Well I pulled the trigger tonight on a loan... want to do a few things to the house...

Anybody know anybody that does the following???

First and foremost due to the season winding down...

Want to get siding, trim, and gutters done... (all contracted)

Carpet (I'll remove, they install)

Kitchen cabinets (just the material, I'll do the install)

Your old buddy Brad's dad and brother does all of that minus the carpet.* My brother in-law does carpet and did out house not too long ago.

I know a carpet guy, and a kitchen "cabinets, counter-tops, walls" guy. The kitchen guy is actually a home improvement guy but he likes doing that wood shit, and specializes in kitchens on the side.

I'll get with both of them in the next couple days, see if they're interested, and if so, I'll PM you their phone numbers, and you can do what you like with it from there.

Joe's carpet service in Taylor (734-374-2554).* Anyone I've referred to him has ended up going with him.

10-02-2008, 12:25 PM
Vortech, are you in or around Taylor somewhere?

10-02-2008, 12:56 PM
Oh yeah, I'm in Brownstown, a downriver rat

Thanks guys!

Doug... let me know.*

I have a home improvement guy as well but I don't know if he does siding or carpet.* The carpet is really nothing much... I'll clear all the furniture and remove the old... just need to buy the new stuff and get it installed.

10-06-2008, 06:38 AM
I can't reach the carpet guy.* ???

The other guy spent the weekend hunting, so I'm shooting for today or tomorrow with him.

Cool.* I got a couple other places... and I have setup appts and/or placed calls on the siding stuff.

How many bids do you think I should take before pulling the trigger on who?

The rule of thumb is 3 bids.* Honestly check some of their work and ask for references though.* Cheapest is not always best.

Oh yeah always check... honestly I'm only calling people that know people or have done work for them.

I have 4 lined up for the siding... so I'll just stick there I guess

10-06-2008, 03:13 PM
Yeah 3 is the usual, but nothing wrong with 4, just a little more thinkin for you. Talking to a person or two who had some work done is real helpful, and even better if you can drop bye and eyeball stuff.

Well I got my siding done.*

Well I have been tied up getting estimates on siding, trim, and gutters.* I went thru a few contractors and went with this guy.* Mike Ford from CMF Construction 313-215-5642.* Give him a call if you need some GREAT work for a GREAT price. I have included pics of before and after.* T

he work is by far some of the best if not the best I have ever saw.* *

We went with siding on the gables and the back.* Vynal cedar shake on the front of the garage and the front porch.* Alum trim throughout, including the amazing tripple bend trim on non-gutter edges.* Not to mention the oustounding frost board and header board above the garage.* All that great alum trim is hand bent in my driveway on a break.* Simple incredable!* *

The one pic of the down spout shows my new setup.* The way it is in the pic into the PVC for winter time, so I don't have any ice on the walkway and driveway, then I slide off the flex hose and attach the other one with the elbow during spring/summer/fall months.* All the gutters are seamless with each joint sealed up tight on the inside and hung with screws, not nails.

You all should check it out in person and welcome me to the non-painting or maintance world of new siding. Please if you need any type of work like this, stone, brick, windows... give Mike a call.*

Really it was a inexpensive improvement and something that is well worth it.* Total cost was about $100.* That includes the fixtures, bulbs, dimmer switch, new double bang box, circuit breaker, and some wire off a 250' roll (purchased to do this and upcoming kitchen project).*

Now when I want to do something I'll have some decent amount of light... could have used it a few weeks ago when doing the tv project.

Thank god we haven't put the new furniture in this room, cause we filled it with kitchen junk.* Later I put the xmas decor away and put the dining room table and chairs, as well as the microwave in there if you can believe that

Then in the process we hauled the old cabinets downstairs to the basement utility room.* Brinks again came to help.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/ ... ays043.jpg (http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/DemoDays043.jpg)[/img]

This wall had the shelving all the way accross it.* Those stupid metal "L" shaped brackets with 3/8" plywood.* Cheap, effective, but didn't look nearly this good. (Don't mind my childhood toy chest.* The wife's cat, Avril, checking out the new liter box location
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/ ... ays044.jpg (http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/DemoDays044.jpg)[/img]

That was all done Friday evening, and Sat, and a few hrs on sunday.* In between me working night shift too, its been a ruff weekend... especially the day after the holidays.* Man o man...

After 2 attempts to get my cabinets delievered (cancelled twice for trucking company issues, and working on getting my delivery fee back due to)... I finally got them today...

The last pic above shows the plug there installed.* That one... right side constant off one circuit for the microwave, the left one is on a different circuit controlled by the dimmer near the sink.

Moved the remaining cabinets into the kitchen

That was a few hours the tuesday.* Then on wed, I built the custom toe kick for the wall cabinets that are going on the floor for the buffet counter.* (please don't mind my bro's gay comments, he's a bastard and didn't get held enough by mom)* In order to do this, I took the measurement off the pantry and duplicated it by rippin a set of 2x6's to the proper size.

Some think I must not work...* I do work... what I skip is sleeping.* Got 1 hr of sleep last night on the couch before the granite template guy showed up.

Did a few more things today and will do some more tonight... The wife wants to help so I told her I would wait... man she is awesome!!

The template guy was GOOD.* But he broke some bad news...* even though the cabinet lady said the 36" corner sink base cabinet would fit the standard 30" double bowl undermount sink would fit.* I had my doubts and the granit guy confirmed.* NO WAY without MAJOR cabinet modification that is simply unaccepatable.* So goint to order a Blanco Diamond granite composite D-shaped single bowl undermounted sink in black.* Took my Franke double bowl granite composite back to lowes.* List price on the Blanco is $475 but I found it online for $249... just waiting till monday to check locally (closed for holiday) to see if they can beat price and time line.* Lowes was at $400 and 3 weeks out... unacceptable.* So we'll see.* counter top is on hold till they get the sink and I pick out the slab.* However, I planned on 2-3 weeks for counter tops and they will get them done in 7-10 days.* Add in 1 week for new sink purchase... and I'm still on schedule.

moral of the story...

even in home improvents "custom doesn't bolt on"!!!*

Getting some more work done... summary of the last couple days

Neighbor, Sgt, came over and did all the copper soldiering for us.* I laid it out but he did all the assembly with soldiering.* It turned out good.* The 2 caps on either side of a joist is where the old lines were.* They got capped and we ran a new T and lines to the new cabinet.* Test ran water thru them and the new PVC drain, no leaks.
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/ ... -35002.jpg (http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Install3-35002.jpg)[/img]
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/ ... -35005.jpg (http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Install3-35005.jpg)[/img]

Then with the newly stripped off butcher block top off the old dishwasher (probably fake) put on top of the cabinet in the basement that had just a plywood top.* Looks much better I think.*
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/ ... -35008.jpg (http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Install3-35008.jpg)[/img]

Then got the toe kicks installed including the custom one below the buffet table, with the heat vent cut out of that.* Then we put the quarter round down and covered the heat duct with a new vent.*
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/ ... -35011.jpg (http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Install3-35011.jpg)[/img]

You can also see that we did the toe kick by the sink base and dishwasher section.* Got that all finished with quarter round as well.* Turned out GREAT!!!*
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/ ... -35010.jpg (http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Install3-35010.jpg)[/img]

Also, poped off the trim under the front window sill.* Because there will be a granite backsplash under the marble sill.* Totally Custom.*

Then today we got the sofet extended and put the 45* angle to the corner.* All with the same reveal.* It will end up looking great.* Just needs some sanding, more mud, some tape, sanding, mud, sanding, primer, paint.*
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/ ... -35021.jpg (http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l311/cjclark69/House/Ktichen/Install3-35021.jpg)[/img]

Will work more on the sofet tomry and dry wall work.* On the home stretch for sure.* I can feel it... at this point, its just a project a day while we wait on granite.*

No sleep cause work on the house, work at work, and life just got in the way.

Well its nearly 99% official.* I'm going to do the 2 main bathrooms as well.* I got the bug and going full force with it... its really in my nature.* Probably throw some paint on my way back to them as well.* If I paint the hallway and master bed on the way to those 2 bathrooms it should help with the coloring.* All the other rooms are done besides these that match the main living room.* So that will help...

Sorry for being MIA... last weekend we got a shit load of snow and that pretty much put me out of spare time at work and home. Couple that with the kitchen project and I've been OUT OF TIME.

So all last week I was doing drywall/mud work on the room.

Put on a piece of trim behind the stove... you guys know how I am about details...

Put on a coat of killz 2 primer

That was the turning point so we cleaned up the drywall dust and took down the plastic walls.

Then threw on a coat of paint

Then tuesday the Granite got installed

Sink cut out & mount

The small piece next to the stove

The buffet and backsplash install

Wed I got a few things done.

The plug to the right of the buffet installed in the pantry

Then I installed the under cabinet lights

Here's the plug I need to plug into above the micro. The left side is on the dimmer by the sink and the right side is constant power from a diffrent circuit for the microwave.

Drilled my holes and started to run my wires

Repeated 6 times... keeping all the wires in the cabinets to keep a clean look outside... I need to get my pic of the finished wiring off the camera with the action shots of the lights. They turned out great!

Wanted to button up the sink... installed the faucet

Installed the disposal, and plumbing
*leak frog standing watch

While Natron and peanut watched.. what a GOOB

Look MOM it works!

Now time for Uma to watch Peanut

After the granite install they unscrewed the pantry to give them some allowance to get the top in. So I need to re-adjust the cabinet and its fillers.

Then I installed the door knobs... 18 of them...

Now I also did another coat of paint, installed the drawer pulls. Almost ready for backsplash then all kinds of trim. Would have got more done but Brinks had a few vet appts.

Well here's the pics from last week

I put on the drawer pulls. There are only 4 drawers in the whole kitchen.

I installed the under cabinet lighting with carefull detail to keeping the wiring as hidden as possible.

Some run this wiring all under the cabinet but I don't want anybody to see it. They won't see it inside the cabinet once the cabinet is populated so that is my angle.

And of coarse as stated before they are on a dimmer

Then we put a new coat of primer on the ceiling. I think the house has, like many people wrongly do, primered white ceilings. Its not a good idea cause over a couple years it yellows and becomes an off white. You don't notice till you put new ultra pure white paint to it. I went with a good Behr Eggshell paint. Bought 5 gal pale of it so I have enough to do everything I want.

And painted..

Then we worked on the backsplash. Got it mocked up

It went up pretty easy once you made the cuts a few times. This is one of those items that many weren't sure about but most like it and I think it turned out even better than I thought. Simply looks great if you ask me. The color really compliments the cabinets and granite.

Hung the new ceiling light, and curtains. The curtains got put up with tension rods. Easy, adjustable and a clean install with the curtains on the inside of the window opening.

So this week I have been finishing up small details.

Was still battling the plumbing on the old disposal, just to find out that it don't matter. The damn thing was also leaking from itself and the bolts holding it together. This meant water was getting into the electronics and the motor. There was even rust on these long bolts which tells me it has been doing it for a while. We just never noticed in the old kitchen and didn't notice till now cause we never ran water in the sink long enough till I got the pvc water tight and not leaking.

Out with the fuckin old!!!

Stainless steel 2 grind chamber, 3/4hp, auto reverse for anti jamming, and ulta quiet tech. Let me tell ya... stainless... ok.... auto reverse for anti jamming... ok never jammed one... but the quiet tech... OMG you can't even hear the thing running over the sound of the water!!! It has a nice gasket at the flange with a better set of top rubber fingers, and a rubber pvc mounting system as you can see here... and I don't care... the quiet aspect is GREAT GREAT GREAT!!!

I installed the under cabinet trim which is great cause it hides the under cabinet lights more (as planned) and just adds that finished touch to the cabinets.

Then the crown molding yesterday that you can see here with the under cab lights...

The finished product....

With the under lights on

Room lights off

It has been a ruff ride due to some set backs with the sink, disposal, installation of the buffet/pantry area, and the dirty work of drywall. But its OH SO WORTH it! We simply LOVE IT!!!

Just have one more piece of scribe molding to put up at the cabinet to wall joints that I'm waiting to come in. Also will fill my trim nail holes and color those once that comes in as well.

Holy smokes... do NOT let Jamie see this kitchen... Daddy wants a new bike and if she sees this, we'll be redoing a kitchen, not getting a new bike.

Looks awesome man... great job!

Just saw this from age's ago. Thanks man. I figure if I can put forth my best efforts and the project can come out looking as good as it has been... hell anybody can do it.

Hear that Berto... you too! ;D

Thanks guys... its been allot lot lot of work. But rocks so much! And if there is any way to boost a home's equity, short of moving said home to another state, is to remodel anywhere you have running water. Hence another great return on my hard work. Fruther, remember I'm getting ready to start the bathrooms now as well.

I just want to put it into perspective... maybe just so I can see it so easily..

The old

The new

The completely added cause it wasn't there

The before and after really make this come together.

Great job.

I finally got my last molding in and installed it. The scribe molding for any cabinet to wall meet. Something to finish it off.

Then I also put some around the microwave to make it a slightly nicer install

Then I started into the hallway, bedroom, and 2 bathroom projects. These got delayed a bit this week but I'm starting back into these now.

First I started by removing all the BS from the rooms by putting them into the catch all room for these projects...

Pulled the old towel racks

Pulled the toilet cabinet and mirror

Some pics of the main bath's irritating wallpaper border...

In the master half bath

this vanity will go

This original toilet that flushes 45 gals each hit on the handle... gone

The main bath vanity for future reference

Will re-use the corian counter/sink... with new faucet though

Also enlarged this 2 switch box

And the wiring nightmares that I always find in this house

To this 3 gang box to include the dimmer for the rope light plug

This plug

Of coarse lots of mud work to repair the drywall...

Also due to the new vanity being smaller. I want to center it with the door. Meaning it needs to be off the right wall. This means moving the pvc drain. Cut and plug this

Then cover the hole and mud

Tomorrow I'm going to work on more mud, maybe some ceiling paint, lowe's trip, and getting started on the rope light/crown molding project in the main bath.

Looks fantastic man, but no wonder you never sleep! Well worth it though.

Well been workin on these bathrooms over the past few weeks... been going slow at it unlike how I did the kitchen...

Did lots more mud work... Did I ever tell ya how much I hate mud work?

Picked up some new nickle switch covers

Tore the old floor out of the half bath... found some old moisture damage... probably a leaky wax seal at one time... all dry now and wood was still solid...

After I cleaned it with bleach water and let it air out for a couple days I painted it with some killz primer to be sure to seal it up

Painted the cielings... ultra pure white eggshelf finish

Tore out the main bath floor.... OUCH is all I have to say...

Toilet in a tub LOL

Pulled out the main bath vanity & Found some old water damage here too... so same thing... cleaned with bleach water, air out, paint with killz. This one was also due to the builder jackasses didn't put in a heat duct/vent and just had the heat duct blowing under the vanity... stupid!

Had to build up the vanity spot due to the front lower facia on the new one...also notice a proper heat duct/vent

Also had to put some wood filler on the sides (60" vanity in a 64" hole) cause I didn't want to custom order a vanity at double the cost.

New adult height vanity in.

Oh... its tile and one complicated pattern

One of the worse pieces

Can't wait to grout it

The tile shop...

Because I discountinued the plumbing in the master bath... had to run new... even thru in a mechanical vent because I was tapping into the shower drain line and no longer right into the main drain with the roof vent. Just a pre-caution.

Got to love drop ceilings in the basement...

Then I tiled the master bath

Then primered the walls white

Installed the corian vanity top/sink.
Then, after I ripped the piece. Added it in to trim out the sides of the vanity (remember due to the 60" in a 64" hole).

Then back to tiling... did the bullnose on the floor

Started to work on the tub top surround tile. Had to come up with my own pattern...

Hung some new lights...

Main bath

Master bath

Worked on putting in the new shower faucet...

Here's the old

Used the new style copper fittings. Shark bite... no soidering, no flux... just cut and push together.

Put in the shower sprayer... this pic isn't so funny...

But it is when you realize what I'm standing on...

The new shower faucet and drain pull

Then buttoned up this update with the new faucet

I downloaded these pics yesterday... now today I did all the grout. I got pics and will download later....

Absolutely fantastic job, man. Now when can we all move in? ;D

02-25-2009, 12:52 PM
I had a guy come out today to look at busted pipes under kitchen sink and I need the pipe running from the tub that catches the water and crap to run through the basement pipe, what ever he told me the name was, he told me 250 if i get the parts and 300 if he does. That sounded like a lot of money for two pieces of stuff.

Paint prep

Painted and Lit

It really does light the room up pretty well. And it is also the final piece to complete this project. Now the only thing left to do is paint in the house... and let me tell you... it feels good to be done.
