Well, every day, really but specifically in Pontiac and Waterford. I know none of yall ride drunk, but dont give em reasons to bust ya for other stuff.

A new drunken driving enforcement effort in Pontiac and Waterford kicks off today .

It's a joint effort through the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Waterford Township and the Traffic Improvement Association of Michigan.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, Waterford Police Chief Dan McCaw and TIA’s Jim Santilli will announce the details of the enforcement effort at 1 p.m. in a news event at the Sheriff's Office.

"This type of enforcement has been tried in other states," said Eileen Weisse-McIsaac of TIA of Michigan. "This is the first time we've brought it to Oakland County."

Today's enforcement effort will be along M-59 in Waterford.

There will be construction-grade changeable message signs alerting drivers of the enforcement zone and officers will be wearing high-reflective vests, Weisse-McIsaac said.

Pontiac and Waterford were picked for the initial enforcement effort because the agencies are connected and share the same roads, she said.

The goal is to expand the effort to other communities as money becomes available.

According to TIA, Waterford has had 386 alcohol-related crashes in the past five years resulting in 10 deaths and 228 injuries. Pontiac has had 294 alcohol-related crashes resulting in 13 deaths and 173 injuries.

In the enforcement zones, officers can only pull someone over if they view another violation occurring. Then they'll investigate to see whether alcohol was involved.

"This is not a checkpoint," Weisse-McIsaac said. "Michigan doesn't allow that."

They have done this before on 59. They don't stop everyone, they merge everyone into one lane and slow traffic to 5 mph so they came get a good look at everyone as they go by.....yea, not a checkpoint technically....

If you want to know a few things and see this type of thing in action... search youtube for checkpoints... find some interesting stuff.
