I was 19, Summer of 1978. I was stationed at 29 Palms Ca with orders to go to Okinawa in the early fall. I had just purchased a brand new maroon Yamaha XS 650 Special, (god I loved that bike) and had to get it home here in Michigan at some point so, I'll just ride it:pat:. Well I met another Marine friend that had purchased the black one on the floor next to mine, he was from Cleveland and it just worked out that he took leave the same time as me. So like Capt America and Billy we took off through the desert with no gear other then helmets, I mean no gloves no rain gear, just duffle bags bunjee straped to our bikes, it was great. It took a little over three days of slab (cause we didn't know any better) to get home, with two hotel stops....one at an old hotel in Colorado (3 story, bathroom first floor, shower 2nd floor and TV room 3rd floor:lmao:) right next to the Colorado river, $7 a night, the other at some Holiday Inn in Mo I think. We did stop in Vegas before the first night but if I remember right we didn't even step foot in a casino. Matter of fact I think I left with maybe a hundred bucks in my pocket and I think I spent $40 in gas for the whole trip.
The other vivid memory of that trip was crossing over the Rockies. Even though it was July, it gets cold at 13000 ft:hss:.
I remember pulling over because my fingers were to numb to twist the throttle. I dug out some Marine Corp issue olive drab wool socks, ahhhhh mittens, not perfect but it worked. The last night was spent in Indiana on a picnic table at a gas station, we were beat and could of slept anywhere.
I would not even attempt a cross country trip now on a bike with no wind protection but back then it was the only way to go.

Went on a 600 mile booty call. I was so eager, I left in the evening instead of waiting until morning. Froze solid and had to stop halfway there. She was nice enough to drive up that night and meet me. Made the trip home in one day and other than buzzing for a couple hours after I got off the bike ( Honda CB450 buzzed pretty good on the highway), nice trip.

My first long haul on my 06 Big Dog K-9(not counting riding to Full Throttle in Lansing and back:lol:) was riding to Gas Man's in Aug of 08...which is around 84 miles from my house...riding to Big House's crib in Canton...to a bike/car show were we entered our bikes...to the Scoreboard....then to De-toilet...trying to make the Custom Chopper Show....riding about 2 and a half hours or so in a down pour! hail...wind...my 300mm back tire was kicking up around a 10' rooster tail in the rainredflip....back another 45 min in another down pour back to Gas Man's crib...5 hours for both of us cleaning our choppers... the following Sunday at Gas Man's... doing some wrenching and waterproofing and oil changes and other things to my scoot(did this all day sunday) then left Gas Mans around 6:45pm...back to my crib around 8:15pm or so...that was probably about a 500 mile trip for me!:rockwoot:
One of the best quote's that day was Chris and myself were sitting at a stop light looking at each other while it was raining so hard we could barely see...and he said "Isn't this fucking fun!" I was like fuck yeah! glad I was with you in this shit than by myself!:lmao: great memories!

1985.... my friend Chip and I decide to take off headed for Pittsburgh PA from Wyandotte on a Shadow 500. We rode 2 up, yup 2 guys riding all the way there and back. ( get that out of your head, it's not like that).
Neither of us had Any experience riding but we just kept switching up, i'd drive then he'd drive. We wen't out there to meet some high school friends of ours that were in their second year of college.
So our plans were to stay in there Dorm for 4 days then head back, well...we ended up staying in the Dorm for only 2 days since we had no idea that the guy we were staying with was headed home for the weekend.
Anyway.....we had almost 200 bucks between the both of us when we left wyandotte and spent alot of it the first two days. We decided to stay the other 2 days checking out Pittsburgh, eating whatever cheap food we could buy, slept on park benches for 2 nights and showered at the YMCA. Free Bench and If I remember right it was a buck to shower!
Made it home with a few bucks in our pockets. That was a great time......we still laugh about it to this day. That was the first and last time I rode two up with a Guy!!

I guess last summer with my grandpa http://www.twowheelmichigan.com/showthread.php?2523-Northern-MI-Trip-(lots-o-pics). Ive done a bunch of day trips where I put about 300 miles on the bike but never went anywhere except a big circle and stopped at a few bars (these are some of my favorite though).

Not sure if this qualifies, but back in 2001 I bought a used Suzuki Katana that I rode then sold when my son was born. That was back in 2007. Then in July of 2011 I went and bought me a brand spanking new, off the showroom floor Streetglide from Techumse HD. Mind you I hadn't rode a bike since 2007 and it was a sport bike at that. Never had ridden a Harley, and now I own one. Hmmm, damn I gotta get this thing home now.... I don't think iv ever been as nervous as I was leaving that dealer by myself pulling out onto M-50. I remember thinking to myself..... Well I got $20,000 between my legs right now, just don't fuck it up!!! I ended up doing about 280 miles that day. But that was a feeling I'll prolly never forget. But basically, I never really went anywhere, I guess I was just taking the long way home...

I hear ya DB... I remember pulling out out my brand new big dog chopper. I had never ridden anything but sportbikes and never even thought I would ever own a raked out chopper. It was early march and way cold. That 20 min ride home was amazing, cold, scary, and learned a bunch.

Like I said before, and on topic... my first long haul (non-trailer) was back in 2009 when Caveman (then on his Honda Shadow) rode down to visit Trip in Tenn, then to the GAP and other parts. I had been to the GAP many years prior but never rode down there.

It was a fun and learning process. I would have never guessed that I would be such a milage hound that I try to be now. I live for my road trips, the other miles I pick up between road trips are just... meh... Going to bike night, and riding occasionally to work and such... are just miles to get to something I want to do or see people. While I need those miles to keep my sanity and clear my head, the miles I love the most are my road trips.

I sure hope most of you can join me on the upcoming trips I have planned for this summer.

My first trip out of Mich was in 2010. I spent probably 2-3 days figuring out how to carry what I needed on my Dyna, I had bungee cords going every which a way, but finally came up with a pretty good system.
Barely slept the night before I left I was so excited, kind of like a kid on xmas eve! In the morning I headed to South Dakota (Sturgis), first nite in Iowa (hotel), next nite Mitchell S.D.(KOA). Rolled into Sturgis and a sea of people by 11:00, rode thru Deadwood, Mt Rushmore, CrazyHorse saw some of the sights in town and after 2 days I had seen enough. After Sturgis I headed up to see Devils Tower in Wy, then down to Rawlins, Wy for the nite ( KOA). Next morning into Colorado, thru Rabbit Ear Pass then down into Denver. After 2 days in Denver I headed out across Kansas, ended up in a small county CG in Washington, Ks I was the only one there, perfect. The next day I had planned on stopping for the nite around Williamsburg,Ia which is just east of DesMoines, problem was I got there at 2:30 in the afternoon, no way I was stopping that early. So I started thinking that if I kept on rollin I could make it home by 12:30, and sleep in my own bed (No Brainer) Rolled in my driveway at 12:45, with 799 mi on the odometer, I was beat but the next day was already thinking about next years trip. Road trips, you gotta love um!!!

My first trip was on my first cycle back in 2001 on my 96 Yamaha Virago 535. Nice little started bike with farily low miles and some good pep to be a first time rider. The wife who moved to Texas from Mexico when she was 15 wanted to go see her parents like we often did on 4 day weekends. I was stationed at Ft Hood, Tx right in the middle of our second largest state, and her parents lived in Odessa, Tx about 4.5 hours and 350 miles away. While her and my daughter were rollin in my Dodge Dakota with any gear. I wasn't sure about riding that far as I was still a true newbie rider, so I loaded up a ramp I had made from 3 2x6 and a ramparts pieces, just in case I got tired or whatever. Again, I must note that I had never been on a long ride before in my life and was just starting out this motorcycle adventure thing. I had no windscreen on the Yammy either so I felt it all the breeze, the sun, the bugs, and oh yeah the rocks..... A truck was a little agitated with my 70mph speed limit so they flew past at about 95 and kicked up a stone the blasted me straight in the chest. HOLY CRAP did that hurt. Felt like I had been shot. I slowed down and the wife came up on my left and was looking at as if to say, "what happened?" I waved her off and took off, explained to her later at a gas station what happened, and she started laughing. Thanks a lot, babe!!!
So, we pulled into her folks place that evening around 8pm and I was actually pretty buzzed about the ride. The MIL wasn't too happy that I was taking her baby on that deathtrap though she knew she had to tolerate it. The FiL thought it was pretty cool, but didn't say much, he never really does.
The ride home on Monday morning was very uneventful and pulled up to the house around noon and cleaned up both the truck and the cycle. Wasn't a very long trip but it was a trip none the less. I was hooked.
After that the no more long rides till I rolled out with Gas to the Gap on the Shadow Sabre. That was an awesome trip. Was the first time I had gone on a trip that involved staying out at some ones house that I didn't even know. Trip and his wife were very accomodating and I was very thankful for a great time they helped us have.

We're going to do a 2 week trip, looks like next year, thru Sturgis, and on to Yellow Stone, and off to the Grand Canyon and home thru the southern way. Me and the wife solo more than likely.

If you stayed in the bar all week, you'd go broke!!!! hahaha!

We always put close to 300 miles a day while out there... we may spend one night in town, and that's enough for me by at least 1/2 a day! ;)

We DO drink a shit load of beer, but everyone of us are veterans to that, and if your ass isn't up and around when we head out at 7, your solo for the day. I remember a few times in 05 when I crawled in bed at 5 and was up and out by 7.... long day...

Them rides are my favorite! when we do 3 to 4 hundy in a day. NOT too long, and not short. least you feel you accomplished what you set out to do, RIDE!

I bough a used GL500 Silverwing from Sun Cycle and Joined the Wolverine Riders who were chartered thru Rider Magazine who used to sponsor Motorcycle rallies with demo rides and the usual vendors and such. We started out on Memorial day weekend that just happended to be one of the coldest ever with frost the night before, I showed up for the ride with my hunting thermal underwear on underneath and I was glad. We were riding to Pigeon Forge,TN for the rally and it did not get over 60 degrees until we reached Bowling Green, KY that morning. I heard sounds coming from my Silverwing I never heard before riding through the mountains of Tenesse and Kentucky and we all blew our horns going through the tunnels between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg and the scenic views at the pulloffs and roadside parks were awesome as was the company of my fellow riders. After the rally it rained most of the way home but we had a great time overall. Guessing at the year probably 1991 or 1992.
