Responses to junkyard's post got me to thinking. A lot of diverse answers. It'd be interesting to see what's the most common personal protection round without having to count them. I've tried to include the most common calibers, but the poll is limited to 10 choices so the .44 mag is out! I also left out weird rounds like the .38 Super and the uncommon metric loads you find in Walthers, etc.

I went with the .380 and .38. Small, light, and effective with the right load. Magnums are too scary, too much oomph, they'll go through 3 walls and take out an innocent bystander. I have a Ruger Security Six 6" bbl in stainless that I keep for home defense, but I load it with .38 wadcutters.

I guess a lot would depend on if it was protection on the road or in the home. For personal carry I love the .380. Will do just as much damage as a 9mm without the kick, not that the 9mm has that much of a kick. I'm just a firm believer that with the larger guns the kick can be so much that if you miss the attacker first or they are still coming at you, that by the time you get the gun back in control that split second could mean life or death. For the home I really prefer a shorter barrel shotgun but it's not as easy to fling around as a pistol.

Right, I should've qualified it. This is for a carry piece, not home defense.

I carry my 9mm more than my .380 just because it's lighter, but I like my .380 so much more. I really should start carrying it more and just get used to it.

I picked .38 Special because this is what I load in my Dan Wesson .357 snubby. I do however load them in +P w/Hornady XTP and if I am camping in the backwoods I always chamber the magnum. I like the options this revolver gives me and as Bob said it is harder to recover from the recoil of a hot load.
Only one qualifier: If your a good shot and plant the first round properly there's nothing better than a big chamber.
I did mention in another thread the .45 but don't carry that regularly so the .38 it is.

Same here. When the Ruger goes in the woods it gets .357's. Can't remember the round it's been so long since I loaded any. Seems like a Hornady, I know it's an HP, can't recall the powder or charge.

BTW, who voted for the .40 Smith? That's a great round. I'd get one of them before another .45, just too big for everyday carry IMO.

I picked 9mm because it is what I usually carry. The 32 goes better with beach wear though. While I own a high cap 9, if I carry a big gun it's a 45.

9mm vs .45 is worse than Dino vs Synthetic on a gun forum.

7.62x54 isn't an option :(

You didn't list my 357 sig. what I like about this round is that the plinking ammo is loaded just as hot as the personal protection ammo. Although there are many arguments of the sig round verse the magnum.

Too uncommon a round with only 10 choices. For that you could vote in the .357 category, close enough.

This is the load I use.
.357 Magnum
158 Grain Hornady XTP
15.6 Grains/H110
O.A.L. 1.580
1500 F.P.S.

Man, it's been so long since I did any loading I can't even remember powder brands! Seems like there was a 5150 pistol powder I might've used? I don't know. At one time I reloaded .38, .357, .45, and .35Rem for my Thompson Center Contender. I sold it all a long time ago.

I still haven't purchased a new gun, leaning toward the Ruger LCP. When I get it I'm going to pick up 5-10 boxes of ammo and some reloading gear. I'll probably get dies for the .380 and .38 Special. I won't shoot enough .357 to be worth a set of dies, at least not right off the bat.

380 Ruger LCP is my most common carry cause its pocket small. Great for shorts in the summer, and for places I maybe shouldn't carry as well.

Otherwise, I luv luv luv my glock 23 40 cal.

Both have crimson trace lasers for faster shots where it counts. Plus in the heat of the moment of ACTUAL use, it's one less thing you have to worry about. Most people don't consider what kind of adrenaline you will have if you have to pull it in a defensive situation. Even for cops, it F's you up. You sight becomes drawn in, your blood pressure sky rockets and your muscles become ultra sensative. You will feel like your arms in water. I don't want to rely on taking sight acquisition to make a good shot. Red dot marks the spot.

Guess thats a bit off topic here.

Some things are just nuts. That's one of them. Shooting that gun in .35 Rem with a full rifle load was bad enough, I can't imagine a 600 Nitro Express through one.

The only rounds I could find for the .35 Rem were SJ or FMJ, so I'd cast my own bullets for silhouette shoots. Those were fairly light loads. Shooting two boxes of full loads for hunting was punishing.

My Walther PPKS goes everywhere with me, a little on the heavy side,(S.S.), but shoots way better than I do.

It's been a while since anyone voted, so I guess we can call this poll closed.

The .380 and .45 tied for the win with 4 votes each.
Holding down second place by itself is the .40 smith with 3 votes.
The 9mm and .38 Special are tied for 3rd with 2 votes each.

Not surprising the .25 and .32 got no love, and really the same for the .44 Special. But I am surprised that the 10mm and .357 mag didn't pick up a vote. I'm also a bit surprised the 9mm finished so low as popular as they were a few years ago.
