View Full Version : Purpose of vest?

Ok, I have a question. I saw a lot of bikes out this weekend and noticed a lot of guys wearing leather vest. My question is, what is the point to wearing a vest unless you are concealing a shoulder rig or are wearing a club patch or something? To me it just seems like it'd make it hotter.

It covers the areas I can readily apply ontiment to road rash myself.

nothing says "I'm a bad ass" like a leather vest.

For me it keeps clothing from flappin in the breeze. Did 615 miles last Friday and it would have driven me nuts to have not worn a vest. Oh, and did I mention I'm bad ass!lol:D

I bought one last year, have yet to use it. Too hot, doesn't really offer much protection. I'd much rather have my T-shirt flapping in the breeze.

I've done a couple of rides with the Patriot Guard. If I end up with a patch (undecided) I may use it, but they also have T-shirts with the logo so I'll probably do that instead.

I ride with a full perforated leather jacket and it's not too hot at all. I looked for a vest but the one I wanted was $350. Fuck that.

You can get cheaper vests Rider. But I myself want to buy a more expensive vest.

Oh and I am a badass! LOL

I've been thinking about getting one myself. The only reason though is I do like to ride in t-shirts - usually long sleeve at least, but the shirt flapping against my sides itches like crazy for some reason - especially on long rides.

Maybe I just need to get some tight ass muscle shirts .... ;)

Drink more beer. Your gut will get bigger and stretch the shirt out so it doesn't flap. So, not only do you solve that problem, but you get to drink a lot of beer.

At least that's what I did.

True, I guess I never thought of that. Plus if you carry an iwb holster it'll help keep your shirt down over it I guess?

Same here as far as jackets go. But $350 for a freaking vest?! My jacket cost 1/2 that and has ce armor in the back, shoulders and elbows. LOL

I guess if I got one it'd give me a place to sew my Wild Hogs and Sons of Anarchy patches to huh?

Actually my Dan Wesson .357 fits real well in the inside pocket. A .380 or similar would work well also.

Man those are like my dream guns. I love Dan Wesson and CZ. What model do you have?

How big is the inside pocket? I have a CZ-83 I like to carry but end up carrying my smaller 9mm 99% of the time because it's so much lighter.

It's a model 15-2, .357 6 shot revolver with a 2.5 inch barrel. My dad gave it to me. He bought it back in 78 and never really shot it much. I load 158 grain Hornady XTP'S and it shoots real well. I had it at the range a few weeks ago and got 9 out of 10 in the black at 25 yards. I should mention the black on a 25 yard NRA target is about 8" in diameter.
Anyway I do like the gun a lot. I just ordered a concealment holster from a place called Simply Rugged. This guy makes all kinds of custom holsters. Should have it in a couple weeks. For now I just drop it in my vest pocket.:D

Nice man! I've been thinking of a shoulder rig for when I ride. My iwb holds really nice but I'm always reaching back there and checking when I'm riding to make sure it's not sticking out or anything.

I'd love to get a full size Dan Wesson one day. I almost bought a DW revolver about a year ago but the guy sent me the original pics, which were larger than the ones he posted on the net, and the gun was in pretty rough shape.

no shirt slapping, carry smokes, phone and so forth, offer some protection. ok very little but it'll stop pebbles and bee's. yeah bee's, those suckers don't like me much LOL. i've never been stung in the chest/stomach wearing a vest. seems when i don't wear it, they stalk me LOL.

Yeah, I know. The S&W 500 is a pretty big handgun. Myself, I'd go for the smaller 460XVR.:D

i was wearing full gear one day, pretty much like every day when i ride, and a wasp had flown into my coat at a stop.. i felt something on my back so i slapped at it - big mistake.. fucker started stinging me.. i promptly pulled off the road, threw the bike down and ripped off my coat - within probably a 15 second timeframe he stung me 6 times.. vest or no vest that day i was going down.. the gear was actually working against me.. i am sure some people driving by had a good laugh.. and some fucker on ebay got $20 off me for a mirror i broke..

A vest really doesn't give you much protection, however there are some reasons why I wear mine.
1. Pockets- There easy to get too and can carry keys, phone, wallet and conceal a firearm if needed. Ever rode 250 miles with a wallet in your back pocket? Gets sore after a while.
2. Versitile - by this i mean it gives you some protection from the elements. If you wear extenders the air vents through and across the body. In cooler weather where a jacket is just to much it can be buttoned up for warmth. If you run into rain they will keep your core from getting wet and cold for a little while. At least until you can pull over or change to a jacket.
3. Patches - Not just club or organization patches, but also events, locations, quotes, memorials etc. It's a way to express our individual selves. It's what makes us unique among the masses. It's like a symbol of our individual freedom.
4. They look badd ass.

Ok, who in the hell let this guy in? One thing we don't need around here is common sense!
