This bike will be out and about in the summer...god willing! For those of you who don't know me, I build customs with alternative power plants... Most of them happen to be Briggs & Stratton engines. This bike will use a 35hp Briggs engine, a CVT type (snowmobile) transmission - yes, it's automatic and have a one off custom front end and rear suspension. The tank will be under the engine and the back bone will be very similar to a Rooke bike.

Just some test pipes to get it fired up...
Took all the covers off and powder coated them straight white.

chopsmitty

Did a polished cover for the shroud inlet, had to paint the plastic main engine cover to match the powder coat. Got the pipes painted so they didn't rust. This was all done later last summer in anticipation for this build

Bought a set of wheels and tires off Ebay. 21 x 3 and 17 x 11 with a 120 up front and a 330 in the rear. Avons. The wheels are by Black Bike Wheels. I had to delace them, powdercoat them, relace and true them.

Never again!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds cool. Where will this bike be scootin around this summer?

chopsmitty
12-23-2009, 06:55 AM
This is our bike. I'm building it for my Jennifer so she can ride with me, so it will be here on the streets of Grand Rapids. We probably won't be putting to many miles on it until the AMD World Championships at Sturgis.

I have also. Can you tell us more about the engine? Your bikes are so unique, I want one.

chopsmitty
12-23-2009, 05:39 PM
It's just a 35hp Briggs & Stratton w/ governor removed and all painted/powdercoated white. I plan on putting an old time stromberg carb on it. Stromberg 81 would be perfect.

I'm pretty sure it's about 900cc's or so and it is one heavy biotch!! - about 150 lbs.

Gas Man

Whats the top speed on something like that? how's it move around town? Got some off the line torque?

My orange bike uses a 20hp engine that is modified quite heavily. It probably makes 30hp or so????
http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/chopsmitty/CIMG0365.jpg

I have a buddy who has an older sporty, and this little briggs engine with the CVT will out accelerate him (its not a 1200), and run just over 100mph.

very cool!

how much will that bike weight?

chopsmitty
12-25-2009, 11:37 AM
it will definately be less than 400lbs., but I'm not making any specific weight saving goals.

junkyardjon
12-26-2009, 08:02 AM
erm or moly for the frame?

chopsmitty
12-26-2009, 12:03 PM
It will be a combination of ERW and DOM - but all mild steel. No tube will be larger than 1 1/4" and no plate thicker than 1/4".

Gas Man
01-03-2010, 07:57 AM
No the exhaust tubing

chopsmitty
01-04-2010, 09:38 PM
Exhaust tubing is 1 1/2". It was just built to do some testing on a stand. Finished product will be stainless and routed much differently.

I just got banned from Jockey Journal. I simply posted a question asking for input on what front brake would they use on my project. I included one pic.
Guess my stuff is so different, they can't even handle questions!! F 'em!

So, any of you guys have any ideas for a springer style front brake? I've been looking at the Fab. Kevin mini disc...

Work has slowed down, so back to the project!

Had to bite the bullet and buy a tubing roll former.

Rolled some tubing...

Chopsmitty, I remember reading an old post of yours on another forum about a springer front you were building. Did you ever complete that?

chopsmitty
02-27-2010, 12:43 AM
No, still plugging away at it. The pictures are in this build log. This is as far as I have gone. The CNC lathe has been busy for months and finding machine time has been next to impossible. I only need the bottom fork pivots and I'll be moving along on the progress again. Should be soon.

GR Bike show tomorrow and Detroit Autorama on Sunday - no time to work on the bike!

Got all the engine mount holes transfered, reinforcements welded in the underside and all the jackshaft mounts tacked on.

Got the basic chassis all welded up...mostly.
http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo11/chopsmitty/CIMG2601.jpg

And mocked it up on the table at ride height. Now to finish the backbone.

That triangulated area is the fuel tank. No 'tank' on the backbone.

That's some cool poo poo right there! LOL Checked the website out too. Real interesting stuff. The shop I work at was involved in building a lot of race cars for about 6-7 years. We mashed an entire Cobra R drivetrain into a Ford Focus and made it look stock. Lots of Corvettes too.

I love the idea behind these bikes you're building. Ever think of putting together a roller kit?

I'll be following your progress and thanks for sharing.

chopsmitty

No, the frame is all used up in other projects...

On a sad note, looks like Jen's bike is not going to be finished for Sturgis - it's being held up at the powdercoaters. We will, however, be taking the Shadow chop and entering it in the freestyle class at the AMD World Championships.

Sure wish I could figure out how to post pics on this site....

Yeah, thanks everybody. I'm pretty well settled in - just don't have my stuff yet. The container is somewhere between Michigan and Hawaii... that's all they can tell us!?!
So I continue to sleep on an air mattress and ....work.
Here's the place I'm renting for the next year:

My office: (I also have a nice shop with a CNC and a bunch of manual equipment)

Looking just out my office door into the courtyard - all the hallways are really open air... no doors!
