So in the pre-planning of my worky escape and last MC trip of the year...
2 bikes
3.5 days
4 states
1300+/- miles

Here's the plotted map on GOOGLE (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=flat+rock,+mi&daddr=41.76016,-87.89023+to:Illinois+Beach+State+Park,+Zion,+IL+to :400+West+Canal+Street,+Milwaukee,+WI+53203-3208+(Harley+Davidson+Museum)+to:45.53643,-87.28268+to:koa+campground,+Manistique,+MI+to:45.6 3676,-84.84857+to:45.6401,-85.04566+to:8000+West+Harbor+Highway,+Glen+Arbor,+ MI+49636+(D.H.+Day+Campgrounds)+to:43.17758,-86.20529+to:flat+rock,+mi&geocode=FS9XggIdHhEJ-ymNB0qRwEA7iDGwFetPneFXpg%3BFaA1fQIdyubC-iktZBmsZ0gOiDF2yTjMr3q4Mg%3BFUxWhwIdfjHE-iHNsxBqvoIiMyk93vnNuvMPiDEeWLM1A93SWA%3BFVSbkAIdTn zC-iE9ux0KQkCpoCmz68u7mRkFiDF2tEgNNdfoWw%3BFa7UtgIdCC zM-ilN-q81VHZNTTFFBR6KVxqCFw%3BFUcwvQIdfQDc-iH3NEyZV6GhYA%3BFZhcuAIdRlDx-ikhE8Rzh3dKTTETd5mBdG80QQ%3BFaRpuAIdZE7u-il7r1p59GVKTTHC2llVuCGJ3Q%3BFcIfrQIdbHDf-iF-PpKT1aa-5ClhkKzLzR0eiDE7Yg1wkai5Xw%3BFWzWkgIdlpzc-inRKNgxm34ZiDHRhY-igt8CiA%3BFS9XggIdHhEJ-ymNB0qRwEA7iDGwFetPneFXpg&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=4&mrsp=9&sz=8&via=1,4,6,7,9&sll=43.679791,-85.407715&sspn=1.76388,3.521118&ie=UTF8&ll=43.044805,-86.275635&spn). Avoiding Chi-Town and keep it tight to the water. Keep it a nice calm laid back ride, taking time to get good pictures and enjoy the ride. No rush to make the destination, the ride is the destination. Well so we thought on the no rush... but a late start on Friday puts a rush in ya

I got all loaded up and ready to go...

My riding partner for this trip Caveman got out of work at 1330, he raced home got bike last minute packing done. Then ready to depart only to find cb not working right on his bike. Pulled the maxi fuse and forced a reboot. That worked.

Get gas around the corner and find this in front of my gas pump... a GREAT way to start the trip. What an cutter!

Got on road 1500.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Riding/Lake%20Michigan%20Loop%202010/LML2KX006.jpg

But the worse part was the wind on the first 4 hrs of riding. Heading south with a 30mph wind out of the west with 50mph gusts. BLOWS! Then when we turned into it. Fierce headwinds once we turned west. Burnt way more gas than should have. Instead of getting 200miles to a tank we were getting like 150. Of well. The winds died down and we pushed on.

Late start gives u late arrival and doing camp setup, getting a fire and everything in the dark. Grrr.

We stayed at the Illinois beach state park. Great park for anybody in future. Its directly between chicago and milwalkee. Thursday I did the girly job of grocery shopping for us. Packed all the food and some beverages into the cooler you see on my bike. So Friday night we had smoked pork chops, as well as the potatoes in foil with olive oil. Damn it was yummy, all cooked on the open fire.

So this morning we get up. Break camp. Hit up this great diner at the suggestion of the park ranger. Emily's pancake house, just up the road. Menu says 2 eggs and u got 4. And tt was before I played with all the howt talent servicing us. Nice big breakfast goes a long way especially with cold weather riding.

We haul ass up 94/43 in pilgrimage to Milwaukee HD Motorcycle Museum (http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/HD_Museum/Museum.jsp?bmLocale=en_US&camp_id=16&source_cd=SEM_Museum)[/URL] and met up with Wildchild and his wonderfull wife. *thanks so much wild for coming out, hope wifey warms back up!!*

Today it was confirmed. Wisconsin drivers are the best. They actually get out of ur way in the left lane. After all, we were doin 85 the whole way.

Get north so we can get out of the city. The good loop doesn't start till u get into michigan. Go figure!

We tried to stop by a hd dealer for caveman but the sob was closed by 1530 when we arrived. JC! Grabbed a calzone at a italian jt (Luigi's). Then hit the rd again. Wow its gettin cold. Maybe it hit 50 but mostly in the 40's all day. Then its getting dark and it happened. Fuckstick! I see my breathe! Add tt 85mph down US35 and US2 and it is f'in cold. Finally setup camp and all the firewood tt took us 2 seperate stops to get is cold & wet due to temps and humidity. FINALLY get fire gg and cook marinated chicken dinner (Italian & Garlic Herb) with ready to eat meal lasagna. It was yummy.

Hey cave. What's the quote?

"Real bikers camp in sub 40* weather and cook on open fire in full leathers!"

Sunday morning...
We continue east on US2 towards Mackinaw.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/Riding/Lake%20Michigan%20Loop%202010/LML2KX167.jpg

Got up a bit late cause it was freakin cold. There was frost on the tent in the middle of the night to say the least. The koa we stayed in last night, was less than great but at that the point of we had to crash. Had we been able to arrive into Manistique at a decent hour we would have found a much better campground on the east side of the town. Which we saw like 5 prospect campgrounds on the way out of Manistique Sunday morning. Always find something when you're not lookin for it.
But all was forgotten with the mornings ride. This section of route was best of it all.

Slept in again today (monday) and we head south down US22. Winding us throught dunes and surrounding hills.

Well down 22, then back to trust US 31 south. Till we get to 96 East. It was cold and dreery and I couldn't get warm for nothing. We finally hit 96, we were blazin thru Grand Rapids at about 96mph. I was tired, cold, and tired.
We hit our first and only sprinkles about 10 miles out from home but it quit as fast as it thought about starting! I guess the wind and cold was our payment to mother nature on this trip.

It was about 1314 miles in 3.5 days and through 4 states, 3 of which got me new stickers.

Nice pics, looks like a great time!

You seriously need to squash your desire to put up pics. 3 closeups of campfires, 3 closeups of your tent, and 6 (count 'em, 6) shots of bugs on the bikes!

If you really want to impress us, take one of those pics of the bugs and label them. Put little arrows pointing to the bugs with tags, like Mosquito, Black Fly, Gnat, June Bug.....

:D

Feel free tele to label said bugs.... I'm not that knowledgeable with my bugs.

Looks like trouble right there:eek:

You can't beat that west Michigan shore line in the summer. Did that Legs Inn, tunnel of trees, the Bridge, ( that fat tire-skinny tire-long wheel base over the grating puckered my cheeks ) and coast line myself this summer. It was not 40 out though.

Great pix Chris! Least you had sun! We had shitty 47-50 degrees the whole time up to Houghton/Hancock. We were pinched for time with the cold, so we never made it to Copper Harbor... :( 3 weeks ago... c-o-l-d! You MUST ride there! We plan on it again next year!

Then last weekend it was 47 and steady mist all the way up and thru the Tunnel of trees! This weekend looks to be gorgeous and we can't get away!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again, always love your story's and pix! Wish I was better at documenting all that shit!

It was cold! I want to do a UP loop. All around the UP. I think that in itself would be a cool trip in itself. Maybe even do a lake superior loop with it! Also would like to do a mit loop.

If you look back at my google map... we left Friday late 1500. Headed for the other side of chicago. Sat was all of wisconsin and although it was overcasted and cloudy no rain. Sunday was from masnistique around, over mac, down the unnel of trees and stayed in sleeping bear dunes..

Wierd how we had allot of the same paths but totally different weather!

That is one of our plans next year. A Lake Superior loop. The wife and I need to get our passports:confused: been putting that off.... coulda used them several times. As much as we've frequented the UP since getting the SG. Still she can only handle (the wife) about 500 miles and she's ready for a cold one. ;)

Nice ride, reminds me of ours back in '07, did an Ironbutt. Left out of Lansing at 6:00 P.M. down around through Chicago, up through Milwakee and Green Bay, on to Escanaba, over to St. Ignace and back down to Lansing, arriving at 2:00 P.M. the next day. Would love to run it again, except Chicago, and take a few days doing it. Congrads!!!

When I'm out on a multi day trip like this I am obsessed with listening to the weather and planning around it.

I have to plan around my work schedule and sometimes with others too boot. So weather be damned 99% of the time.

Wouldn't be a true Gasman / Caveman trip with out at least one trial and tribulation of weather. This trip was absolutely beautiful weatherwise, rain I mean when it did start to sprinkle when we were close to home I think Mother Nature decided we had paid dearly enough with the temps up in Da UP. When we were lookin for the place to stay it was bitter cold, then Gas didn't have but a basic summer bag, he FROZE. I however, was a little better prepaired (go figure me more prepped over Gas) had a -40 mummy bag and was perfectly toasty. He got a little mad when I wouldn't share, sorry dude, mummy bags tight enough with just one fatass adult in it. :lmao:
