Last year, Trip, did a group Iron Butt in the Tenn area. I thought that would be a cool way to make it fun. Plus having a group would help keep it interesting and keep everybody alert. Well that and lots of energy drink.

Anyway, I have always wanted to do a "America's High 5" loop.

Here's the google plotted idea

(http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=48183&daddr=Benton+Harbor,+MI+to:44.20938,-86.30474+to:Traverse+City,+MI+to:45.29153,-85.30162+to:45.61989,-85.07656+to:St.+Ignace,+MI+to:Rogers+City,+MI+to:B lack+River,+MI+to:Bay+City,+MI+to:Sebewaing,+MI+to :44.02024,-82.80843+to:48183&hl=en&ll=44.559163,-84.407959&spn=5.878387,9.832764&sll=45.537618,-84.971008&sspn=0.361195,0.614548&geocode=Fb3uggId_gUK-ynTMcikwjg7iDGoyDRof2xNug%3BFWKmggIdU9DY-inXXt2rbsYQiDGQCNha1-xyAQ%3BFeSUogIdHBjb-ilt20DV8igciDGWfLIR_dBGiQ%3BFbEHqwIdaIjl-indKdrXsjIeiDEhVnQ_P9y_Rw%3BFQoYswIdjGbq-inH1270uu5KTTF0OSVs_EkEoA%3BFbIauAIdsNXt-iknoVP_b2ZKTTEuvJ25lp7VIw%3BFVDmuwId7Cfz-inV8p5PGvY1TTEgQFswez5Ndg%3BFVoTtQIdpggB-yn5ns90BfU0TTFFp7-5CKKpDw%3BFUbbqwIdW-QI-ymRfLZwO0szTTHNeOZvEKo6Ug%3BFeQymQIdH_X_-iklbUC-BOEjiDECOK7yJ6LQNA%3BFQ9NmwIdQKMG-ynB8an-lK8miDEgi4G4wz2kBA%3BFRCynwIdknEQ-ynlU6xEqlAmiDEtB_tpUz6qUQ%3BFb3uggId_gUK-ynTMcikwjg7iDGoyDRof2xNug&t=h&mra=dpe&mrsp=5&sz=11&via=2,4,5,11&z=7)It's just over 1k miles and 18.75 hours. Build in long breaks and it's a real long day.

I was thinking of doing this Sat/Sun, Sep 29-30.

The weather should be great for leathers.

I will have to put in the planning to ensure we make it official. For example, here's the rules (http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/getdocument.cfm?DocID=1)

Witness Forms to be filled out.
(http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/ss1000.pdf)Application Form to be filled out.

This would require a good running bike. Perferably something that can run 150+ miles on a tank of gas. But we can deal either way.
A credit/debit card for gas stops
Well rested rider.
Each rider would be responsible to complete his own forms.
$35-$45+ for SaddleSore fees for application
Who's in??

Only thing I'd do different is after Traverse City I'd go up 31, and up thru the Tunnel of Trees... I know everyone's done that route.... but... it's always a great ride...

I will be in Tennessee that weekend on a riding trip with Will and Redline. My bike is not optimum for this kind of riding anyways. I'd have to cut off my legs at the end of this ride.

Oh trust me I thought about it. But I need to check as to what time of the day it will be. If it's night I would prefer to avoid. If it's evening near sunset I'll have to re-route. I had done and re done and redone the route a bunch of times... you'd be surprised what it does when you're paying close attention to miles.

Yeah not so much I guess. But people have done it on worse bikes.

What about guys with smaller gas tanks. I know Dave from FB wants to roll and his tank is tops 100 miles. (sportster peanut tank). How do you guys think that will effect the overall? It's only an extra 3 stops...

RedneckMedic
07-27-2012, 10:37 AM
I won't mind more stops on a ride like this especially towards the end. No one says you have to jam out the 250 from our tanks the whole trip.

I hear ya... but I was thinking the 5 gal guys would do 150 miles...

Ok so no worries then...

With the new route..

It's 10 hours/538 miles to St Ignace. That puts us there about 8pm. Extended stop for food... Being the half way point and turn to night.

++4.5 hours/240 miles get's us to Bay City

Add long stops for gas, and food...
Probably St. Ignace abt 2100 (9pm)
Bay City abt 0100

There's 5 more hours of riding after Bay City, rolling back to start about 6-7am

I'd like to aim for 22-23 hours for completition. Give us an hour to spare. Would suck to miss it by 30mins.

07-27-2012, 10:55 AM
Well, this looks promising.... I am off that weekend, right after the training week. Ok, so, will there be a stop every 100 mi for the peanut tank? or could we redda gas him and extend his reach a bit? If we do have those stops more often they will have to be quick ones so we don't fall off the schedule too much. What time of morning are you lookin to leave the house for? Who will be our "Witness" We gonna use the wifey's or Roger at the Citgo? He could be a little unreliable. and why both days if its only 19 hours?
BLAM Shotgun blast of questions :lmao:

Gas Man
07-27-2012, 11:03 AM
Awesome... if you're in we're set. I always need my most reliable co-capt/road mate. <meant in most non-ghey way possible>

The peanut tank... by the time we redda gas can it, we could just jump off, top off, and jet. Say do an every other gas stop being longer.

Don't get off bike gas stop
get off bike, eat/drink gas stop
don't get off bike gas stop
I was thinking 9am leave. We need people to be well rested to start. Like don't go out friday night and party. Sleep a bunch.

For witness, we could use a wifey. Roger works afternoon shift so he won't help. I had the same initial idea and same concerns. Rules state we can use a spouse so no worries.

The time frame if we leave at 9am is obviously, we have to be done by 9am the next day (Sunday). It's a hair over 19 hours in straight drive time. Factor in gas stops, eat, drink, piss, etc... Like I said, I'd like to get in under the wire, like 22-23 hours.

Gas Man
07-27-2012, 11:04 AM
Also, it should be noted... EVERYBODY needs to get gas with a credit/debit card at the start & end of the ride. PERIOD. Those two stops are crutial and both need to be time stamped and witnessed.

Interesting idea/discussion here.

What are we going to do in case of a break down?

We can't abort the trip for everybody for a break down or tire flat.

I would also like some "on-call" roadside helpers. Your brother/brother-in-law/dad/etc standing by with a truck/trailer??

Ok, we need figure this out...

junkyardjon
08-31-2012, 07:14 AM
only problem i have is no speedo=no mileage. 1000 miles is not that bad.. i cleared 800 miles in 10 hours before with stopping for gas and smoking a sig everytime lol. then i had to explain i was on my way home from N.C.

RedneckMedic
08-31-2012, 10:24 AM
I could make sure I have my truck Ready to go with a full tank of gas and possibly see if the girl friends dad will loan me the enclosed trailer to be on stand by. I just don't think I could have anyone on standby to use it.

Gas Man
08-31-2012, 01:06 PM
Well the equipment ready is one thing, but it has to be used. LOL

I have AAA, that might work for me.

I am thinking of putting my father in law on standby. He lives near gaylord/manelona area.

junkyardjon

IF, big IF, i don't go, i'll be on stand by with a trailer.

I was talking with some of the core group for this ride.

This is NOT a rain or shine event. If it rains, it's postponed till Spring. Only other thing is, IF south is not rain forecasted. We may change direction.

Reasons:
It's going to be cold regardless, rain will make it much worse.
The rain will slow us down.
It increases danger level.

Comments?

Watching the weather....

If you are planning on this you need to do a few things...

1. Prepare your bike
2. Get your cold weather gear ready
3. Print your required papers.
4. Confirm your intention to attend.

RedneckMedic
09-24-2012, 08:34 AM
This is my confirmation. Im going. Just need to pick up some cheap chaps so i stay warm

Gas Man
09-24-2012, 09:15 AM
I sure hope its not as cold as this morning.

Riding in the cold around town or on shorter trips is one thing. Being up for 18hrsand counting with 750miles under ya and in cold temps is another!!

RedneckMedic
09-24-2012, 09:54 AM
Well have to keep an eye on the weather

Gas Man
09-24-2012, 09:11 PM
Yeah... I'm concerned about low temps after many hours of riding...

40* around town is one thing.
but what about after 500 miles...

Gas Man

I hear ya Moe. I just didn't expect the temp drop to be this severe so early. I mean come on, I started my furnace in September. WTF!!!

Got a couple more wavy people on the plans...

Trying to decide if it's worth it for a 45*-55* long cold ride.....

RedneckMedic
09-25-2012, 07:03 PM
today was nice but cloudy did some riding but its going to be damn cold again at night. we need an indian summer

Gas Man
09-25-2012, 07:44 PM
Yeah but indian summer won't help with night time riding below 50* after you already have 600 miles on your belt for the day.

I just didn't plan on Oct weather in Sep. I wanted it to be cooler than Aug, but this is taking it a bit far. And now with people leaving and waving on participation it's on par with all my other trips in 2012.

Gas Man
09-26-2012, 09:41 AM
I think I'm going to just stick a fork in it.

couple people bailed and a couple people waving on partcipation... sprinkle in some people not having gear for this type of riding.... add in this abnormally cold Sep weather.

Post pone it till like June when we're happy about cooler night temps.

The 2012 curse (at least for me).

RedneckMedic
09-26-2012, 02:45 PM
Ya I planned on going until I found out I have to be at work at 930 for the lions game. I was even out looking for some cheap chaps for the weekend. I don't think its been too cold lately.
