Ok Gents... setting up this big event/ride.

This is a camping trip.

Here's the map plan for going there and back. (http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Woodhaven,+MI&daddr=44.29968,-86.21879+to:Petoskey,+MI+to:Copper+Harbor,+MI+to:M cLain+State+Park,+Michigan+203,+Hancock,+MI+to:Woo dhaven,+MI&hl=en&ll=43.866218,-85.737305&spn=4.126343,10.821533&sll=43.965145,-85.545044&sspn=2.059839,5.410767&geocode=FTL9ggIdhdUJ-ynB89Q3ozg7iDF18K0CxjfCgQ%3BFaD1owId2mfc-inNWDenrIEeiDHhL76sTDyVew%3BFZ9XtAIdPq_v-impjI_XhINKTTEB1Mv2j7Ynzw%3BFRdP1AIdcObC-inroCtEq4NaTTEMeUx9524Fyg%3BFfrC0AIdaPu3-iEcixETmuDc8g%3BFTL9ggIdhdUJ-ynB89Q3ozg7iDF18K0CxjfCgQ&oq=Woodha&mra=ls&via=1&t=m&z=7)

We will take 2 days to ride up taking the west side of the mit. I think we will stop in Petosky or so for the night. Originally thinking St. Ignace for first night but I don't want to push guys... we can see how it goes. Or if somebody has more input here, we can work that out before hand or while on the road. I've done camping trips before and it's not a big deal to roll in without a resv.

So we leave Thursday Aug 2nd... get up there Friday evening...

Caveman wants to stay at McLain State Park (http://www.michigandnr.com/parksandtrails/details.aspx?id=423&type=SPRK). Good or bad??? My only concern is that it's a state park so it has Alcohol Restrictions. Also we definitely want showers and beach access preferred.

Then Sat & Sun we will go to Porcupine Mts, Lake in the clouds, and maybe run over to Wisconsin. This is also open for input... Short jaunts and back to camp.

We'll head south Monday the 6th and just hammer down the highway to get home. This is also shown in the map link above. It's a 10hour/600 mile hammer home (for me).

Some other logistics...

I was going to bring some MRE's for camp fire eating. These aren't cheap crappy MREs but some nice ones. I've done camp fire cooking but it's a bunch of work if you bring the food with you... ice & ice & more ice then all the pans, etc...

I think Caveman will bring his trailer for once... this might help anybody that can't handle bringing their own gear, being we will need to be bringing tents, sleeping bags, etc... I know I can handle all my own gear but I'm sure others can't say the same.

Who's in?

Well, the state park seems to offer the best place for round trip and ammenities. I looked on the DNR's page for Mclain and the alcohol restriction is as follows; "
Alcohol Restrictions
Alcohol may not be possessed nor consumed within the park on the day in the month of September proclaimed by the offical organizing body and commonly referred to as "K-Day" (Keweenaw Day)."

So, we will be allowed to drink within our campsite as long as we aren't getting out of hand obviously with any kind of tent camping style event. I don't plan on getting sauced and would rather just imbibe a couple each night to take the edge off from the days ride.

I will bring the trailer if we need it. Moe, you are more than welcome to throw some gear in there if you need to. Would be great to have you present for the trip. The more the merrier I always say. And as said in preps for the Port Dover trip I have an 8 man tent and a two man tent, so there is plenty of space to be had. Since I will be bringing the trailer, Gas, we can bring a nice cooler with some grub in it and we didn't have that bad of a time with the food we took on the Lake Mich trip. So, with more cargo space its still do-able for campfire cookin.
The route looks good and will put us in good position to get some really great roads under our wheels. With Mclain as a base of operations we could even go so far south as Iron Mountain in just a couple hours time.
So, we need to get some more buy in on this. Moe, c'mon, bro. You can DO EEET!!! Don, would love to have you meet up with us. You could even take a similar route to the south and come up the night before and we could roll out en mase. Sprink, does one foot in mean your in or you got some planning to do before committing?
I have lots of time off in that little area and could even make the trip a little longer. That would be awesome.

Gas Man
04-27-2012, 04:48 AM
Ok on the ahchol bases. It was just a concern. Good investigating Sean!!

I do have a sweet 5 day cooler that would probably fit in the trailer. Plus with the trailer the 8 man tent fits easy. 8 man tent being more like a 4-6 man tent. LOL.

I have a pic of that beast setup ...

Tennessee in June (10 days), Sturgis in August (8 days), and Frontsight Academy in October (7 days)... And that is the end of my vacation days.... :(

Gives me the heebie jeebies, but I do it anyway. Been over a few times. Last summer, went over the weekend before July 4. Going into the UP it was rainy, windy and in the forties. White knuckled, but construction had us mostly on the paved side.

Couple days later on the way back it was very sunny and clear but windy as hell, it was the back side of a low that swept past. I was going along leaning against the wind, then I'd pass some packed up construction equipment on the side and in a split second - no wind! Then the instant I passed the equipment I nearly got blown off the bike. That happened in multiple spots, it was not fun. That combined with me not being terribly comfortable with heights and my 14" apes causing me to have the aerodynamics of a parachute, it was interesting to say the least.

Calling around camp sites for Fri-Sun night in the copper harbor area... Spoke to Mad Dog and we made the call.

Sunset Bay, which is on Lake Superior. Doesn't get much better than that.
http://www.sunset-bay.com/index.html

$25 a night

Not sure about how many tents are allowed on a site. I saw pics of 2 tents, so that would be my tent (with me & sean) and Mad Dog's tent. Probably can fit another tent or so, if they allow. The camp sites look plenty big. I am waiting on a call back to ask more questions about how many tents and such.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Riding/CopperHarbor2012/sunsetbaycampground.jpg
We are in tent site #6 (max cap 6 people). According to their online booking #1 & #2 are still available for our 3 nights.

Final details are in/on the GPS plotting and general idea of what/where/when we are doing while up there and getting there.

Yep... I might know a few things about that leak... it's no longer leaking, and is being taken care of with a unified command system. I don't think it will be down for long. They usually aren't.

But it shouldn't bother us riding. He's allowing the truck drivers to drive on Michigan roads longer per day. Kinda releasing them from their DOT limits.

Here's the thing... I got more info on the pipeline...

It was a seem split in a site nearby a new construction zone, possible too much heavy equipment driving over the land. The pipeline section (about 100 yards) was replaced within 5 days.

So WHY? Why do we need this emergency action? To see if we can flip a tanker off the side of the Mighty Mac? I know the area has heavy allocations and 5 days of pipeline down time. However, this seems like a monday morning quarter back move.

Oh well....

THIS GROUP RIDE IS CANCELLED.

Due to persons changing and cancellations. This was suppose to be a group ride and I was doing my best to drum up participation, which as you can see from the past couple weeks has not been there. Well the final straw backed out so I'm cancelling the group trip.

Beyond the iron butt, this was probably the last open invite heavy group trip I'll ever plan. I've put 8+hrs into this trip planning and it's completely backfired in my face.

I'll plan small around town/day trips, group rides around here. But these big trips will be left soley to my personal invite and then the trip will be catered to those individuals I'm inviting. Or maybe just maybe, I'll get invited on somebody else's trip that they put the leg work into.

Try to have a good day gents. Lord knows I'm not.

Well bummer, so much for asking about when we were meeting up & were. Oh well, I guess I'll just pack and go rolling. Which page had the info on that camp ground?

I'll see if I can pull getting next week off, but I'm positive my boss will strangle me then say no. How were you planning on splitting the ride out there?

That would be killer but I have different ideas for my sturgis ride. I want to do sturgis not during bike week. See all the same sights. Then cruise through during bike week for the day and then just keep headin west. But to do either requires more time off than I have right now.

I would prefer to get it done in 2 days, but I'm headed to Chicago (Palatine, really) tomorrow, hooking up with some folks from hdforums, Friday morning we head to Mankato, MN, then Saturday we leave for Sturgis. I'm staying in Blackhawk. I'll reverse the trip starting on the 9th.
