out. I probably scraped several pounds of oily-mud off the underside. I tore the motor apart, cleaned it all and replaced most of the gaskets. Cleaned the trans, didn't tear it apart because I don't think it was leaking, just covered in goop. Installed a new kickstarter because it didn't have one stock. Stripped the black chipped up paint off the inner primary, back to raw aluminum. Cleaned the frame. Next is to clean up the wiring, it needs it badly.

Still not 100% sure of the direction I want to go with the bike. I've done several bobbers starting with a variety of bikes so I think I could do something pretty cool with this as a start. But I'm torn on maybe keeping it close to original seeing as I have all the parts to do it. I like my bikes to be head-turners and I'm afraid keeping it stock probably wouldn't accomplish that. What do you guys think?

Here's the starting pic

The motor apart - I pulled the jugs also, just didn't get a pic of that.

So completely awesome. I think the bikes of that era look terrific as they are - only exception is the wheels, which if you are in to correctness, then I guess you cant change them.

Looks like its really in tremendous shape

I'm with Kosher on this...

I think keep the bike realitively stock but maybe just update the wheels and brakes. That would be a enough to make it a head turner...

Yeah, you think they could have made that rear caliper any bigger.

Yeah HD has done some dumb ass shit in years past... but I guess same could be said about most manufactures.

Wouldnt chop that up. Too complete and too nice.

I would look at that before another chopped down, peanut tanked, no fendered creation.

Well I didn't plan on taking it this far but as the parts came off it became inevitable. Striped bare and repainted to a satin black, along with the swingarm and a few more parts in the near future. Going to put on new front forks, new style dual calipers on the front, new style rear caliper and all new rotors. Still trying to figure out the final design, just trying to get all the mechanicals inline first.

Nice scooter, I love Shovels, don't care what model, I love 'em all. My first big HD was a 79' FXE bought it for myself brand new as a divorce present bought it with 5 10 and 20 dollar bills I'd been secretly saveing I still have the key.

It's starting to look like a bike again. Still have got lots to do but at least it's going back together now.

I have mostly little bits and pieces. I have some Nacelles, a dog bone cover and a few other bits. I get stuff sometimes to use as trading stock. Not sure all what Scott and Mike have, but it was a lot more than me. they have been selling stuff off.
