View Full Version : Michigan Cable Guardrail System

So I have noticed these cable guard rail systems popping up all over the place. Apparently the state thinks they're the best thing since sliced bread, they have been on parts of I-275, I-94, and I-75 for quite sometime now and I recently noticed new ones being installed along North and South 23 on my way up to school. According to M-DOT's website they have spent 40 million of our tax payer dollars on this stuff, installing it along 280 miles of major road way since 2008 claiming it will save lives and prevent injures. I don't know about you guys, but this stuff scares the sh*t out of me when I am on my motorcycle or in a small car. I have seen it just about cut cars and small suv's in half. What are your thoughts on it? Does anyone know of any actions being taken to stop the state from putting more of this crap up? I think it would be significantly safer if it was in the center of the median instead of so being close to the road.

In case you don't know what I am talking about here is more information and pictures:

I bet it works great for mini-vans and SUVs, the target audiance. I doubt they had murdercycles in mind at all......

I 200% agree with you guys. I think it could cut us in half if we got pushed into it.

Aye, they're supposedly great shit, but I don't like that they allow deflection into the other lanes where there isn't a nice wide median. These things are instant mangling with a very high likelihood of death for anything not enclosed if I'm remembering reports from the early adopter states, correctly.

I think they are being short sighted here... the only thing they do well is to keep southbound traffic off northbound traffic. You can't cross over the median. Which has happened.

I avoid using the left lane now as much as possible. I hate riding next to that stuff.

Wow I could become 3 of me. I sometimes imagine someone going down on the Mackinac Bridge with no gear. They'd be sliding along the grate like it was a cheese grater shooting pieces of skin into the lake for the fish to munch on.

No, I think it's called a sense of humor. If you knew someone it happened to or saw it happen you wouldn't laugh. About a month ago in Traverse City a guy was driving slowly and holding up traffic. Another person that was irritated passed him then got caught at the next light. The slow driver got up to the light and rear ended him. The passer got out with a bat and attacked the slow guys car. I have dreamed of doing this many times. I call it baseball bat therapy. I'll be driving behind someone and they'll be driving me insane and I'll say to the kids that this person needs baseball bat therapy. I say it joking and I would never do it. I think it's crazy that the guy in Traverse City did it. I find no humor in it at all but if I saw it on a tv show or a movie I'd laugh my ass off. Sense of humor and imagination vs reality, that's what happens to us when we start getting older. Now you can laugh at the cheese grater analogy without feeling guilty.

I hear ya chef... it's the difference between what is funny and what is reality.

What i picture with both the guard rail and the bridge is a cartoon of like wiley coyote getting split in 3 or being squashed into perfect cubes and falling to the lake. hahaha

Those guard rails have to be the dumbest frickkin things I've ever seen!! Now instead of getting stuck in the snow you'll either rip the front end off your car or better yet get flung back out into traffic. What a waste of tax dollars.

They are dangerous to bikers and small cars, When I was younger I read how a boy scout saved some bikers life after the cable cut off his leg, when I was in the military a memo was sent telling us to avoid roads with cable guard rails for that same reason. apparently the state of Michigan never got the memo, LOL, actually I thought they were banned as I haven't seen them since the early 90's, maybe they redesigned them IDK.
