So far theres a group of 4 of us. Were goin to head dead west to lake Michigan on I think a Wednesday evening. From there the plan is to ride the coast all the way around and hope to get into the U.P. for a bit as well. So far the only for sure thing planned is the tunnel of trees. We would like to stay in cabins rather than hotels and hope there not to overly priced. Where ever we are on Sunday morning we will take whatever route is necessary to get home by the evening. Right now it looks like mid august. Date not set in stone just yet. Does anyone have any suggestions or must see stops along the way?? Thanks!

Yes, keep me posted on when. I live 25 miles from Cross Village. What are you looking for? Some people want the cherry roads with sweepers and little population and others want to sight see. Sight seeing I'm not real good at. Here is a ride I planned with some friends next week. The first post has links to the maps we designed. Check them out. If you read along the thread you'll see many of the places of interest with links. http://www.m109riders.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146986
A (http://www.m109riders.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146986)nyone that wants to join in is welcome to.

The tentative dates as of now are Aug 15th-19th. Were not really looking for activities or really even sightseeing. Im thinking we got alotta riding to do, but wanna stop and check out any must sees or stellar eats along the way. Tips for roads would be appreciated, and if anyone knows of good motorcycle friendly lodging along the way, please let me know. Again the Plan is to stay as close to lake shore riding as possible. If anyone is interested in riding as well lemme know.

So eat at legs in and then from what I hear there is cabins basically below legs in on the lake that are fairly cheap for the night. So you guys could ride up there get dinner then have chef show you some local rodes to finish off the night and retire back to the cabins. Then the next day roll on up to the UP. Thats what I would do personally.

*Sleeping Bear Dunes
*Northport, Leelenau State Park Lighthouse
*Mission Point Lighthouse
*ride 88 from Eastport to Mancelona
*ride 66 from Mancelona to Charlevoix (shop?)
*ride 31 around to 119 then head through the tunnel
*Legs Inn
119 North of Legs Inn sucks, sand, broken asphalt and more sand. If you're heading for Mackinac I prefer taking Levering rd. It's a straight road but it'll get you to Mackinac quicker and it isn't debris covered.

Thanks for the tips. It's much appreciated. We haven't planned our route just yet, so I'll make sure to hit up these roads. iv been told that riding down the east side of the state sucks compared to the west side. I guess we shall see. Again thanks..

Gas, I woulda liked to join ya guys, but vaca time is a major factor. The trip I'm goin on in mid august is with my dad, bro in law, and a few friends. We been talking about this for a lil while now. Pitching a tent ain't very appealing to me, when you do a trip with cabins or hotels I'll take a harder look at it. You fellas have a fun and safe trip though.. I'll be looking forward to the pics.

No tents... I hear ya.

I don't do all tent trips, but I really enjoy them, and told myself I would do a few more this year.

I still havent planned trips yet for fall time (my fav time of the year to ride) but those won't be tent trips.

The west side is the best....M-22 is the one of the best routes in lower MI.

When you get to Mackinac you can ride the lake shore all the way out to Wilderness State Park, it's a nice ride. There is a lighthouse out there and also a spot where they allow no light pollution. You wouldn't believe how the sky looks from that place. A friend of mine had a nice little mom and pop motel on Lake Huron that was fairly cheap. We just stayed there on our group trip. She sold it that very day to a church group that's going to make it a retreat. I would have sent you there for a deal but I can't now. We sat on the lake and had a bon fore until 1am and just shot the chit. 10 motorcyclists shooting the chit with cold beer and a bon fire, what a night that was.

As Gas said come with us.... no tents? or is it a space issue? if so, I have a trailer that will haul a lot of stuff. As for recommendations Legs Inn for food Pictured rock for a quick stop for sights route 2 in the UP.

I work way to hard to be miserable while sleeping. I'll pony up a few bucks any day to sleep in a decent bed. Trip starts tomorrow after work. Should have decent weather, main attractions will be m-22, with a stop in charlevoix at a cabin. Then tunnel of trees, then lunch at leggs in. Then on to the U.P. to pictured rocks with another cabin stay, then heading to Mio to my uncles cabin. Got a group of 5 of us. Should be a good one.. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

Best smoked whitefish and perogies around and top it off with a very chilly polish beer or two and enjoy the outside patio over looking Lake Michigan

If you're in the area for lunch/dinner check out Whitney's of Carlevoix (http://whitneysofcharlevoix.com/). I ate there on my lake michigan loop and it was great.

Trip was pretty bad ass. I'll post pics and a little more detail later. It went 1483 miles in just over 4 days. Everyone made it safely home and a good time was had by all. Vote for the best road is definitely highway 58 in the U.P. Almost 40 miles long and a shit ton of switch back turns along the way. Brand new blacktop also. It kicks the shit outta the tunnel in my opinion...

Gas Man

The tunnel isn't really that much...

ChefC14
08-27-2012, 03:15 PM
The tunnel is a nice 45mph road and you have to go slower to see the scenery. You have to include the Legs Inn experience and it's a good time. It's much better in the fall. You definitely can't compare it to the 75mph curves of H58. 58 has EVERYTHING a motorcyclist could ever want. I'm looking forward to your write up and pics. There are many roads around the tunnel that I enjoy much more but I live here so I know the secrets.
