Heya all, found the board from a link on craigslist. I've got a '78 Yamaha XS1100 that's in the middle of a rebuild. I need to rejet the carbs and sync everything as well as sort out the wire harness. I'd damn well better be back on the road this spring. This winter is making me nuts.

This is what I started with

This is what it looked like last year after I started working on it.

Here is where I am now

Welcome man! Nice looking bike. I'm trying to find a 70's-80's metric to work on now too.

Very cool! Nice seat. Who did it?
Any chance you still have the old fairing? It would look good on my ol Kawi.

No way... look at the lines.

Yeah it's definitely the same tank. It looks good that way. Clearcoat it. Kind looks like a BMW tank with the sidepads.

It is indeed the same tank, just stripped and in the process of being sanded. It will be left polished steel. The new seat is a take off from a Dyna. I think I have the fairing in the garage still, I'll look tomorrow.

Oh, and Spaz, the old fairing is a square headlight. When I got rid of the square headlight for a round, the old fairing had to come off. I've got a 1/4 fairing to go with the round headlight, but I'm not 100% I'm going to use it. It'll depend on how it looks in proportion to how much wind it keeps off my chest.

My unheated garage is killing me right now. There's so much I want to be doing on the bike, but it's hard to wrench and shiver.

Is there knee dishes on the tank?

Just the stock one's on the '78 XS1100 standard tank. They look deeper due to being polished.

Yeah I would say so... looks completely changed.

Hopefully see it in person soon.

Well keep me in mind if you don't use the round one. And break down and by a torpedoe heater, will ya? Spring is almost here.

I'll keep ya on mind if I don't use the 1/4 round fairing. I've actually got a gas line out to the garage with a heater out there, but the garage is totally uninsulated. I want to get some kind of insulation in there before I start throwing away money on gas bills. I'm thinking about setting up an old potbelly woodburner for next winter, if I can arrange everything to make room (and not burn my garage down).

Hey, we ride through Lake Orion a lot, the roads are way better than what we have over here on the river, we'll have to plan a meet.
