View Full Version : Road King Mods Begin

Looks like I'm pretty much done for the winter so I'll start a couple projects I have planned. I like the old classic styling of the road king classic so I went with the nostalgia saddle bag guards and some traditional samson fishtails. Tomorrow I'll start tearing down the handle bars, gas tank, clutch and abs brake lines to put on my wild one chubbys 12-1/2 inch apes. Here is the beginning.

Started tearing it down to get ready for the handle bar swap, not the easiest task but shouldn't be a problem. Poor bike has only 600 miles on it and already I tore into it.

You going internal on the wiring?

alhall88

You going internal on the wiring?

Yes, going internal on the wiring. When I was shopping around for bars and wiring kits I found a place called Hill's Custom Cycles that offered a plug and play kit for $1000. The bars would have came pre wired with all the switches and then they included chrome handles and master cylinder. But I found out there were allot of complaints about the chrome. I like the black switches and master cylinder so I found another place called hdbikeparts.com that came highly recommended for handle bar swaps. So I called them (Johnny Vaughn) which is a one man show with great service and he put together a do it yourself kit for me using the bars I wanted. The abs brake line and clutch cable alone run $225.00 so the complete kit ran $550.00 which is a good savings.

Still got the chop?

Yep still have the chop, probably put it up for sale in the spring(I'll take $14,500 for it). The only other things I've done are the doo dad chrome rings on all the lights. I haven't decided yet if I will change the headpipe, air cleaner, and add a tuner yet because honestly i want this bike to be as trouble free as it can be. The only way I will make those changes is after I find out for myself if the catalytic converter really runs hot enough to bother me.

Gas Man
12-05-2010, 09:20 AM
Yeah it's always the wiring/cables/hoses that make a handlebar so expensive. But I'm sure if you're running a set of chubbys those weren't cheap either.

$14,500... ok I'll remember that.

You could always run the Nightrider XiED 's on your stock headpipes. I am and it dropped my oil temp 60*. You'll want at the least that. They are nice. They simply fool your ECM into seeing a leaner condition, it adds the correct amount of fuel bring it back to what it thinks is what it wants, but really it just richened up the mix, which cools down the motor and gives better throttle response.

I've been running that and a K&N replacement filter. Many people told me to replace my air cleaner but I wanted to keep it more "water proof" with all my cross country excursions.

alhall88
12-05-2010, 09:29 AM
Thats the problem with the cat pipe, you can't change the fuel mixture because if you do it will run even hotter. You have to replace it either with aftermarket or use a 2009 headpipe with adaptors for the smaller o2 sensors.Fuel moto makes a nice stainless steel header that uses your stock heatshields.

Lookin Good. Looks like you will be busy for a while.

Gas Man
12-06-2010, 12:15 PM
That doesn't make any sense. Adding fuel to the mix will cool everything down.

Further, Nightrider is selling a set of XiED's for the 2010 & 2011 bikes 96/103/110

WELL? Thanks for the concern, but all's been well, other than we've been swamped. Here at work and bike projects at home. And seems no end in sight. I have a little time frame, and ChopperDave text me, and I thought I'd get back on... So.... here we are! :)

As always Al, you made that bike nice! My apes have been sitting in a box (along with a 21" RC rim and other shit), waiting for my turn on the lift.... I'm thinking this weekend.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e297/alhall88/IMG_0075.jpg
And then a couple slick little items. folding rear shifter peg lets you click it back when on the highway and back when you want to use the rear shifter.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e297/alhall88/IMG_0077.jpg
And this little bolt on deal that has a plastic bottom and no more pads or wood needed when on asphalt or gravel or even grass they claim.

Looks good. I really like the badge idea.

Is that corbin a bit stiff? They use a closed cell foam versus most use an open cell. That's what gives it the stiff feel.

On that kick stand thing... do you leave that attached on the kickstand at all times?

Yes the unit stays on the kickstand which is the beauty of it and you cant really notice when its retracted in the up position. As far as the corbin goes you can't beat them in my opinion for long distance riding, this will be the 4th one I've owned

Looks great! Let me know how the folding rear shifter works for you, I am not a fan of the heel shift, I was looking at that as an option.

Also, let us know how well the kickstand thing works. Looks like it would be great on hot asphalt, not so sure about soft grass, might be too small? Right now I carry an electrical box cover plate in my windhsield bag, but I'd love to getit out of there.

Well I said I was going to leave this bike alone performance wise but failed again. I just couldn't stand the fact that it had a catalytic convertor choking it. So this means new header pipes, air cleaner and tuner. I started a couple days ago and still waiting for some parts o I started the teardown.

Got everything done today, stage one kit complete. New Vance and Hines Dresser Duals, Screaming Eagle Air cleaner, Power Commander PCV. No o2 sensors with this setup. Big difference in sound with the cat gone, the duals are not the best for power gains but that wasn't what I was going for. These things look awesome way better than stock.
PCV plug and play the guys at Fuel Moto pre mapped the unit using my setup.

Yes the mfg. is IMT but they only sell to dealers now, but its all the same price. The dealer just has them drop shipped direct to you and it only took 2 days to get mine. Tele did you get the aluminum gusset that goes on the front mount? They recently added this for any torsional flex that customers were experiencing.

telecast
05-01-2011, 07:55 AM
Yeah, but he had to send them afterwards, they weren't in the box from JP.

Great guy, good company. When I first installed them I noticed the flexing and emailed him, he sent the gussets right out. They make a huge difference.

JP advertised the set with the heel pin in their catalog, but they sent me a set without. They didn't even carry the set with the pin at the time. It's not a big issue, they're easy enough to flip out with your toe, but they would've been nice to have.

I realize I'm reviving an old thread, but your bike looks completely killer.

I dont like the cats either, this spring I'm gettting a 2-1-2 pipe from Fuelmoto (x-pipe B), its ceramic coated inside and out, and it allows you to keep the stock heat shields. I'll have them installed when they install the bars (14").

Nice Motherwell rack, I had one on my Heritage.

On the other hand, the hard lowers with the locking glove box kit from Hardbagger.com has an extra left door with a bottle holder. Before I had the hard lowers I had a Kruzer Kaddy attached to the engine guard but with the hard lowers and the kit from Hardbagger I can solve my drinking problem, LOL

That is if I ever hear back from Hardbagger after I paid by PayPal. Ordered Friday 8/31, here I am 9/5 no tracking number or order confirmation (other than from Paypal)

Al, question about your saddlebag guards. How do you buckle your bags? I have the same kit on my bike and I have to thread the strap between the rails to slip them through the loop (see my sig pic), otherwise the buckles would have to go behind the rails. Same for you? Or do you just leave the strap hanging out?
