I wanted a waterproof, semi-permanent setup, that doesnt look horrible when the GPS is not on the bike.

I think I did ok, thoughts? These are waterproof cables/connections from http://www.3brpowersports.com/. There is an aux port under the seat that it connects to, simple to just plug in.

First, I bought a GPS mount that works with the cradle supplied by Garmin, here's the mount on my bike, first part of the setup with just the handle bar mount on, pic is a bit blurry tho.

Ran the cable under the console:

That looks good. Have you tried it on the road? Does it stay in place?

I'm going to try to get out today, if my 12 year old daughter stops having screaming tantrums.

The biggest worry is the sun washing out the display, its not back lit.

Well, I got about 75 miles on it today, its awesome!

I was worried about it washing out - but it was very easy to see and I doubt its possible for it to be sunnier.

I was in Romeo, and I set it to avoid highways and avoid unpaved roads and set my destination as Clarkston - a great ride!

The nice thing about the Nuvi 550 is that it is waterproof, and you can get one from $235-$250, vs $799 for the Zumo.

June 14-17 up north, neighbor has a place in Boyne Falls, its an annual trip for us. This year another buddy is joining us. We're probably headed up to Tahquamenon Falls. Always up for a meet up!

July 8-12 I have to be in Toronto on business, then the following week I have to be in Atlanta, also on business, so I'll head down Sunday the 15th, and get to Knoxville, then ride through the Smokeys the following day on down to Atlanta, and I'll return probably on Friday the 20th. I'll be stopping in Cleveland on Saturday on my way back because my cousins are throwing a 90th birthday party for my Aunt, who likely wont recognize any of us, sad.

And then in August I'm headed off to Sturgis, not sure of the exact dates but we want to get there a couple days before it starts. Dates are flexible because I'm staying/camping at a farm about 20 miles out, the guy that owns it is a friend of a guy from work I'll be riding with.

All in all a fun packed summer!

I may have to go that route, if you don't mind can you give me the cable part number you got and while I'm asking is there a good place for a deal on the Garmin?

OK, here we go:

Nuvi: http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-nuvi-550.html. Thats where I got mine, best price I could find. It comes with a cradle that snaps onto the device and has a ball mount on the back of it.

I bought this mount which fits the ball mount on the back of that bracket: http://motomount.net/garminnuvi.htm

And from http://www.3brpowersports.com/, you want part number 150-0052-01, which is the TAPP-HD cable that taps into the aux power port under the seat ($39.95). Scroll down on this page, find the part number and add to cart. http://www.3brpowersports.com/products_TAPP.htm

And part number 202-0040-09 which is the 9" mini-USB cable that plugs into it. Find the part number on this page and add to cart: http://www.3brpowersports.com/products_usb_cables.htm. You'll notice there's a 9, 12 and 18" version, 202-0040-09 is the 9" which I have, but depending on where you mount yours, you might want a longer version.

Update - a riding buddy pointed out that instead of mounting the cable on the tank, I could mount it on the neck for a much more hidden look.

Hmmm. So I got out my wifes blow drier, plucked it off and yanked it out to the neck. Much better, I think. I'll need a longer USB cable, so thats on order.

Got all the parts and pieces delivered today. Installation was a snap. I opted for the 18" USB cord and it's a good thing I did. I don't have much to spare. Thanks again for the info. My opinion is this is the best looking mount and the best bang for your buck on the gps.

So glad it worked out for you. Yeah, with the connector on the neck, you definitely need an 18. 18" sounds long, but it really isnt. Mine arrived today, but I ordered the wrong one, his web site is confusing. He acknowledges that and is sending me the right one with a shipping label so I dont have to pay for return shipping. Stand up dude!

That's a company I'm glad to business with, that's cool they didn't tell ya too bad... I wasn't able to mount to connector on the neck, it was in the way when i turned the wheel, I actually had to mount on my fork. Which worked out a little better for me being the 18" cord was way tight on the neck, now with it on the fork I have an inch or so to spare.

It does interfere a *tiny* bit on mine when all the way to the right, but I think its very minor.
