Lots of companies lately have been crossing boarders with sportspikes/touring bikes/cruisers/dual sport/naked bikes

Im wondering where you guys drawl the lines.* Just an open question, take it as you want.* I just was thinking about it, talking with some friends about it, and id thought you guys would want a little discussion about how the sportsbike has spread accross many boards to be able to do all types of things.*

Example-* Busa with bags and passanger, setup for touring, can be easily stripped down and drag raced in a few min.* * Many Supermoto and dual sport bikes out there are just as fun in the twists as a lot of older sports bikes are.* Cruisers are getting lighter, faster and more sporty every year.* And sports bikes are getting stripped down to sexy frames.

So what, in your mind, qualifies as a sports bike?

you could make a case for standard bikes boomer. all street bikes were standards back in the day, very few were catagorized

Right now you can just about make any bike mods you choose on any bike so you can't put anything in a catergory any more.* I just don't see the sportsbikes being crusiers or touring with the mods they have now, but if a person can stand to ride a distances then more power.

Have any of you seen the new Honda DN-01?* Its like a cruiser/standard/sports bike/moped thingy,* it sits straight up, has an automatic trans, and looks very sharp like a sports bike.* It has a pretty big engine, and big breaks and sporty suspenion.* * This really breaks the boundaries.* It has a continuous variable trans, but they call it a Human Friendly Trans.* Its different than there car thrans becauses it doesn't have belts like there car ones do, and its completely self contained, so there is no maintenance on it for like 20K or something, very cool.

Just read an article about that in the recent CW, and that trans is hyd/fluid. It looks like it might reel in new riders, personally though, I like the shifting. Part of what I really like about riding is making the bike work, I'm not to interested in "twist & go" but I can see how some folks would be.

The front fairing/nose reminds me of a car too, though it might look different in person.

Nice I need to ask for one of these at work since its the new hybrid/fuel efficient thing.* I saw this in one of our papers about new tech. Kind of looks like that shark bike/trike, car in our eye candy section.

I read that same article, thats what sparked the idea for this thread,* i was like hey! i wonder what the 2wm guys think of this.* I agree with you about how twist and go is not my style,* but the seating position of that bike looks like something i would be interestide in, now if they took the cbr1000rr engine and trans and threw it in that frame and style, i would pic it up as soon as i could muster the funds.* I would take a loan for one of those babies.* * I think they look dead sexy, anybody else agree? or disagree, please explain why, if you do.

Speaking of "mixing styles", I'm not a fan of the smaller almost moped/scooter looks of some bikes, or the over size, almost motorcycle size moped/scooters.

That Honda DN I'm on the fence about still because in the photos when I see it, I have to look for a minute to figure our if it's a bike or a scooter. As I said, I understand what they want to do with it, and what they want it to do, and thats fine.

I like my bikes to look and work like bikes. I like to be able to know at a glance what I'm looking at, and the more of it to be seen, the better. Looking at standard/naked bikes is like "bike porn" for me because I can see most of it, including the engine, and I've always liked that about motorcycles. Always.

(Don't get me wrong here though, this is just a personal taste issue. I love and respect sportbikes; the performance and power and the updated plastics. However, if I was going out today to buy a brand new bike, it would be a naked version of something.)

Some of this might have to do with my age, as in I'm old enough to cling to a classic looking version of a bike, but young enough to be openminded to new stuff and give it all a fair shake.

I look at the new Suzuki Gladius, and I like it, alot. I look at that Honda DN and I don't know. I'd have to see one in person to make any decision on it, and then it would only be my opinion like the rest of this. Nobody has to agree, disagree, or agree to disagree. To each his own, always.

I remember the old Hondamatic that didn't have to be shifted; big and heavy and not real popular, so I'm glad to see they're getting that technology up to date, and hopefully it gets more folks into riding.* ;)


(or, fuck that DN, buy a real bike.* ;D )

If you like the gladius, you most likely liked the sv650 or sv1000, (naked ones have no s at the end-* sv650s)* * it looks very similar and the older ones you can find used for very little money.

Speaking of being 'old enough'.* I fall into that category and admit my bias toward the standard or 'naked' bike.* Don't get me wrong, I like 'em all, but have some personal favorites.* In addition to the Suzuki Gladius, Kawasaki in now selling the ER-6n in the US.* A nice bike, from what I can tell, but then, I cut my teeth on the Triumphs, BSAs and Nortons of the 60s.*

Yamaha also showed their Yamaha XS-V1 Sakura concept ( a retro design intended to evoke memories of their very successful XS 650) a couple of years ago.* And Honda might be releasing a new naked bike, as well.*

Bottom line?* I love 'em all and when I hit the Power Ball I'll need a huge garage for my collection.*

So many bikes, so little time.

That ER-6n looks cool. They've had that over-seas for a year or two (maybe more) I guess all ready. Standard/nakeds sell better there than here. I understand the Versys(sp?) is gaining momentum here, though personally I'm turned off by the headlight/windscreen assembly.

I've seen that Yamaha you referred to and thought it was cool too. It wouldn't be bad having a new technology bike that looks like they did "back in the day".* ;)

Suzuki has another throw back of their own this year too, a small starter bike. The TU250 ($3500) 250cc, single cylinder, FI engine, probably runs great, but has the old time look to it...

Like you said, bring on the powerball. So many bikes, so little money...(the new Monster is killing me too BTW)

don't care for the looks of the honda and the suzuki at 250cc is too small. small bikes may get good gas milage ( not why i ride a bike ) but only at slow speeds and don't make good expressway rides. just looking at the honda* it looks like the seating position / handle bar relation is all wrong. i'm not spoiled on goldwings but i am spoiled on having a big ( 900cc and bigger ) motor

Love the short movie video. Honda does a great job, they don't hold back a bit. Strong statement, I don't see myself riding one but it's cool they did it. There is a huge untapped market for stuff like this the non riders out number riders many times. Like the Suzuki Bergman these are aimed at non traditional motorcyclists.

i'm building a 750 hondamatic right now so it's not a new concept.
