Well you guys were right... I can't go through a mod season without doing something.

I'm already planning on doing some heat wrap on the pipes because the ceramic isn't holding up to the milage and weather I ride in. So I already purchased some wrap. Going to wrap the pipes, then put the high temp powdered heat shields over the wrap.

Yesterday while at the dealership I bought a few things...

The first thing I bought I planned on..
The HD air compressor (http://www.twowheelmichigan.com/showthread.php?2802-HD-Compact-Air-Pump-Compressor)

But then started looking at the heated grips, and the heated vests. The vests are nice, $195 and super light weight. They come with cords to plug into the bike (no t-stat $60) and to charge a battery (not included $75). That was a bit pricey.

The heated grips were only $170, but require a few extras (~$20) due to my fly-by-wire throttle.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/Earlyxmas002.jpg

The install doesn't look too bad being it gets its power from the cig lighter.

Waiting on those few extras and my new foam grab on grip covers. Will get it installed in the coming weeks.

G, explain more about why the ceramic did not hold up. I know you ride your bike in all conditions so I assume the weather has some effect. Mine has held up very well.

Dave, I think you should have scott send you some samples. Put by your bike and go from there.

Bill, I'm not too sure. But it didn't hold up on mine or Caveman's (we ride the same ways). Perhaps its the high heat of the harleys. I don't know honestly. But I think wrapping them will be better anyway.

Note that Gerbings makes the HD gear and they offer lifetime warranty, not so with the Harley brand. I love my jacket liner and heated gloves

All HD electric heated gear has a lifetime warranty on all electronics.

Don't they cost more from harley?

Gas Man
12-12-2011, 11:18 AM
Well they have a vest but it don't seem to be the same, this is their cord only 12v

http://gerbing.com/Products/Liners/heatedVestLiner.php

Their vest is $139 vs the HD $195 (dual source)

Their 7v battery powered vest

http://coreheat.net/Products/Heated%20Softshell%20Vest.html

$169 vs HD $195 (dual source)

Being that it's same warranty, yet the HD does both (with optional purchases). I would just get the hd. IF you feel like blowing $270 (vest plus battery)

well I got the full jacket liner, glover, dual thermostat control, and coax plug with controller holder from Gerbing for $370.00 and even with the Harley 20% discount it would have cost me $450.00. But either way we are warm and I have no regrets

Gas Man
12-12-2011, 08:23 PM
Yeah I haven't got the heated vest. So you are warmer. I just didn't want to spend that coin yet on the gear. Maybe before I get the bike out. Spread it out.

Well the other day I pulled the exhaust off the Ultra... in prep of the wrapping...

So I decided to wrap them today...

Here's the DEI wrap.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/1329441392.jpg

Soaked the wrap in some water
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/1329417940.jpg

I did some research and was told to wrap from the back of the bike forward, so that there is no leading edge at the wind. So I started in the farthest point... the cross over to the collector.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/1329417945.jpg

Test fit the heat shield
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/1329417943.jpg

Did the rear cylinder pipe
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/1329417946.jpg

Wrapped my way forward, through the collector, to the front pipe. I ran about 1.5" short of the O2 sensor, but that will have to do.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/1329438035.jpg

It isn't perfect but I'm not concerned about looks, this is for functionality. I didn't spend lots of time to work around mounts and such. This should cool down the exhaust for me while riding.

Test fitted the rear pipe heat shield...
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/1329438031.jpg

I'll be good. Plus with these heat shields it's more clamps holding the tape down.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/1329438033.jpg

Now I have to wait for the wrap to dry, so I can spray it all down with the high temp silicone spray paint. You can also see that I ended up putting worm gear hose clamps over their stupid straps. I kinda expected this because I know Al Hall has said those stainless "zip ties" suck and they do!!
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/1329438036.jpg

Stay tuned...

The small stainless zip ties havent caused me any problems. I just pulled em tight with pliers and I was good to go. I remeber first time I wrapped pipes I did it in my lap and the black dye from the wrap really messed those pants up haha

Gas Man
02-21-2012, 06:10 PM
I did it at that work bench and let it all drip on the floor. I had a buddy hold the pipes while I wrapped. But yeah it was messy.

I got them all painted and half way installed on the bike.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/1329669850.jpg

Just to find out that one of my mounts wont fit around the pipe anymore. So I have to make another one... ugg... it's always somin.

Chris, how long would you expect the wrap to last?

Gas Man
02-22-2012, 02:57 AM
I expect it to last long enough. Remember, I'm putting my heat shields back over the pipes.

Finally, after weeks and weeks of no days off, I got out in the garage today.

Got the garage, the shed, the yard all set up for summer. Can't believe we are talking like this in mid march.

Went to change the tourpack latch catch...

This pin comes down (left is pin, right is the lock)
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/IMG_0384.jpg

and they made a new plastic piece to replace this one, that is grooved for the pin.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/IMG_0386.jpg

When I went to remove the small screws, this happened. The bolt snapped (right side)
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/IMG_0387.jpg

Guess the excuse to get the heavy duty latches..

Onward to the exhaust cross over mount. Old one that doesn't fit the wrapped pipes on the left. The new one on the right. I didn't use the hinge design, I went with a bolt together style.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/IMG_0390.jpg

Installed and yes it's that tight of a fit. Made hammering it into form very difficult.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/IMG_0392.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra Classic/Mods/2011 Mod Season/IMG_0393.jpg

After that I hung the mufflers and got everything put back together. Going to start it up and record the smoking from the wrap.

Here's the video of them smoking in..

Here's the stock latch setup.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0386.jpg

So I went up to Biker Bob's yesterday, they had 17% off on March 17th... get it...

bought the HD Prem Latches and Hinges in black.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0395.jpg

I also bought the heated vest & battery I've been eye balling since last year.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0394.jpg

The latches didn't seem that much different... BUT the hinges were OH MY better. But MAN were they a pain to install.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0399.jpg

I wrapped my stock exhaust pipes with DEI pipe wrap. This is the first start up. The video is 3.5 mins long and the pipes smoked for another 7 mins then I shut the bike down. They were still smoking but had slowed down a bunch. It's not the most exciting video but it goes to show you what happens and why you need to do it outside, not in the garage.

yep and for some reason I like that smell too. The smell sticks around for a while after words too.

Gas Man
03-18-2012, 09:41 PM
Yeah it still smelled today. It actually smells similar to the ceramic.

Got the exhaust all buttoned up, got the heat shields all on and double checked the flanges...

Here's a pic of what you can see behind the heat shields.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0402.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0403.jpg

Got the headlight wire hack installed. They said it was in the fairing... which it wasn't. I'd be pissed if I had removed it just for this but I had to get it off for the heated grips. LOL This has been a long time internet wiring hack, but due to a change in the DOT laws, HD now makes a SOLID plug & play. It allows the aux/spot lights to be on with the high beam and not just the low beam headlight.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0404.jpg

So I got started on the heated grips. Got both grips off (left side was a BITCH due to the glue). Then removed the electric twist grip dilly
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0406.jpg

A neat little thing... there is a matching gear on the inside of the right side grip.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0411.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0412.jpg

Did I ever mention I hate fishing wires...

They have you hook a "fish" wire to the old throttle wire jumper, so that when you pull the old wire through you have a fish wire to pull the new wiring through. The new wiring has the same throttle wire but also the wire for the heated grip. I fished that through...

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0408.jpg
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0409.jpg

I then fished the left side, which had no wire to piggy back with. So I had to cram a coat hanger through it, then hook a wire to that, to fish the left grip wires through. I was so irritated going through this I failed to take any pics... sorry.

Don't have much left to finish it, will do the rest tomry.

Gas Man

Well last night we got it all back together... but I got a check engine light due to 2 codes that put it into limited performance mode (limp mode & it's own code). I checked the end and it looks all normal...

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0415.jpg

Today I spoke to a HD mechanic buddy of mine that said the code which said hi/low open or open circuit. He suggested checking the jumper wire connections. I did and found this in the fairing connection. Shitty...
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0431.jpg

Straightened the pin, plugged it all back, cleared the code and bam... working fully!!!
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0432.jpg

I got my new National Cycle V-Stream ultra low windshield installed. I hope this will be my around town and road trip windshield, instead of swapping.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0416.jpg

The advantage to this one over the HD or Klockwerks is I can use it with my windshield bags. The idea on these is that with their aerodynamics the wind will go over my head, however, there won't be windshield in front of my face. The problem with the stock is in rain or if it's dirty with the sun behind it, it's really hard to see past it. So this way I won't have any windshield in front of my face.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Ultra%20Classic/Mods/2011%20Mod%20Season/IMG_0417.jpg

Then from Trip at www.twowheelvinyl.com got my a new color combo state sticker

Reflective black border so it's visible on the black windshield, with state colors of: chrome silver, HD orange, then R/W/B
