Thinking hard about heading to SE Ohio this weekend.

What town makes a good base? I am thinking closer to home rather than Marietta end.

I have a pretty good idea which roads to hit, need to know where there is GAS.

Any help from those that have been there a time or two would be appreciated!

:dribble: Look smilies!

Zanesville is great, anything south of there is great riding. Be sure you hit SR555 and SR26 MMMM tasty, GREAT riding. Also, be mindful of deer as there are many.

I was looking at Zanesville because of location. Any hotel or food recommendations? Thinking of safety for my bike at hotel.

We stay at the Hampton Inn off I70 and leave the trailer and truck there (no worries). There's a ton of hotels at that exit, take your pick.
Do lunch in Athens Oh, lots of great places to eat and it's a college town so, lots of young girls walking around:D.
Also there's a BP station outside of Athens, STOP there, and have a look inside, the only gas station/headshop/pornshop/and model cars I've ever seen.

Remember SR555, don't miss it.

BTW, stay away from old mans cave, to many people to much traffic and not much to see really. The riding down there is endless, stop at a rest area and get a free map, they are very nice and show you all the roads.

Kinda wish I could get another weekend down there. Prolly not gonna happen though. It's such a cool place to ride, better then Deals gap IMO. Less traffic, the roads are 95% perfect with alot of nice sweeps and elevated senic views. Some of the roads get quite technical with off camber S turns, and crazy hills. I've discovered maybe 15 covered bridges, bring your camera and have fun.

Here's a vid, notice not one car, it's typical.

Greg: Really sorry to miss this, my new rear exhaust pipe will be here tommorrow but with my grand daughters wedding I won't have a chance to work on it until Saturday. if by some strange chance I get back on the road Sunday I might be able to head down and join you for part of the ride back.

Well, off to work this morning...not in plan. I think I'm gonna shelve it for spring. $300 I can use over the winter.

So Sprink you decided to not go this year? How did you figure $300 costs?

11-20-2011, 06:10 PM
Yea, going by myself would mean 2 nights lodging and meals $200 and $75 in gas....throw in a tee shirt and that's $300 pretty quick.

I also thought I might not have as much fun riding, knowing no one would see me go off the road, alone.

I would like to go in the spring. Planning ahead will help.

I would be up for going if I am off. I hear ya on splitting lodging, that always helps.

11-20-2011, 11:08 PM
A spring trip with 4-6 bikes would be awesome! Of course, more is cool too......

Agreed. That's a good size group. Just be sure that everybody has their bikes ready for the trip. I've been on trips before with guys that had half dead batteries, bold tires, etc... it sucks.

I'm in, I know the roads well and I'm always ready to go down. Zanesville is a great stageing point, with WVa right across the Ohio river and an easy day trip. Lots of great places to eat in Athens Oh with perfect roads all around. Is it Spring yet?

Oh snap. If I only had the time off....

Those lows are cold and the days short right now. Summer is the time, no deer, lots of sunlight, I can't wait.

Hmmm, I may just have to make a trip there, and recommendations in regard to accommodations?
I recommend it, ya know it's funny, I tell people about S/E Oh and i don't think they believe me, the few that have made the trip are blown away.
As far as places to stay it is such a vast area to ride in , your choices are plenty. I like Zanesville on I70, great riding to the east and south from there, safe big enough town to give lots of hotel choices, I like the Hampton Inn , really clean well lit, biker freindly and the not really free breakfast is good, a bit pricey but as I said there are many choices. Also Cambidge further east on I70 has the same choices. The last two times though I've stayed at the best western in Mt Vernon, the hotel mgr rides and he lets me keep my truck and trailer there if we haul them down.
As far as the riding, just pull up google maps and look at the roads south and east even a little north of Zanesville and Cambridge, these are roads in mostly perfect condition winding through Amish country in the foothills of the smokies. Some are VERY technical and will have your full attention, others are just flat out fun to ride with really nice scenery. Just don't miss rt 555, 329 and my favorite 26. all of these roads go on for miles and each time we go down we get surprised again with another good one.
BTW, rt 555 is like going to cedar point and riding all the coasters, crazy crazy road, and you can stop in Athens Oh for lunch, you can't go wrong.

What weekend you think Chain? I may be free the last weekend....

08-22-2012, 04:52 PM
That may work, weather depending... I mean, it don't matter as long as there's NOT some freak 30 deg weather. I'll talk with the wifey, I'm possitive she's game, but she's my calendar. ;)

I hear that. It might be a bit far for that late... I just don't have the time earlier. But by all means, don't let me F up your plans.

08-22-2012, 05:00 PM
Oh hell no! I'll let you know! I'm hoping for a long fall, complete with warm riding weather, I know the last few years we've went riding in late November, temps in the 50's. Which is low end of my wifes riding enjoyment, and when that sun goes down, whew! We'll see!!

08-22-2012, 08:07 PM
Yeah you guys are pushin it but you never know. I did not mention Merrietta because every frickin time I try to get a room there, there's a soccer-softball-bowling-golf-transvestite tournament going on.

I really want to check this out sometime. On my list for sure
