I'm bored here in class so I think I'll make one of these threads.

I picked up this bike a couple of weeks ago (Thanks to ApexFactor for getting it home for me) and took it home to start hacking it up. Anyway heres the pics of what it looked like when I got it.

This week I've had the chance to pull off the front fender, windscreen, turn signals, handle bars, grips, highway bars/engine guard, mirror, and reflectors.

I put on some drag bars with new grips and had to source some new lines for the clutch and brake. Also I'm making new switches for the high beam/low beam switch along with a new horn button and choke because I had to remove the control block that they all were mounted to.

I'm still waiting on a new exhaust and lower rear shocks. After that its repainting this god awful color and adding a solo seat.

Heres a few quick shots of what it looks like now minus clutch cable and with the choke lever resting on the gas tank lol.

so are you going bobber or cafe/street fighter look because throw on some rear-sets and you have the later.

what kind of exhaust are you doing? is it still a 4-1 or dual 2-1?

the thing i wondered when i was going to work on my buddies maxim with him (never did anything other than push it into his back yard then we lost touch after he quit work) is how i was going to chop the frame and change the sit. so if you can take some pics cuz i want to see what I would have had to work with.

I'm going with the bobber look. once I remove the rear plastics and seat and lower the bike it will look a lot more street bobber than cafe/fighter than it looks now. Just the solo seat alone lowers the riding position about 2 1/2 inches plus lowering the bike about 3". The exhaust I'm going with is a mac 4 to 1 but I'm going to lose the megaphone muffler if the carbs still play nice and go for a straight pipe.

The bike still has a long way to go but I'll document the whole thing here. :weld:

The only thing I don't like about the flat black bike is that they did not use a hard tail they just welded the soft tail solid. It looks bad to me. I like the red one though.

Just dropped the bike off today at Detroit Bros to have some welding and other frame mods done. I can't wait for spring lol!

Grant,

What did you have the DB shop do? It looks like you chopped of the seat rails and added posts for the solo?

They made a custom front mount for the seat along with welding the rear posts. They made the sportster springs work on my bike with new urethane bushings and the fabricated a license plate holder/brake light with one of their billet aluminum led lights.

I'm still waiting on them to install a new shortened clutch cable and choke cable.

Cool, I didn't see the side mount and light. Looks sweet. Did you consider running led's to the holes left from the seat rails?
The non-dropseat shovel frame on the ground gives me a woody.
May I ask, was the price decent?

Next weekend I'm "sourcing" 2 Winchester 12 gauge shotgun shells to put in the holes from my dads beretta lol.

They haven't given me a final quote yet but I'm told it will be between $500-$800.

Holy crap dude! Bring it over my place and I'll weld it up for you and make some brackets for the seat. That's freaking nuts! For that kind of money you could of gotten a custom hardtail section made and welded on.

The sportster struts didn't end up being a direct bolt on either so a little more work went in there too than it looks like.

Yeah there will be more work to do to this bike in the future that I can't do so any help is welcome. I'm just trying to get work done quick so I can get this thing painted and into storage cause I don't have a means of transporting it other than riding it and I don't have my endorsement yet. So Detroit Bros was a shop I know (a buddy of mine used to work there) and I know I could trust them but I'm always open to new places to get work done.

well as long as they tie the rear frame rails together, it's all good.

well as long as they tie the rear frame rails together, it's all good.

All the end of the frame did was support the rear seat and was 2 open rails stock anyway so I think I should be fine. I did have them put some beads down into the open rail where it connected to the rear down rail to reinforce them.

I'm a little worried about the front fork though cause I pulled the front fender off and haven't ridden it yet to see if it wobbles the front forks. Im sure it won't be as much of a problem when I lower the front end.

I've been working on the bike when I've had free time over the last couple weeks. Ive gotten most of the painting done before the really cold weather hit. Now all I'm waiting for is the tank to come back from paint, get the wiring for the high beams and horn figured out, and polish the fins on the engine.

It works out pretty good until it gets too cold. If it was my own garage I wouldn't think twice about stuffing a propane heater in there with me but since I have to have the door shut to work there that would be a bad idea...

Had a big fffffuuuuuu moment today when I tried to check the fuse for the headlight. This is what I found.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5286/5227696960_38ac1ee47b_z.jpg

I tried to test the voltage on the pigtail going to the bulb but I got nothing there. I'm electrictly retarded though. This is my first time using a volt meter.

I'm thinking the po probably rewired parts of the bike and now I'm at a bit of a loss as of what to do.

In other news the bike has started to make a cool noise in the front around the tach. Heres a short vid of the wining noise it makes under throttle.

I ended up using a car jack on the exhaust while it was on the center stand to lift the front end. I don't really care about the exhaust cause I have a wrapped new mac 4 to 1 going on so ignore the rusty pipes lol.

I think it turned out pretty good. I have about 1/16 inch clearance on either side of the forks. The disc was a pita to get in the caliper though.
